Super Results with new Epson 750-M
on January 20, 2011

I was hoping my results would be a noticeable improvement when moving from the Epson Perfection 500 series to a new 750-M. I was generally happy with the 500 but was looking for improved film scanning, both 35mm and medium format.
Well I ran my first film scans last night, using Silverfast Ai and the 750-M. I am thrilled to tell you that the improvement was incredible. I have used Nikon film scanners in the past and they did well, but this new 750-M blew me away. The results were exceptionally sharp, saturated and high quality. And I was scanning at 2400 dpi.
Way to go Epson. I am very happy with my new scanner.

Great for photographs

Bought this scanner for old family photos and negatives. Works better than expected on negatives (both black and white and color). Many are 40 years old or more. Also great for old photographs. Better than any other scanner I have used.

Epson V750 Pro

The V750 is a high quality scanner. I have used it for about 6 months with no troubles. The software which came with it also works well. I especially like that it works well for both opaque pages and transparent media such as slides and negatives. For the latter it is very nice to be able to scan 120 or even 4x5 film, not just "35mm" format.

Fantastic machine

I have to admit that I am not a photographic guru or can make fantastic magic happen with Photoshop or like programs. But my family has a large collection of 35mm slides that were basically going the way of the 8-track cassettes. With the Perfection V750, I can easily scan all over our slides into a digital format to safeguard for the future.
I'm not overly given to the Digital Ice and dust removal parts by Epson, they tend to make the photos grainy and wash out all the natural coloring.
However, by using the 750 and Photoshop (Lightroom), I can produce some fantastic digitals.
Also the tines that hold the slides onto the tray are a little weak and even with great care; tend to break off and you need to replace the entire tray.

Good Value

Setting up and installing the scanner and the software was relatively straightforward. The Epson scan software does a good job on film and standard 35mm slides. For half frame and 110 slides, I used the included SilverFast software which I found to be powerful, but quioxitic. SilverFast tutorials were sometimes helpful, but they were not updated to show screen shots of the current version. For both Epson Scan and SilverFast AI I got mixed results with Digital ICE. In some cases it made things better, but for the most part I found a disturbing increase in artifacts and distorted edge effects when I used Digital ICE to try to clear up fungus and dust on 50 year old slides.
Other reviews about the apparent fragility of the slide holder fingers rang true. I initially stored the holders on edge all together and later found one of the fingers almost broken off. I now store all the holders in individual hanging folders and have had no further damage. Found a parts seller on the Internet that sells holders for a reasonable price, so I bought extras. Having an extra set of holders allows you to load one while you are scanning another. It doesn't halve your scanning time, but it does make things more efficient.
In summary, I like the scanner. It seems to be reasonably fast; gives good quality scans when you get the hang of it; and has held up very well. I've scanned 4800 frames so far.
If you buy the additional warranty, open the envelope when you receive it. Turns out there is a 30 day window to register the warranty with the company.

With over 200 scans done and over 10,000 scans to go so far all I can say is it meets and exceeds our expectations. The software works very well and the results are great.

I opened the box, set it up, installed the Epson software, scanned a couple of color negatives and with no color correction it was pretty darn good.

5 Stars with SilverFast

Using the V750 for almost a year now, I have to state my complete satisfaction with this device. It's a well-priced happy medium between cheap all-round flatbed scanner and expensive dedicated film scanner. The only drawback is the Epson Scan software to run it, which is very basic and does not allow to use the scanner's capabilities completely. Fortunately, SilverFast was included in delivery.
I've updated to SilverFast Archive Suite straight away, because I'd made very positive experience with SilverFast before. With this version you can use SilverFast's own dust and scratch removal iSRD, which is superior to ICE in speed and quality. You can manually adjust any parameters and having a little experience you should be able to remove any defects without increasing artifacts or losing detail.
This is just one example, I mention because previous writer Crowshooter seems to have problems with. There are many other features you won't find an equivalent in Epson Scan, Multi-Exposure for instance.
