from Stevenspoint, Wsconsin,
Kingsford charcoal original and Kingsford lighter fluid are the best there is. I have tried a lot of differant charcoal, they all gave the food a weird taste. I grill out at least 5 days a week. I have made everything beef, lamb, duck, goose, pizza, fish you name it I have grilled it. Even here in central Wisconsin, I grill in all weather, It is the best.
I have used this product forever, in the last 3-5 years the product has been changed. I live in a colder climate but in 40 deg. temps. I cannot get the heat I need for smoke cooking! I have to look for something else.
Used to be we only used Kingsford, but it seems the new product is a total failure! Sure they lite faster but thats all. We used to be able to spit large roasts and birds w/no prob., but not any more!! Its also almost impossible to get a good sear on anything and endup w/a steak the way we like them!!! Too Bad, guess we will going w/a different brand from now on!!
i have recently chaged my cooking style and charcoal to adapt to my new venture.being a comp bbq cook and being being dedicated to lump(royal oak),converting to grills and sml. smoker as to the bigboy.Kingsford allows me the very best in maintainng temp. i can actually tell you how many coals for extended periods ect. It allows me to really dial in my temp.perfect..Although it does not burn as hot as lump,I am now comitted to Kingsford, also went with a Kingsford grill(dual zone) and lovin it....................bbqdave..
Up until recently, as a professional chef for over 30 years, I have been a huge consumer and promoter of Kingsford. However they have apparently made a change to their product that renders it useless for smoking or grilling. This charcoal now fires up and burns out without generating enough heat to put a sear on a steak or even a piece of fish. It burns out so quickly that you are unable to cook chicken or pork without having to add additional coals. It is no longer feasible to use in my smoker because of it's short burn life.Very dissappointing for a brand that set the bar for grilling professionals. I would recommend using natural chunk charcoal and avoid this product until they revert back to their old recipe.
I have been using Kingsford original for many years. Several times I have tried other brands only to go back to Kingsford. Recently I was smoking a pork butt for my neighbor and asked him to get some charcoal. He brought me some off brand and I politely told him that I didn't need it after all and promptly went to the store myself and bought 2 bags of Kingsford to do the job. The only downfall that I can find with the product is that I wish you would bring back the larger, longer lasting brickettes of yester year.
