Stunning Camera
on May 30, 2011

Canon has really upped the ante with the SX230HS. The camera takes amazing pictures as well as crisp, clear 1080P video. The zoom is great for a point and shoot camera and there is a plethora of features and modes including the unique tilt-shift "miniature" and toy camera modes.
.
The options are pretty straightforward and the menus are easy to navigate. The unit has a nice LCD screen and has a nice overall feel. The GPS is mounted on top of the camera so the flash is located to the left top of the camera where you would normally place your left-hand index finger so it's real easy to obstruct the flash from popping up when you turn the camera on.
.
There are a few things missing in a point and shoot at this price point though. First, there is no HDR mode which is offered in other lower priced cameras from other companies. Second, there is no 60fps 720p video mode which is a bit disappointing. I think a premium-priced camera like this deserves a few more premium features.
.
The slow-motion mode is fun but with resolutions of 120fps @ 640x480 and 240fps @ 320x240 really limits it's usefulness. I hope in the future we see some 720p 240fps modes from Canon in their point and click line.
.
All in all, this is an excellent camera albeit at a premium price. The battery life could be better but luckily these batteries are dirt cheap on the internet so there is no reason not to have an extra 5 or 6 available. This camera has effectively replaced my need for an HD camcorder which is what I was shopping for when I found this model. I am very happy with it both as a picture camera as well as a video camera. Well done Canon!
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, excellent image quality, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings, Short battery life

A lot of features and a lot of convenience

I've seen this camera get some negative reviews for short battery life. In my opinion, even with the GPS feature on (which drains the battery faster), the battery life is a small sacrifice in light of all of the features you get in such a small package. The battery charges quickly, and with a backup battery accessible - it makes this camera a no brainer for somebody who wants SLR quality and functions in a pocket sized camera.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

This camera is for short trips, I'm very happy with the sharp photos I've got from this camera, My biggest complaint is no viewfinder, sometimes it's hard to see the lcd screen in the bright sun.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life

This is a great camera for the casual and more serious photographer. This is my second SX camera. Its a great compliment to my first. I like the GPS features. Now I can see and search for photos based on their location. The focal length range is perfect for me. Thanks Canon.
Pros: focal range, size, full hd video, gps
Cons: fragile lens

Nice upgrade

Owed the previous model SX210 is a good unit too,but this 230 is even better. Canon redid the controls especially on top to make it even easier and comfortable to use-took the tiny recessed on/off switch moved to rear (bigger button) did away with the little nub zoom and made it traditional style toggle lever with the shutter release-way to go Canon..
Kept the same good lens and zoom but took it from from the little to high 14.1 megapixels to a cleaner less noisy 12.1 sensor a entirely new new one also, improves movies
and photos are quite good in fact even when you use the digital zoom up to 56X photos are impressive and usable.
My friends are impressed with this little unit a couple say they may buy it. So no regrets on my purchase (try it you will like it)
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life

Cons: battery life, flash location

HD video & GPS pocket camera
on June 15, 2011

First off, unlike other reviewers I've had excellent battery life. But if you leave the GPS logger on, you won't. So read the manual.
This camera replaces my SX110 IS for hiking, because It fits in my pocket like my older SD550 Elph, but it has 28mm wide angle, 14x zoom, full HD video with zoom during recording, a separate video record button so I can snap a photo with one button and then video record notes about the photo with the other.
And it has GPS for geotagging of photos taken on my hikes.
I thought about buying a digital SLR camera, but I realized that I am much more likely to carry a pocket camera and this one is the best (compared to 4 previous Canon models) that I have owned.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Lens Cover Sticks
on June 15, 2011

After reading reviews and searching camera stores, I finally selected the Canon SX 230 HS as the camera to take on active vacations. The XS 230 HS takes great pictures and offers many of the cool features you would expect. However, the lens cover is a flexible 4-piece retracting cover which seems stick. It's annoying, you look at your pictures and there is a dark area in the upper left-hand corner. You have to remember to take your finger and push the last piece of the lens cover or it does not fully retract. How come I never saw that mentioned in the internet reviews? Not a good design. Common sense tells you that two thicker pieces would be more reliable than four flimsy ones.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Flimsy Construction, lens cover does not retract fully.
