The only printers I have ever owned are Epson, the one I had before is still working in a very good shape (used for 7 years), the only reason to purchase the new Workforce 840 is I needed a scanner, the setup wasn't bad, just pay attention when you connect wirelessly, install the software through a USB and then run the same setup without, I couldn't find that anywhere in the setup documents other than that I don't think I would ever regret purchasing this printer.

This printer is awsome. So far didn't have any problems with it. It's easy and simple to setup and run. I had it set up to my wireless internet within like 1-1/2 hrs. Was printing in no time, probably printed over 60 to 70 pages already. I love the automatic 2 sided printing.Thank you for such a great product.

Epson Workforce 840

I've had this printer only a few days now but the more I work with it the more I like it. I've been trying every type of printer test I can think of and it has passed all with flying colors.
Setup was easy and took about forty minutes. There were no glitches with the software installation on 32 bit Windows 7. I used direct usb connection so I can't comment on the wireless setup.
Printing from the PC is fast and simple. Printing photos from a memory card was a simple process and the large display makes it easy to see the subtle differences between photos. Photo print quality was quite good. I'm not a professional photographer but the quality of 4 x 6 or 5 x 7 photos certainly seem to me to equal those from the store.
The Workforce 840 itself seems to be well built. The paper trays work well and the paper size adjustments are solid and precise. The 840 has a smaller footprint than my old printer and all of the paper trays are on the front. I like the control panel which is large and the menus are intuitive and easy to use.
The scanner is fast, quiet and simple to use, either from the PC or by the control panel. If using the PC you can configure all of the settings prior to scanning. Scanning from the control panel allows three options for saving – jpeg, pdf or email but the settings are automatic. Still, I stuck in a magazine page, hit the "Scan to pdf" button and in less than 30 seconds the page was perfectly reproduced on my monitor.
The fax portion of the Workforce 840 is the simplest fax that I have used yet. You need only enter your name and fax number for the header information and set the number of rings before pick up and setup is complete. The 840 simply monitors your main phone line for the signal from another fax machine and goes into receive mode when it gets the tones. The 840 will receive the fax whether you answer the phone or the answering machine picks up or not. This eliminates the need for a second phone line. Now I can cancel my smart ring number and save a bit of money each month.
Overall the Workforce 840 is very easy to use and may be the ideal 4 in 1 for the home or small office. Now I just have to wait and see if it is as economical on ink as Epson advertises.

Great printer

So far so good, well great actually. We have a writer in the family and really needed a printer that could knock out pages quickly and this does. Our only issue was the set up. The software that came with it kept assuming we had a Mac and so it wouldn't set up on our PC. Of course it was Sunday and the service center was closed, but they did have all the software downloadable on the Epson web site, so we were able to get everything set up. We also had to use the USB cable to hook up our 2nd computer, it wouldn't work even after it was linked to the wireless network. But it's a laptop and it was only for the initial set up so it wasn't a big deal. After a couple of hours of something that should take about a half hour (which is actually about normal for me) we are printing wirelessly, and things are working out very well.

First impressions

I chose the Epson Workforce 840 over the HP OfficeJet 8500A Premium (nearest competitor) for several reasons: Higher print resolution (not necessarily quality) Duplex scan ability (couldn't confirm whether HP had this) Lower cost (got it on sale) Slightly smaller size
I would have preferred the HP OfficeJet 8500A for: Faster printing Lower ink cost Possibly superior input paper handling
I wanted a printer that could print #6 3/4 envelopes, but never found one. This one prints only #10, as do most.
Overall, functionality appears good. Pros: The printer is supplied with full extra high density ink cartridges, not starter cartridges as with many others. A phone cable is included for use with the Fax feature. Software includes ABBEY Fine Reader for OCR. (But it doesn't say that it's the 9.0 Sprint version, which you need to know if you read the EULA carefully.) A label on the printer indicates that it can be outfitted with two 500-sheet paper trays instead of the 250-sheet trays supplied. (I have not verified whether this is so.) It includes a fairly decent printed setup guide in both supported languages (English and French [US model]).
Cons: Plastic parts are cheaply made and will break easily. Initial setup is best done with an A-B USB cable, which is not included. A network cable is also not included. Though the printer can do both wired and wireless networking, it can only do one or the other, not both at the same time. The network MAC address is not stated on a label anywhere. I had to find it in my router before I could configure a DHCP address reservation for it. The printer cannot switch between its paper trays. Printing stops if the tray goes empty. (Bad design.) As with many AIO printers, the Fax feature will not work in a home or office wired with multiple phones at different outlets on the same line. The one and only phone or answering machine must be connected to the printer's pass-through (EXT) port to not be in contention with the Fax. Else the printer's fax connection must be left unplugged except when in actual use, and set to auto-answer on fewer rings than an answering machine. Best would be to have a separate phone number for fax only.

Ive had the epson workforce 840 for about a week. I enjoy all that this machine offers except for the setup. If you have windows 7 (32 or 64 bit) go to epsons site and download the printers drivers. Dont waste your time trying to use the disk, go straight to the site and download from there.

So far the WorkForce 840 is all I could ever want from a AIO printer. It is fast and quiet! I wish some of the maintenance features(i.e., ink level checks and such), were easier to access. That is about it. Overall, I would give the 840 an A-.

Excellent Small Business Printer

Went to the store to get the Artisan series printer. Once there, i explained my needs were geared towards buisiness documents printing and not pictures printing. I also needed scan and copy capabilities, and wifi is a must. Welcome to the Epson Workforce 840. Set up was one of the easiest set ups i have experienced. No glitches, it just works!! Set up did take about 10 mins per system but it was flawless. Printing quality is excellent as well. I was expecting "soft" text in the prints but my black and white prints are of excellent quality, comparable for legal quality prints at a fraction of the price. Printing speed is excellent as well. I also tried the scanner function and i am impressed. Very flexible settings and the printer scanned documents quickly and clearly. You get two paper trays, double sided printing, multi-loading capabilities, etc... As i said earlier, i am glad i was steered in the direction of the Workforce 840 - you will love this printer!!!
