The Perfect Camera
on April 1, 2012

All the power and versatility you will need to capture your vacation or family event is a small compact camera. The Power Shot SX230 takes great pictures. The pictures are sharp and clear. The camera is easy to use. It works especially great with indoor light. Where most zoom cameras need a flash the SX230's low light sensor doesn't need to use one. Great movies capability and a great 12 times zoom.
The complaints about the flash poping up are easily overcome. If you don't need it or don't want it, you can just flip it shut. This camera is pure fun.

Refurbish experiment

Battery with this refurbished camera has been disappointing. It has been totally discharged three times in under three hundred pictures over ten days.
Pros: Superior build quality, Super-sharp images, compact

sx230 disappointment
on January 24, 2012

I purchased this camera six months ago as an upgrade to my Canon A95 which takes fabulous pictures. I was hoping the SX230 would be bigger/better. The image quality in Auto mode is extremely poor. Images are washed out/not clear/out of focus. Any light coming in window will wash out photo. Facial features have no detail. The SX230 was sent back for repair and returned in the same condition. I took the same picture with both the A95 and the SX230. The detail/image quality on the A95 was clear, crisp. The SX230 was blurry, out of focus, no facial detail. I've tried adjusting the settings with poor results. I'm hoping Canon will resolve this problem as I've loved my A95 and would like to continue being a Canon fan.On the plus side, the HD video is fabulous. Extremely clear, excellent photo quality.
Pros: hd video, size, lcd screen
Cons: image quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Too Much Noise

Was so excited to get this camera for Christmas; but after playing around with it for several hours comparing it with my 6-year-old digital camera, I sadly had to return this gift. The old camera took better quality pictures every single time.
What a disappointment! The photos taken with this camera are incredibly grainy under normal shooting conditions. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Cons: grainy photos

directions missing

I am quite amazed that no one mentioned in the reviews that there is not the typical full direct manual on using the camera. There is a CD of directions, but I can't access that when I am using my camera. I am very disappointed in this change of Canon's lack of user friendly product needs.
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Difficult to use, Short battery life, Complicated controls/menu, directions of use
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great Camera...However...

After a year of use, I love this camera! It's slimmer and portable than my Canon Powershot SX10 which means I can put it in my pocket and whip it out easily.
The images are sharp, low light feature is great and the 14x zoom is amazing! Also, the fact that the SX230 comes in a variety of colors makes it more personal.
On the other hand, it take a while for the flash to boot up. And dust particles inside the lenses can be an ongoing problem.
And...a few months ago (before my 1-year warranty ran out), the lens covers malfunctioned and unfortunately, I dropped my camera before I could send it in to be fixed. And so I paid a whopping amount of money to fix it. Not cool at all. Since then I have been using my bulky camera case to store the camera in between takes (vs my lint-filled pocket).
And It's been 4 months since I got it fixed (by Canon) and the lens covers have started to 'act up again'. I'm not sure if anyone else is having this problem, but it's something to consider...
Otherwise, a great camera!
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Our review of the SX230HS
on December 15, 2011

I have been using the SX230HS on and off for over 6 months. It was purchased as a replacement for an older Canon Power Shot 640. Big mistake. Unfortunately I cannot give this Canon much more than 2.5 stars out of 5. Several issues have cropped up with the camera I have. First, it is not stable in auto-focusing. Taking quick shots like capturing children in normal activities, focusing is not consistent. At best, sharpness even on a tripod leaves much to be desired. Another issue for a camera of this cost is contrast consistency to name another. The camera is NOT user friendly especially for point and shoot folks thinking a spendy price will give them the sharpest of photos. Controls for camera use are not convenient and difficult to find and use in low light conditions. The flash is poorly located. Canon, you need to rethink your latest entry in the Power Shot category.
Pros: none i can think of.
Cons: flash positioning, ease of use., location of controls
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
