4k player hidden costs
on September 29, 2013
Posted by: MeNearDetroit
While the picture quality is good, most movies cost $30. If your ISP meters your connection be sure to turn off the automatic downloads or you may be charged an overage fee too. The TV supports 3D but Netflix and Hulu have no content. I had to run out and rent one to test. Sony Video Unlimited should add 3D content. In my opinion a 4K movie should cost less than a theater ticket and a 3D movie should cost as much or less than a rental.

Compatibility Issues
on July 15, 2013
Posted by: rokfrd
Really Sony? The goal is to gain 4K adoption. You're discouraging the adoption and neglecting many of your own customers. This is an unnecessarily difficult upgrade path with too many restrictions. TV compatibility issues (even with your own displays and projectors). Silly on-site technician requirements. Activation issues. AV Receiver issues further complicate the matter. Become an industry leader and allow open adoption of this player, regardless of the display type and only then will you begin creating true 4K Sony fans!
What's great about it: Could have been an awesome product
What's not so great: Is not an awesome product
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hi there! Thank you for your feedback. Sony is committed to delivering the best home entertainment experience to consumers and the 4K Ultra HD TV will display a superb picture and enhance content to 4K resolution. As we near the launch of the Video Unlimited 4K service later this summer, we devised the necessary solution to ensure that our customers can enjoy more varieties of 4K content/service as much as possible. Video Unlimited 4K will require a new component be added to some 4K Ultra HD TVs. The result of this replacement will be compatibility with the new FMP-X1 4K Ultra HD Media Player and Video Unlimited 4K network video service and safeguard access to the content. To ensure the activation will be conducted smoothly, a Sony-authorized service technician will need to access the TV. We hope this helps - please let us know if you have further concerns/questions.

This product does not work
on January 17, 2014
Posted by: afmodb
this product does not seem to be working at all. I spent over 7 hrs with tech support over the phone. I bought 2 new routers, new HDMI cables, new power line adapters, and new cat 5 cables, and I am still at the same screen of death in which my tv cannot connect to player. Total disappointment. This product was not release ready. Did not expect this from Sony.

Will not work out of box with new 55 or 65 4k tv
on July 6, 2013
Posted by: Air360
Sony needs to place a disclaimer on this product that it will not work out of box and you need to have a tech come to your house to replace something on the new xbr 4k series TVs. Completely incompatible and when I tried to hook up to my new denon 4k receiver it blew out one of my Hdmi connections on the back. I was excited to try finally true 4k content and now I have to wait two weeks to see if it will work. Just a warning for all who want to buy this for your 65-55 xbr 900s 4k TVs .
What's great about it: If it works finally 4 k content
What's not so great: Won't work until tech comes to house to install

Thank you for reviewing the media server. Select units of Sony’s XBR-55/65X900A, 4K Ultra HD TVs will require the free in-home evaluation and activation visit from an authorized technician to ensure compatibly between the TV and FMP-X1. Owners are encouraged to visit www.4kactivation.com to check if they have one of the qualifying TVs.
As for your note regarding the disclaimer on the box, we do indicate on the packaging that the FMP-X1 is made exclusively for select Sony 4K Ultra HD TVs and ask that customers confirm compatibility at www.4kactivation.com .
Sorry to hear about your receiver, there is a sticker placed on the rear of the 4K Ultra HD Media Player that indicates specific HDMI outputs for Video and one for Audio.

Needs to mature

4K content looks great if you're willing to watch the download progress bar for 3.5 hrs. (depending on your Mbps), since an update is needed to allow Input change while downloading.
Sony Product Support, please find a resolution for all of our sanity.

I love the 4K player since day one
on March 30, 2014

I have been using the device with 65 inch 4K since last summer. I find the storage and delivery to be perfect. I love how FAST the interface is ready when you press the one button on the remote. It is brilliant. Do not listen to the whining on this. This is exactly the way I want TV to work. (Next, Sony will produce a TV that can fully preserve cable/satellite settings for people who have no clue. You know, the provider changes something and the no-clue person must have help for a reset). Last summer there were issues with paying for movies. The system required ultra security for credit card. To get on with it, I had to pay in advance before I went shopping... and I hate it when I am periodically prompted for security codes. I have yet to try a simple charge it to my card purchase since all the fuss. Since I hate the commercial pay system required to fill a "wallet", I really want the credit card security perfected.
I have loved the free stuff and most of the movies that I bought. I love the quality of the old and the new. My favorite so far was "American Hustle." Spectacular 4k quality, plus the film is brilliant. The Clark Gable movie is fantastic in 4K. Other than security delays, I love everything about the player. Waiting for download is not a problem if you buy, ...if you rent, I would prefer a system that lets you download now and view at your convenience. I can see why one should pay up front for that privilege to wait to view. Just a month would do it for me. I don't want to download and have to view within a couple days. No one's schedule is protected enough for that.
I am filling up the player. I want Sony to suggest precisely how I should expand the capacity. Should I buy a hard disk from Sony? Should I wait for a specific new device that will include improvements? Please advise the first generation users Sony!
