Great expectations not fulfilled

What a disappointing product.
I got only one (1) free movie, Elysium. Apparently the offer of several free movies expired in December 2013.
I did get plenty of uninteresting 2-4 minute demo clips that are just taking up space.
For some reason, 1.7 TB out of 2 TB are in use, and I haven't downloaded anything yet. There is no indication how to specify what will be deleted when I want that space for some movies. All I can find is a trash can icon on each video. It will take a long time to manually delete the unwanted videos one at a time.
Movies are overpriced at around $30 to buy.
The $7 rentals must be viewed within 24 hours of purchase, and take hours to download, so you really need to plan ahead and plan precisely. This is really stupid. Give me 24 hours from the time I press Play!
So far, all the 4K videos I've viewed are in 16:9 format, so they don't fill my 2.35:1 projection screen.
And, of course, you only get the very limited selection that Sony offers.
The FMP-X1 could be great. The disappointments are not technical in nature; the hardware is fine. Sony could make this product better by improving movie selection, lowering purchase prices, and making the rental policy more liberal.

Don't Buy!

This is an expensive piece of hardware that I have added to my system. The preloaded films are from one to five minute glamor shots, worthless value. Each movie is about $30 and takes several hours to download. You are better off getting the 4K up-loader on a blue ray device. Very disappointed in Sony.

A glimpse of a great service to come!
on December 1, 2013

This new 4K media server offers a glimpse of the incredible picture that your new 4K TV can produce and gets you ready to download the new 4K content as soon as it becomes available. This is what makes the purchase worthwhile. (The only other very limited 4K content I have found available is on YouTube.) This media server ships with quite a few short 4K videos, originated in 4K, that are truly spectacular and make me eager for more 4K originated content ASAP!! However, we also tried one full-length Hollywood movie, and it appeared merely upscaled to 4K resolution, unfortunately not nearly as clear and awesome as the short videos that are originated in 4K. For me, the promise of this media server and this new service is entirely in new originated 4K content, not in upconverted material.
The media server is plug-n-play and works perfectly out of the box, with one exception that lowers my rating to 4 stars from 5. I am having a compatibility issue from the HDMI2 audio port to a third-party sound bar, and I believe I have isolated the problem to the media server. I have contacted support and fully expect the problem to be resolved to my satisfaction, perhaps with a firmware upgrade if it turns out that I am correct. When that is fixed I will post an update and raise my rating to a full 5 stars.

Very Disappointed

For what this device costs it's appealing how lousy the free content is. The device is slow, takes forever to download movies even on a hard wired 100mbps connection and, there is an overall lack of movies. As neat as it is to be able to watch 4k content, the library available to me can be watched in a month or two. Unless this device improves through updates etc I am considering it a complete waste of money. Sony, I'm sorry, this was not your best effort.

Excellent Quality

The quality of the picture and sound great. The movie download speed, after purchasing a movie, is slow (even though I have 40Gb download speed and no other service has any issue). But it is worth waiting.
I originally had issues (Media player was not turning on) when both TV (Sony 65XBR900A) and Media Player were connected to the same 4-port power-line (Linksys) network adapter. After changing the connection to wireless on the TV, the system now works without any issue. Sony support could not explain the reason. Otherwise, system works good.

Needs build in Wifi

havent been able to test it as my router is on the first floor and the tv is in the second floor where the family room is and there is no connections for it. You need to come out with a model that offers both ethernet and wifi AC. Maybe even offer a free upgrade to customers like me that purchased the sony 4k tv 65in.

Great unit, but I'm waiting for content
on May 3, 2014

The 4K Ultra HD Media Player is a solid unit, technically excellent, and the content available that is *sourced* in 4K renders a jaw dropping gorgeous picture! I am very pleased with the unit itself, its reliability, and its functionality. That's the good news. The bad news is the limited 4K content currently available and the severely limited 4K content that is actually *sourced* in 4K (originally shot in 4K, not upscaled). I am waiting for much more sourced 4K content to become available in order for the potential and promise of this unit to be realized. When that happens I will eagerly raise my rating of this product to 5 stars!

FMP-X1

The media player is nice for the 4k videos, but they don't have a lot to choose from, you have only one free movie that you get,you need to have a good download speed, the one problem that i don't like is that if you are using a sony sound bar via the ARC and if you want to use the audio out hdmi on the media player it will not switch the signal to the sound bar,you can still get decent sound though.
