This is the worse canon I ever brought. The picture quality is BAD. This camera produce excellent video but the battery is VERY hot after few minutes. I brought this camera is to replace my old PowerShot SD750 for my wife.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Poor image quality, Heavy/Bulky
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

NO PRINTED USER MANUAL
on August 3, 2011

I agree with most of the other reviews here; however, the lack of a printed manual (PDF Only) makes it very cumbersome to learn the many features of this camera. I cannot recommend it for that reason. I am very disappointed because this is my 6th or so digital camera and I generally liked Canon products but must now find another brand that provides a simple means to learn how to use their product.
Pros: Nice features/settings
Cons: Difficult to use, no printed manual
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Good camera, but disappointed with video options
on April 2, 2012

I bought this camera because I wanted a high quality camera to take crystal clear pictures and record video. I am very satisfied in that. However, I am disappointed to find that my only option for videos is Apple Quicktime .mov files. I do not use Apple products and have not been able to watch my videos on my computer. Had I known this, I would not have bought this camera.
Pros: very clear pictures and videos
Cons: cannot change video output, thick and a bit heavy

I have NEVER owned any other type of Camera, other than a CANON. And each time I upgrade to a newer model, it just seems to be better than the last one I had. I am very pleased with my NEW SX230 HD. they don't get any better than CANON products for overall QUALITY.

Poor Focus
on March 3, 2012

Over 60% of my pictures are out of focus. The green frame indicating focus is complete is always present, but the final picture is focused on the background, not the face.

Shutter broke
on August 9, 2011

from Chicago IL
The shutter on this camera stopped opening and closing fully after 3 weeks. I simply returned the camera and don't plan on buying this one again.. Battery life isn't great either. I found that the pictures came out darker than what is seen on the lcd screen. This camera can take really nice photos, though the 14x zoom is not really necessary.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, excellent image quality, Bright LCD
Cons: Short battery life, Complicated controls/menu, shutter is prone to breaking
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Do not buy this product

Canon has applied unique file extension (.ctg) to photos. Photos with that extension cannot be opened or saved without Canon-specific software which is (so far) available only on disk. But modern travel computers do not have disk drives. So this camera is just about worthless for travelers. I have emailed Canon product support for help. Time will tell. And this expensive camera lacks an (inexpensive) view finder. Without a view finder, forget taking pictures in sunshine. Overall: money wasted.
Pros: compact
Cons: no view finder, pictures can't be saved, cheap iris cover for lens
