Loved the ice. Machine didn't last long enough.

I LOVED the ice!! But the machine didn't last long enough for the price I paid. When you pay so much for a product, you'd think it would last longer than a year. We splurged and bought the machine and within 3 months it quit making ice. Talked to the people about the warranty. Sent it back and was sent a refurbished one. (I don't know why it wasn't replaced with a new one). The refurbished one lasted 13 months and quit working. We did everything possible. I have no idea how many times we cleaned it and made sure the water was flowing correctly. It just would not make ice. I know several people who had the same problem. It's really hard to dispose of a machine that cost this much after so little time.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hello. We appreciate you reaching out about your experience, though we truly hate to hear your first machine stopped working after 3 months, and your replacement unit now isn’t working as well. This isn’t the performance we would expect from the model, and we truly regret the inconvenience you’ve experienced. Our team will be informed of your experience for review; your insights are valued, as we always want to ensure we’re aware of any possible issues.
If you still have the Opal, checking that the ice bin is pushed completely into place and resetting the unit by unplugging it for 3 to 4 hours can help resolve some issues. If it might be useful for you, we have further troubleshooting details in these articles:
Support is also available at 1-866-907-6718 or online at myopalservice.com , and those individuals would be glad to assist further. We hope this information is helpful, and we’re always glad to assist if you have any other concerns or questions. -Sarah@GEA
We love Sonic's nugget ice cubes since it keeps things cooler longer but making the trek weekend to weekend for our picnics was exhausting. Now we can make the same great ice anytime we need it! And the added reservoir means we don't have to worry about refills during the party!
Mold build up in the top component! I clean this religiously just as manual suggests! There is NO way to clean this unless you unscrew the top! I noticed flakes in my fresh ice after a year mark and I am SICK over this

I have had this model for a year now and had to replace the original 6 months in. I was fastidious about cleaning the machine per GE's instructions every Monday morning. In began to notice black crap accumulating in the reservoir and didn't realize it was mold. I had been cleaning it weekly so why should I, right? The mold got worse and worse until it blocked the flow to the pump and the pump failed. I got a replacement (although it took 3 month do so). I thought maybe I was not rinsing it enough and that he black stuff was some sort of lining that was deteriorating, so I cleaned it as I did the original but rinsed it even more. Also let the vinegar and bleach solutions sit in it for longer in cleaning. Last week I saw all the black stuff again and I searched it on the internet and found out it was MOLD! My machine was just out of warranty so I opened it up and was shocked at what I saw. See photos. The tubes, interior reservoir and all innerworkings were covered with mold. I removed all tubes and cleaned the machine with a very strong bleach solution and even let it sit all night. Rinsed many times and reassembled. I operated it for one week and checked yesterday. Guess what I found in the lower reservoir again? Mold. See the last photo. My wife and daughters have been having odd health issues that we have been trying to get to the bottom of. My wife's last visit to the doctor was when the doctor said they will be checking for mold exposure next visit. When we checked the records of when her health issues started, we found they coincided with the purchase of our Opal. Internet research shows that GE knows about this and moved the location of the inner reservoir in the second generation unit so it would not sit directly above the heat producing compressor. No recall has ever been issued. I just checked. Even though this is out of warranty as of last month, I want all my money back and or I am going to a lawyer and pursuing legal action against the company. I will post this on the shopping site where I got the machine as well. GE, you know what I want. Feel free to reach out
When we first purchased this product we were so excited. We live in Arizona and its HOT! For a year and a half, this product produced ice perfectly. We love it! A couple of weeks ago, the motor started making a unfamiliar sound and overheating. We decided to purchase a new one, because we love this one so much. We did not register it when we got the first one. (That is on us. we accept responsibility) Registering this new unit, will give us peace of mind, and if we run into a problem we will definitely contact GE. We have ALL GE appliances in our home. Very happy with them. That's why we purchased this ice maker again.

I love my ice machine! It is pretty great. My only complaint is it goes into defrost mode all the time.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Hello, thank you so much for reaching out with this feedback. We are so happy to hear that you love this ice maker, but we can definitely understand your frustration with the machine going into defrosting mode too often. We are so sorry for the inconvenience this has caused for you.
We would recommend making sure that this machine has at least three inches of clearance on all sides. More information can be found here: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=000062724

We purchased this unit for our office staff, approximately 30 people, and it makes the perfect amount of ice for us on a daily basis. We all thoroughly love this machine and the quality of the ice that it produces.
