great features and superb photos

I love my new SX230. My daughter lost my SD3500, which was a camera that I loved. So, I had to get something new and the SX230 was a delightful find. The photos are clear and color precise. I especially love the low light settings. Geez, the burst setting is perfect for catching the action of sports or a dance recital. This camera is feature heavy. Lots of settings for everyone. I like using the manual stteings but the auto settings work really well too. No problem getting around the scene menus. Everytime I use it I am amazed. The pop up flash is also very cool. It pops up high enough to eliminate a lot of red eye photos. When I want to turn the flash off fast I close it down and I'm ready to go.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, easy to use, cool pop up flash

Slow camera
on October 8, 2011

I used this camera exclusively on a recent trip because my S-90 was stolen. This camera produces good images, usually, but is slow to zoom and very slow to auto focus, so you miss many quick shots, especially any kind of action shot. Pros are this is good in low light and for scenes when you have plenty of time. Color saturation is good and camera adjustments are great. Zoom length is wonderful for a small camera. Problems: ssssslow zoom, slow autofocus, the adjustment ring has no notches and moves too easily often causing misadjustment to the camera settings because the camera is small and no room for your hands. Very poor battery life, especially if shooting video.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, great zoom length
Cons: Short battery life, slow autofocus, sssssslow zoom, adjustment ring so easiy to move on a small camera

Great Little Camera

I've owned two Canon Digital Elph pocket cameras over the years and was delighted with both of them. I decided that I wanted something with a longer zoom capability and higher resolution but didn't want to spend big bucks for a DSLR. I'm thoroughly sold on Canon cameras so I decided to get the SX230HS.
I've taken some great pictures with it and couldn't be more pleased. One night I got a shot of the full moon on the horizon at 12X, using just the Auto setting, Delay setting and a tripod. Of course I also turned off the flash. The detail of the moon's surface was amazing.
Last week a tornado touched down about a mile from here. I again used the 12X zoom and got a fantastic shot of the funnel and the boiling clouds that surrounded it.
I'll probably never use half the features available on this camera, but even as a simple point-and-shoot unit, it delivers great results.

GPS
on April 23, 2011

This camera works great and the GPS is a perfect fit for Geocaching. I just wish there was an easy way to record the latitude and longitude and UTC time and date stamp on the photo for printing. I have been able to do it my using the photo editor's add text information, but it seems like it should be function the camera could easily to set up to do.
The camera takes beautiful pictures and the GPS has been within 3 meter accuracy. I love it.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings, Short battery life, lat and long on image

Excellent Camera

This is an excellent camera for travel and casual use. Lens has good wide to tele range, and image quality is superior. Quality of shots only slightly below my 60D with 18 to 200 lens.
I am an old guy, so the lack of an optical viewfinder in the sun stops my outside pictures, but super inside and low light pics. I am hoping that the next G series Canon incorporates the features of this camera and maintains the optical viewfinder.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Difficult to use, Short battery life

Good but not so good
on January 8, 2012

I bought this camera right before the holidays so that we could have nice high res. pics of our family and events. The camera's performance and functions were awesome. I returned this because when in the default zoom position 1x the flash cast a shadow across the corner of the lens. This made every picture have a little black shadow in the corner. At first I thought it was just maybe a problem with the one I bought but after extensive testing it really was a design error. I don't know how cannon didn't test to make sure it wouldn't cast shadows but they definitely did not live up to there reputation with this camera.

Good purchase but

The camera is easy to use and has an excellent zoom. There are three problems. First, the flash pops up every time the camera is turned on. This makes it inconvenient to use. A much bigger problem is that when outside in bright light it is extremely difficult to see the image you want to take when looking at the LCD screen. This problem could have been corrected very simply by maintaining the viewfinder. I purchased the camera to take on an Alaskan trip. Most of the time I had to guess at the images I was trying to take. As a result I missed pictures of whales I was trying to take; and people who tried to take pictures of me couldn't. It is difficult to take a picture if you cannot see the image. I used a tip of trying to "tip" the camera but still had great difficulty seeing images. I asked a camera pro on the ship to help. He had the same difficulty using it. A third problem is that the battery life is also relatively short. It is good for indoor picture taking. In all, it would be an outstanding camera and at the top of my recommendation list if the first two problems could be receified.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
