WIFI Problem
on April 14, 2014
Posted by: harry2803
If u do not have a direct connection to your router via hardwire ur out of luck with this. My router is upstairs and unless I run a 50 ft line from my router to connect this box Im out of luck. I called support and they told me to call my cable company. This device is not wi-fi and u cant rig it! However I got this free with the TV I just bought. I'm really upset over this and thinking about sending TV back with the Media Player. No wonder most reviews I read about this device are bad!
Response from sony.comBy JoeySonyApril 15, 2014
We certainly understand why you might feel that way. However if a wired connection is not possible due to the location of the router in your home a powerline adapter is a good alternative. If a powerline adapter is not an option due to environmental issues or a unique home set up, adding a second router would allow you to make an wired or Ethernet connection in a second room. Horrible Product!
on April 18, 2014

Do not purchase this product! There are audio output issues with certain AV receivers. Just got off phone with Sony Support and they are aware that the HDMI2 output for audio to a surround sound system does not work with Pioneer, Pioneer Elite, McIntosh and Integra receivers, to name a few. There is no firmware update to fix this. And the 10 free movies that were included when I first looked at this product are a thing of the past. They are now giving them away free with huge discounts on 4K TVs. In my opinion, Sony has become an also-ran amount the industry leaders and this product just shows how far they have fallen.

I can't complain that Sony rushed into production of the 4k tvs but nobody twisted my arm to buy it. At least sony is standing by their product and sending someone out to update my tv so I can use it. Would you ever get that with cheap Korean tvs from the competitors like Samsung? Good Luck getting them to stand by their product like Sony
What's great about it: can't say any pros yet
What's not so great: can't use it right now
I would recommend this to a friend!

Bring on the Programming
on July 18, 2013

This companion server to the XBR65 makes for some really excellent 4K images, although some of the pre-packed films do not look any better than the Blu-ray equivalent, so that is disappointing. The control of the server (from TV remote) is a bit sluggish in changing the screen image, and slow in getting the counter display for running time before it disappears from screen.
The HDMI(1) carries video and audio and must be connected directly to the #4 input (modified on my) XBR. There is a second HDMI(2) for audio only, but selecting it removes audio from (1) ....so SONY if you build a TV with superior sound (which it has) why can't you make audio available at both HDMI outputs simultaneously? Is this something possible for a future update?
Overall, the FMP X1 brings the 4K television full circle, now bring on the programming!
What's great about it: Stunning quality on many of the feature films and shorts, powers on/off when selected as input
What's not so great: Two HDMI outputs should have audio available on both, NOT either/or
I would recommend this to a friend!

Regarding the questions in the comments section.... Great questions! This media player will play 4K. As of right now, we cannot upload or stream via an external HDD connected to this media player and due to copyright issues, we cannot transfer movies from the Media Server to an external HDD. We cannot comment on 8K or h.265 at this time. Thanks!

Thanks for your feedback and your suggestion about making audio available at both HDMI outputs! Stay tuned for more 4K content :)

Really Sony???

So at time of launch I purchased the Sony VPL-VW1000ES 4K mainly based on Sony demos showing 4K clips including The Amazing Spiderman. We were all told Sony was planning to release a 4K server which would allow us to see 4K on it. Well, over a year later the FMP-X1 is here and guess what? It is NOT compatible with the 1000ES! How fair is that? We invested in your new technology only to be left out. The 1000ES is $25,000! We have been waiting to see true native 4K movies which were demonstrated on it at all the shows. We are planning to buy a couple 4K TVs this fall but at this point they won't be Sony. It is not fair for you to change the rules as you go. There is going to be a 90% return rate of X1. This needs to be resolved immediately. Sony needs to support those that have supported them...
What's great about it: Native 4K Resolution
What's not so great: Doesn't work with other 4K TVs including Sony's other 4K models
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Thank you for your feedback. We highly value our first in-home 4K customers, those who have the VPL-VW1000ES, the first 4K projector designed for the home theater and are currently developing a solution path to provide in-home, native 4K content for those customers. We anticipate a public announcement of details to coincide with the launch of Video Unlimited 4K.

Whoops

Bought it, Sony techs will come out in two weeks and set it up so hopefully it works. I tried the tech over the phone, forget that, it not compatible with the TV. really it was made for this TV. don't buy and think it will work out of the box, some will some won't, no rhyme or reason just the way it is. I will review again when it works in a couple of weeks.
What's great about it: Doesn't work
What's not so great: Cost
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Thanks for your input. Not every Sony 4K UHD TV will require the free in-home premium service activation, in some instances the 4K TV can be immediately paired with the FMP-X1 right out of the box. Thank you for taking the time to visit www.4kactivation.com to confirm that your TV qualified for the activation.

Can not get audio
on October 24, 2013
Posted by: dreaux
The X1 works fine except I can not get audio from the X1 HDMI 2. I had my first one replaced and tried again and I got audio from the X1 HDMI 2 for about 20 minutes and it dropped out and did not come back again.
Now I have to use the optical out of the TV set to get audio and it is only 2 channels.
I even tried different receivers to see if my AVR was bad, still no audio out of the X1.
I will just have to use the optical out on the back of the TV, no 5..1 audio for me.

Need more 4K media/movies
Response from sony.comBy Scott FuentesSony Support USASeptember 5, 2013
Hi OldAndOldAndBustedHotness, Sony is more than an electronics innovator. We are leaders in 4K entertainment from production, through distribution, all the way to cinemas and into the living room. A major benefit and differentiator of buying a Sony 4K television is access to true 4K content thanks to our partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment. When Video Unlimited 4K launches later this summer, you should see more available content.
