All in all for the price it is an exceptional blu-ray device, But hey its a Sony so you wont be let down.
What's great about it: Has Vudu Netflix, Hudu and qriocity entertainment services, plus a slew of other cool extra net based entertainment
What's not so great: My MP3 player will not work on it
I would recommend this to a friend!

I bought this player to stream netflix in additional to play blueray discs. For netflix it seems to be dumbed down, i.e. only shows what is in your instant queue and does not let you "surf" netflix offerings from the player, making it inconvenient to load what you want to see on NF first from your PC. Other players NF do not have this limitation and I would not have bought it if I had known this.
What's great about it: Price
What's not so great: Content - Netflix

WIFI only with sony adapter

I was really excited to finally get a blu ray player. I spent a lot of time reading the reviews of the different sony players. I didn't see a need to get the 3D BDP-S580 because I don't have a 3D television. It's actually more cost effective because you don't have to pay another $80 for a wireless adapter from sony UWA-BR100 and it is faster etc. I tried my other wireless adapters and they don't work. When I saw that the product was wireless ready I assumed I could use any other USB device. Sony doesn't have to charge so much for an adaptor either, $80 is insane, I'm considering getting the wired LAN and running it through my house in protest.
What's great about it: works fine
What's not so great: have to pay $80 for wifi

returned

I had a negative experience with this device and returned it within 2 weeks of buying it. It froze on me frequently and, on several occasions, restarted itself when I tried to do simple functions. It ran rather slow as well. However, the biggest issue I had was a unique problem of not being able to connect to certain online streaming services. Sony customer service was UNABLE to solve the problem, it was the device itself.
What's great about it: cheap
What's not so great: You get what you pay for. It works, mostly...
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Not the SONY I expected. Had to Update right out of box Locks up when using a number of Internet Movie suppliers like NetFlix, etc. Have to disconnect Power to "Reset" when it Locks Up, as there is no way (for 3 hours) to turn it Off, go back, etc. Sorry, but there has to be better out there DG
What's great about it: none
What's not so great: Slow, Locks Up, not user freindly

WORTHLESS web apps
on March 1, 2011
Posted by: SonyPurchaser
Blu Ray functionality is great… web apps are HORRIBLE. One of the main reasons I purchased the unit was the variety of web apps it offers. Unfortunately, their poor functionality has me regretting this purchase. The Netflix app will only display what you have placed in your instant queue via your computer. The Hulu Plus app refuses to refresh and sync with the changes you have made via your computer. It also doesn't respond when you delete/remove items from your queue. I've even gone as far as deleting our account from the Blu Ray player's app and reconfiguring it. That didn't correct the issue. Unfortunately, I've had to move my son's XBox back into the living room in order to use our Netflix and Hulu Plus accounts. I would not recommend purchasing this unit if you are interested in using its web apps. THEY ARE WORTHLESS!!!
What's great about it: BluRay functions
What's not so great: Web related apps are WORTHLESS

Bad netflix and hulu apps, really hurts

On netflix you can only view your instant Queue, no browsing movies. Needs a serious update to fix this. On all of my other gadgets I can search netflix movies and watch them instantly.
Hulu makes it impossible to find shows. You have to know what you want to watch, no new discoveries. Every thing is in a folder. its like trying to find a lost file on your computer, you have to go browse TV->full episodes->pick a letter->then you have to scroll through the show. you can't just click hulu and then see shows you like and new recomendations, like on the desktop app.
If they fix these two things, it would be perfect.
What's great about it: Great design, easy to use, lots of extra online apps
What's not so great: Netflix is terrible, hulu plus could be better
