I must state up front that this review does NOT include reviewing the FAX capabilities of this printer as I have not, nor am I likely to use them.
Bought to replace an older Stylus Photo printer that had served well for many years but finally died.
Things I really like about the Workforce 840, is it's a fairly fast printer, and the fact that it's wireless. It was easy to set up, and being wireless it can reside anywhere within range of the wireless router clearing up valuable space around my computer desk. The instructions are quite clear with the exception of any explanations for the print dialogs. It took me quite a while to figure out why I could not select Cassette 2 to print a page from Word, so I could leave glossy photo paper in Cassette 1. Turns out I had to change it to letter size in order to do that. In cassette 1 you can also print "borderless" letter which is a plus for some things, but the documentation doesn't mention that little difference.
A few things I think could be better. The scans turn out a little grainy, and my older Epson Perfection scanner does a much better job at capturing scans accurately. So unless I need an "in a hurry" color copy of something, I'm more likely to use the TWO machine approach. The other thing I would like to see would be six cartridges instead of four. The color picture prints are decent but not great. They're fine for sharing snapshots or printing a color graphic brochure ad, but for photo art, it really needs those other two colors. Many operations can be done at the printer itself without going near a computer, like copy, Fax, printing pictures from a camera memory card or USB thumb drive (readers for these are built in and conveniently located on the front of the printer). The included software also has OCR software that I have not used so it's not included in my review. Having two paper cassettes, is a time saver although many of the specialty operations will only operate from cassette 1 so you will have to do some paper changes but not as often as you'd have to do with only one input tray. The automatic document feeder works well also.
And the last big plus is that being installed on the wireless router, everyone in the family can share the printer. The computer does not have to be wireless as long as it's on the local network. You DO have to install the printer software on each computer though, and there are some minor differences in what gets installed if your computers are not all running the same levels of their operating system.
All in all it's a fairly decent all-in-one available at a decent price. Improvements I'd like to see are the ability to over-ride the cassette choice and print from either cassette (MY choice) no matter what kind of paper is in it. The ability of the printer to KNOW what kind of paper could be in each cassette by the position of the paper guides (at present it assumes the correct paper is there), six cartridges for better photo prints, and some improvements in photo scanning.
I would recommend this to a friend!

The 840 Has It ALL!

Use to own an Epson for years and was very happy with it. When it died, we switched to another brand. What a nightmare that experience was. We were in the market for new printer for our business and had a number of items on our wish list. It needed to be fast, have networking installed (wired or wireless), memory cards, scanning, copying, and fax. We also needed a printer that could handle legal size paper as most of our forms are printed on this size paper. While looking, we almost went with the Epson 635 until we saw the 840 had TWO TRAYS. One for regular paper to print and one for our legal size paper. It was a certified lock after seeing this feature. (Which we really wanted but thought this would only be available in a commercial grade printer costing hundreds more.) This machine has all the features of a commercial grade unit with a very small footprint, and affordable price. It has just about every bell and whistle you could ever want. (Including a handy little iPhone app for direct printing from your hand held.) We’ve been putting the 840 through it’s paces and it exceeded all our expectations for ease of use, print speed, and features. Love the Energy Star rating, and the fact that we use half the paper with two sided printing. (Environmental impact is also a huge plus!) Highly recommend this for any busy home based business or even small to mid size office use. Thrilled to be back with Epson and the very extensive list of features to run our business with.
I use this printer for our small business in the home office, along with some personal printing of school stuff for my daughter, and some pictures.
It does everything I need and more! I can copy, scan, print, including double sided scanning and printing, envelopes, photos, and probably a few things I haven't thought of yet! It also works with my wireless network, and there's an app to print directly from my smartphone. The ink cartridges that it came with still have plenty of ink after about 5 months of moderate to heavy printing in both color and b&w, and the ink doesn't smear when I highlight my printouts! It has two paper trays with multiple paper sizes, including legal size paper, and an auto document feeder that I've used to send a 54 page fax! And it closes up nicely to prevent dust from collecting in the ADF. I haven't imported pictures directly to the USB port yet, but apparently it has that capacity.
Customer Service was quick, responsive and effectively helped me the one time I needed to call for a scanning question I couldn't figure out on my own.
The one problem I have is I get a line when I use my ADF to scan, fax or copy (it isn't there when I use the flat scanner). I haven't called to see if there is a specific thing I can do for this yet, and cleaning it as suggested in the User's Guide didn't seem to help.
All in all, I am EXTREMELY happy with this all-in-one (that I got on SALE!!!), and I would recommend this for even home use, as it is also very affordable, even at the MSRP.

I like the the trays vs the older paper feed system. I.m hopefull that I will get more print from the ink cartrages. This has been my big concern. If I don't and if the price doesn't come down. I will repalce it with one that is less expensive to operate. I hope Epson is monitoring this information. I have been a loyal EPSON customer for the last 20 years. My only complaint is the ink cartrages are to $EXPENSIVE$ and it doesn't go very far. I will be monitering usage & cost for ink closely.

Hard to set up

Seems like a nice printer and a big improvement over my other one (also an Epson). It works with a cable but I cannot set up the wireless function on my main desktop, although I was able to connect my son't computer to the network. I have tried and tried repeatedly using different settings, updating drivers, etc. I will call tech support on Monday and see if they can help figure this out. If you don't mind the risk of having trouble setting up the wireless function, and want a truly wireless device, I'd recommend you consider another printer.

Looks like I bought a LEMON. No easy installation with this product. Still don't have a printer. I would not recommend buying this LEMON.
