The pause and serve feature relies on a small plastic tab to keep the filter basket in place. If you remove the filter basket to empty the filter over time the tab gets worn out or bent. The pot will push against the pause and serve stopper and instead of raising the stopper it lifts the filter basket. The coffee fills up in the filter basket instead of draining from it. This will cause an overflow onto the counter once the filter basket has backed up far enough. If it looks like the lid isn’t flush to the surrounding surface when closed then it is likely that the stopper didn’t open and the basket raised instead due to the basket tab or clip not working. Overflow will be likely to occur. When removing the filter basket I wear dishwashing gloves to protect from heat. Then I gently flex the tab behind the stopper towards the front of the coffee pot. When reinstalling the filter basket make sure that the tab makes it safely through the hole for the pause and serve stopper on the bottom of the filter basket. I gently flex the tab forward slightly when reinstalling. This is why I suspect most people have had their counters flooded with hot coffee. Hopefully the engineers redesign this. The other aspects of this coffee pot work well.

This is my second Cuisinart coffee maker. I loved the first one, but unfortunately it only lasted 2 years. I hope this one outlasts the other one and then some. With that said, this is easy to use and makes really good hot coffee. What more could you want?
