I have cooked indirect- chicken, ribs ,etc using Kingsford briquets for many yrs always with great results until recently when it became obvious that all the "new "briquet products have been redesigned and that they ash up and burn out quickly requiring me to add more briquets to complete my normal cooking cycle. I have now found another brand briquet that performs like the good old Kingsford so I'll go with that until Kingsford (The Netflix of the BBQ world) responds with a useable product.
We have used Kingsford charcoal three or more times a week for decades with excellent results. Now, everything is coming out charred on the outside, even with cutting the amount of charcoal back and keeping the vents closed. So far we still haven't discovered how to adapt our use to duplicate our old, *perfect* results. I don't know how the new charcoal compares to other brands, but it sure can't stand up to the old Kingsford.
We use the "original" kingsford brand at our steakhouse. We absolutely love it. The chefs enjoy grilling with it because it lasts so long and customers have commented on how great their steaks taste. My husband and I own/run a western themed extremely busy steakhouse. You can grill your own or have one of our fantastic chefs grill your entree for you. We have a large grill indoors near the dining room and a grill out on our patio as well. Each grill uses anywhere from 160-180 pounds per night. On extremely busy nights, there have been times where we need to add more charcoal to the grills. We purchase and use 10 pallets of the 2 x 20 bundles every 6 weeks. Now, thats a lot of charcoal and it isnt cheap when you buy it in that amount. Because we are a small business (not a large so-called famous franchise) that uses kingsford charcoal faithfully, maybe... just maybe... one of these days Kingsford will buy me charcoal for a year.... LOL!
I started useing a charcoal grill about 4 years ago after our family started camping and my youngest son said that the food tasted better over charcoal then gas. I use my smoker with my charcoal on weekends . We've also used mesquite but I prefer the original briquets.
I am a Long time users of KIngsford Charcoal. This season I bought a 2x20 lb package as we usually do. I find the new coals don't last as long. The old briquet was larger than the new ones. We have also found they don't last as long. Please go to the old tried and true.back
I have been using kingsford charcoal for over 50 years, my present[charcoal] grill uses preferably lump charcoal,I can & do use kingsford when short of lump charcoal or want to extend more frugally my charcoal usage in my 'GREEN EGG'. I would & do recomend kingsford to my friends, it is reasonably priced & readily availlable in my area.
We donated the use of our smoker for a Boston butt fundraiser. The group has some knock-off brand charcoal and I had to continually put more on the fire all night. Never again, our smoker usually likes only four bags to cook all night. And when you have ninety 10-12 butts in your pit, there's nothing quite like the consistancy and smell of good ole Kingsford regular.
We'll never allow anything but Kingsford in our smoker again!
