My experience with the ASUS BW-16D1X-U has been positive. I have found the unit to be very good... Since I already had Cyberlink installed on my computer I've had no issues burning any type of media on this unit. The only thing I've noticed is that sometimes it does not write as fast as expected, but that more than likely has to do more with my computer's processing power rather than the BW-16D1X-U. The main thing I use it for is burning old home movies, tapes, data, etc, to Blu-Ray, and because I am not in any big hurry, it matters very little to me how quick or long it may take to burn a disc as long as the end result is good.
I got this drive to archive home videos, and photos. So far I'm satisfied with the results. I wanted this model for the speed, and the fact that it has it's own power. I've tried those "slim" drives that only need usb, but always had problems with not enough power, and a failed burn. I've used this on my mac and PC without any issue.
After much research I chose this drive for the brand, reviews, speed and ability to record M-Disks. I’ve used it for an average of 12 hours per day and it has proven to be reliable and problem free.
Purchased this external drive since the new towers don't have optic drives anymore. This one had very good reviews plus it has fast read and write speeds and is USB 3.0. Sure it might cost a bit more but it's worth it. You get what you pay for and so far this is a reliable and fast drive.
less than a week after i bought it .. it stopped reading disks .. tried the so called "warranty" contact.. but of course no soap.. always out of the time frame.. i ended up tossing it into trash as it would probably be better as land fill than an actual burner ..
