Very satisified with this printer

This has been an excellent purchase for me. I bought this on the recommendation of a rep at an office supply store, and am glad that I followed his advice. It was easy to set up, and is easy to use. I haven't used the fax function yet, but am satisfied with the printing capabilities (although to be sure, it's not a laser printer), especially being able to print color 11 x 17. The scanner has also yielded surprisingly good scans. I would highly recommend this printer for a small office. The price is very reasonable for its capabilities.

Disappointing

The 11x17 flat bed plate was the reason for purchasing this machine and expectd quality and speed. I am really disappointed with the very very slow (45 seconds between sheets) copying, slow printing, and slow scanning process along with the poor printing quality no matter what settings I use. Single sheet feed for copying is another problem. No multisheet copy capabilities. This machine is not recommended for small businesses or for anyone using the machine for graphics and CADD drawings or renderings.

Disappointed

For all the research I did prior to purchasing my MFC-J6710DW I was very disappointed with the product. Once the lengthy set-up was finished all the machine would do is constantly cycle through cleaning until the ink ran out - and that's A LOT of cycles. I returned product hoping it was just that machine. On machine #2 I was initially hopeful, wireless worked ok and everything printed fine. Then after a couple weeks constant cleaning cycles returned. Uninstalled, reinstalled, USB, wireless, nothing worked. Then, even the occasional test print page stopped printing black, even though the cartridge had lots of ink. Next my Windows 7 "View Devices and Printers" started showing multiple printer icons! Ugh... The on-line support was valiant in their efforts to assist me but machine #2 goes back tonight. Sorry, Brother, time to try somethnig else.

Excellent Machine!

I have had this machine for about 2 years and have finally gotten around to write a review. I love this machine! The 11x17 printing and scanning is invaluable to me. I am a musician, run a big band and a summer community band, and do some arranging for local high schools and a college. The printer works well with all programs, including SIBELIUS, a music notation program. I can create all types of documents. The wireless feature is wonderful! Yes, I had initial difficulties setting up the scanning feature wirelessly, but that was on me, not the software or the machine. It is networked so my real estate agent wife can print to it and scan from it to her computer.

Expensive Boat Anchor

I came in to this church as the pastor just a few months ago. Several months prior to my arrival on the field, the church had purchased this machine to use for all of their copying and printing needs (very small congregation).
What I found was quite possibly the biggest headache I have ever had with printing and copying in my life (and that says a lot, as I was a school teacher for 14 years and dealt with a lot of horribly abused and maintained equipment). I will just list off the biggest of my headaches - then you the reader can decide if this is the printer for you (no particular order):
1. paper misfeeds/jams frequently. Often when there is actually no jam at all. Printer has been cleaned and checked - it just does this.
2. the manual feed tray (in the back) doesn't recognize media is in the tray at all a lot of the time - or recognizes it but just won't feed it - requiring several steps to try to get it to feed.
3. Prints using the manual feed tray often are not straight on the paper - probably related to the fact that the printer feed system is poorly designed/built.
4. Printer is EXTREMELY paper sensitive - the regular paper trays can be filled and some brands (even good quality) just plain will NOT feed reliably. Period. Jams, or even more frustrating - multiple sheets fed at one time - spreading your printing over multiple, partially overlapping sheets... I've probably already wasted a good ream of payer with just this issue.
5. VERY poor color rendering. I have never in my life - even going back to the EARLY days of inkjet printers - seen color printing as HORRIBLE as this machine - regardless of the claimed DPI - when the colors are SO far out from expected - it is an indication of a very poor printer.
6. Print head clogging - while the ink for this printer may be relatively inexpensive - it isn't when you have to clean the heads so often. NO rhyme or reason - it just will start skipping lines - requiring from one to 5 head cleanings - all with Genuine OEM/Brother ink. Yet more wasted paper.
7. Sometimes doesn't recognize that cartridge is installed - have to pull it out, put back in and push on the lever to get it to stay locked in.
So - are their any positives? The claimed features and functions list is extensive - and it prints on 11X17 paper.
But it is just about worthless in my book. So much so that as soon as we can afford to - this machine is going in the trash. First impressions are important - this is my first impression with a Brother machine - and I hope it is my last.

Great Scanner
on September 8, 2011

The 11 x 17 scanner is great, is fairly quick and works well with the software.
As a printer the unit has some quirks with paper handling that need improvement. The single sheet feeder in back does not always feed paper on the first or second try. And you can feed only one sheet!
The machine gets confused on feeding paper out of the two trays. If the top one is low or empty, you get an error message that you have to clear by hitting start.
Finally, the unit sometimes thinks paper is stuck in it, even if there is none. You have to unplug it and then plug it in to clear the error.
If the paper handling quirks were resolved this would be a perfect maching.

A Good Printer

This is the second 11x17 printer I have purchased from Brother. The first one, Model 6490CW was not very good - I believe it was Brother's first attempt at 11x17. This Model J6710DW is a huge improvement, greatly improved quality of prints and copies.

Amazing value Multi-Function machine

This is an outstanding addition to my office. I have had a competitor's 11x17 printer but never had the ledger size scanning ability. While there are a few items that could be improved, everything that is there works well. The installation and wireless setup went smoothly and everything functions as advertised. A bit of a hassle to register software when I began to use it, but I'm pleased with the features and am amazed that a machine with all these specs sells for such a reasonable price! Now, to the negatives: Envelope feeding - one at a time is not a good thing! Also, the output stacking mechanism is flimsy and inconvenient. Other than that, I'm very pleased and give this unit a 5-star rating.
