nice fan but noisy

I wanted a Dyson fan because I had seen (and not heard) a different model Dyson fan. But this one is rather loud with and without heat. The heat is great and warms up the room quickly. The fan is nice. But with the noise, it's no better than any other fan or heater, just minus the blades. Not worth the money and I certainly would never recommend this.
We needed some supplemental heating in chilly areas and I wanted thermostatic control, not just "hi" or "lo". I liked the idea that it was not bulky. Words like "turbine" and reviews of the earlier products made me concerned about the noise but this AM09 is whisper quiet.
If I have the math right, the spec of 6 gallons per second works out to about 50 cfm (in American units) which is pretty modest air movement. It would be best in a small space or one where you have another fan around to circulate the heat farther away.
I am a retired technical writer. Let me just say that the instruction booklet is underwhelming in the communications department. It is visually pretty but it took a bunch of experimenting to figure out what the sketches and icons actually meant for me in functional terms.
I'm disappointed by the design of the controls, which puts everything on the remote control. As I've read in other reviews, this means you really have to not lose the control or you won't be able to operate the machine completely. (You can still turn it on or off and, if you remember the "secret" dodge of holding down the power button and pressing it up to 66 times in order to change the temperature by one degree, can adjust the temperature somehow.) Don't misplace the control.
I really prefer having physical controls that make some kind of intuitive sense on my appliances. The single "idiot button" control is very fashionable but really pretty useless for someone who wants to use all the features of the machine. Why not have the buttons there with a slick fashionable sliding cover? And wouldn't it be nice to have dials instead of just mystifying buttons?
The design of the remote control is pretty peculiar. Once I figure it out, I'm going to have to annotate the control itself by taping explanations onto it. Otherwise, the (large) instruction booklet is going to have be attached to the machine so I don't lose it. These controls just don't make much sense to me I'm afraid.
"Cool mode" should be called "Fan only" mode. It doesn't cool in any US based sense of the word so calling it "cool" is misleading.
In heating mode, the thermostat seems to work well and the heat cycles off and on. I'm puzzled though by why the fan seems to stay operating when the heat is off (I can feel air flowing). This makes it into "cool mode" doesn't it? Why isn't the fan off when the heat is off?
I purchased this 2nd unit because of the first one. The first one made such an impression on me for its great looks, efficiency and safety features. My sister-in-law for whom I purchase this unit is a semi-invalid who is very thin and cold affects her tremendously. She was amazed at the unit itself and after we got it set up and showed her how to use the remote(which in her case was an absolute must) it just blew her away at its efficiency and ease of use. She sets her unit at 78 degrees and uses fan speed #4 to heat her bedroom. She is very pleased with your product and has already told more of her family about it. Thank you for making my sister-in-law very comfortable and very happy.
I purchased this machine to supplement heating a small room(10x12) in which i spend most of my time. I usually have the thermostat for my central heating set on 68 degrees. But with the beamed ceilings I have it doesn't hold the heat but traps most at the ceiling. I set your machine on 68 degrees and to my surprise in only about 15 minutes I could tell the difference. The room was much warmer then the rest of the house. So I now set the house temperature around 62 at night and use your fine unit to heat the room to a nice toasty 68 degrees with the fan speed on #1. The craftsmanship and quality of the unit is outstanding. The safety systems work very well as I have 2 cats and they have tumbled it our twice so far without any damage and the unit shut down. I highly recommend this product for its reliably, craftsmanship, great design, safety features and efficiency. Thank for a well made product.
We've been using this fan since summer, it's worked well in all situations. In the summer, it's great for adding a little directed cooling breeze to the room. In the fall, we've been using it to give a little heating boost to one of the draftier bedrooms. It's super quiet, but still manages to move a good amount of air.
Worst money we ever spent. Your product does NOT heat as it advertises. We purchased this heater to help keep our family room warm; however, it is not very effective. Actually from about 10 feet away the air feels like it is cold, not hot. There is no way I would recommend this to anyone and truly regret purchasing this product.
This is my second fan/heater from dyson. I love the first one. We decided to take that one to the cabin and get a second one for home. The new one works different-you don't just turn it on, you have to set the temp at 99 to get the heater going, then turn to the temp you want. The remote with this did not work-i replaced the battery every time i went to use it because the battery was dead every time. Dyson sent me a replacement. I have used it once just to make sure it works and it does.
I have a large Amish Fireplace heater and had 2 small ones. Now only one and the Dyson Hot Cold Fan. I am really enjoying the Hot Cold Fan. I have already used the COOL fan and since fall hit every morning I turn on the Dyson HOT when I get up and it takes the temp. up about 5 degrees in my den within about 10 minutes or so. I really love it. It is compact and a powerhouse. I love all the adjustments. Great product.
