Received the AM09 Hot+Cool Jet Focus. As we already have an older AM04 Hot+Cool, we had an idea of what to expect.
Packaging - the item arrives well packaged and easy to remove; the only interesting part is figuring out how to get the plug out of the separate packing it is in (hint - hold the plug and PULL, or disassemble that packaging).
Assembly - relatively straight forward assembly; you only have to attach the base with a simple turn and click once everything is aligned.
Size - the unit is fairly small; only about two feet tall and 6 inches wide.
Unit Digital Display - very easy to read digital readout of airflow level/temperature/mode; great idea showing a red lighted circle when heating and blue when fan only.
Airflow - If you are not familiar with Dyson fans, they have a ring housing with a slot around the inner circumference (no blades). The internal mechanism accelerates air out of the slot, which sucks additional air in through the back of the ring, with the result being more air pushed out the front. The suction is not noticeable unless you have your hand right at the back of the unit, so no danger of sucking nearby items through the unit. We have four cats, so the idea of having a bladeless fan/heat unit avoids a possible ugly and messy end to one of the poor creatures. The gentle airflow (even at the highest setting) also prevents them from imitating a flying squirrel when strolling in front of the unit. Even at the highest setting, the AM09 is much quieter than any other fan we have used. The major difference in the AM09 from the earlier unit is the Jet Focus or Personal mode; this uses a second internal slot to narrow and concentrate the airflow more. This means you can heat or cool a smaller area (like just yourself) instead of an entire room. You feel more of the airflow at the edges of the fan pattern, meaning if you are sitting somewhere with the AM09 pointing towards you it is not that noticeable. The airflow can be varied between 1 and 10.
Oscillation & Tilt Functions - Oscillation is about 90 degrees or so, and is nice, slow and gentle. It is also very simple to tilt the housing to redirect the flow higher or lower, but is definitely a two-handed operation. It "slides" more than tilts; you hold the base with one hand and then grip the bottom of the unit and "slide" it back or forwards to tilt the unit. Oscillation also works with the unit tilted.
Cooling - When we received the unit and started it up, we were initially disappointed in the perceived lack of airflow, being accustomed to the wind-tunnel type of fans most of us have used previously. At first you would not think that this small unit could possibly be effective at cooling (or heating) a room. But, fairly quickly, you realize how much more comfortable the room is becoming without blowing everything that is not tied down into the next county. It is actually very refreshing compared to old-style fans.
Heating - the AM09 does a surprising job of heating a room. It is not a concentrated blast furnace of heat; it heats in a more diffuse manner by warming and mixing the air. Since it is summer we have only used it in the bathroom during showers with the oscillation on and were surprised how effectively it heated the room. When it reaches the temperature you have set, the oscillation and fan stops until the temperature drops a degree or so, then it starts up again. Otherwise, if just the heating shut down, the fan would be cooling the air it was just heating. Nice touch, Dyson.
Sleep Timer - you can set the AM09 to automatically go to standby after a specific length of time.
Remote Control - easy magnetic attachment to the top of the housing to help prevent loss. Remote is light and easy to operate, although the button graphics blend in a bit too much with the background and can be challenging to read sometimes. Everything can be controlled with the remote (except tilt); power, mode, temperature, airflow, sleep timer, oscillation. The remote is fairly directional, though; you need to point it towards the digital readout at the base of the unit for it to operate correctly.
Summary - if you are expecting a hurricane-force wind and looking like you just stepped out of an astronaut training centrifuge after being in front of this fan, then you are in for a bit of a disappointment with the AM09. Dyson is all about classy looks and subtlety; useful items without intruding too much on your daily lifestyle. This is a great fan for heating or cooling a room or just yourself. We now have a number of Dyson vacuums and fans; they may be a bit more expensive than others, but you get what you pay for, and with Dyson you pay for quality and durability.

This is the second Dyson fan I have owned, the first is not a cooling/heating fan. This fan is AMAZING, I definitely prefer this to the regular fan.
I love the fact that you can tilt it to blow air up as well as straight on. I really like the fact that you can change it to blow around you instead of directly at you. It heats up quickly and pumps out alot of heat for a little fan.
The only complaint I have is that the magnetic portion of the fan doesn't seem to hold the remote as well as the larger fan.

This fan heater is sleek, powerful, and quiet. There are a lot of ways to customize it for your needs. The fan part tilts as well as oscillates, and the air power is adjustable as well. There is a remote included, which controls both temperature and air speed settings. This version even has a timer and a button on the remote which lets the user adjust from personal cooling or heating to whole room mode. This is a huge upgrade from the previous model. My only (minor) complaint is that to me, the digital display is very bright. If you sleep in a dark room, or are watching a movie with the lights off, the light is obtrusive. (Again, it is to me, but it doesn't bother my husband at all.) Of course, this is a small complaint when I consider the whole machine. It's well engineered and looks cool. I highly recommend this product for anyone considering it-I don't think you will regret it.

Have an upstairs bedroom which is always stuffy and hot despite home air-conditioning and put this fan/heater in room and turned it to cooling at low speed and amazing results! For once the room was cool and comfortable all night long and the sound put us to sleep like a sleep machine. Now this upstairs bedroom is as comfortable as the other rooms in the house. The air is constant and even flow, not drafty. The remote control is a plus! Can control the fan speed, the temperature and it even has a timer to automatically turn it off. You can tilt the whole top of unit to direct the air up or down. Can hardly wait to try the heating mode in the winter. I turned it on and it was pretty warm but right now the temperatures outside are hitting 100 degrees. This fan is well worth the cost!

Used it for the first time yesterday and it cooled our house so fast that we ended up turning it off for a while. Looking forward to the wintertime so I can see how quickly it will heat up the house! Love it!
