My company uses these for commercial purposes because it's the most reliable and easiest to use of the many video capture cards we tried. We especially like that it doesn't stop recording if there's a glitch in the tape or loss of control track.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great looking device, very sad performance.

Simple to connect RCA to USB on iMac, but very disappointed with the video output. The captured movies are banded, with blothchy color. Same VHS tape and player performed well on my 32" TV, so it isn't the tape or the VCR causing the problem.
I used my iPad to film the TV screen and that worked much better.
I also tried using my iPhone to capture the video on the TV screen and that worked marginally better than the iPad.

Terrible

Have to be a sleuth to find the app to download. I connected the device to my VCR and computer via the instructions and installed the required software. When I run the software it just pops up a window that states: "Please connect your Elgato Video Capture hardware to any USB 2.0 port." I tried unplugging the USB cable several times and tried multiple computers with the same results.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Output video has many static-like glitches

I bought this about a week ago. Setup was easy enough. I tried capture from my 8mm camcorder tapes. The early results showed frequent image scrambling with periods of decent video. The image from the camcorder screen was excellent. I also fed the same video into another video capture device and it did not have this problem so I am convinced that the elgato device is flawed. I tried it on Windows 11 and windows 10 laptops with the same results.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Just bought one of these last week (Sep 2020) and I have to say it is absolutely BRILLIANT. It is so easy and simple to use. It does what it says and I have shared video footage with my niece, who's Daddy died when she was just 7 months old. Thank you Elgato from the bottom of my (and my Niece's) heart.

Easy to use , Not for idiots.

Ive converted hundreds upon hundreds of vhs,8mm,mini dv tapes & more using this unit. Alot of these reviews are user errors, yes read that correctly people..USER ERROR. The click popn from vhs tapes is easy to fix just disconnect then reconnect usb cable before recording. I have no idea what these reviews are on about & I have 2 elgato converters & use them 24/7 , as with most things in life its usually user error 99.9% of the time.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Useless on macOS Big Sur

Crashes upon startup, if you reopen say 10 times if might work. If you click on the video window it will crash you will lose your recording.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Driver is out of date and does not work Win 10/11
