Very disappointed

I really wanted to love this machine but I don’t. It takes at least 3 hours to get a useable amount of ice. The bin starts filling but the ice will melt as fast as it is produced even after putting a fan on the machine to keep it cool. The side tank is another issue - it will not feed the machine even after following the troubleshooting instructions several times. I’m very disappointed with the performance especially considering how much it costs.

Good while it lasts

Works great for 2 years. We have had 2 of these ice makers. I clean is monthly. I use distilled water and after 2 years it stops making ice and says it needs cleaned. I clean it and the next day says it needs cleaned again. After 2 of these Only lasting 2 years I will be looking for another type/brand of ice maker that will last longer. Makes great ice while the machine lasts.

Great ice, not great quality machine

Love the ice and how quickly it's made. Machine started making awful grinding noises. GE warranty support was great and I sent it in and they sent me a replacement unit. Within 4 hours of secon unit's install, the same noises and other malfunctions occurred. Warranty support still good..... just sent it in and awaiting a new unit. The great ice got it 3 stars but seeing as though I'm on my 3rd one since December 2025, I'm not impressed with the machine's quality for the price.

We'd like to provide some tips to ensure optimum performance of your Opal ice maker. We recommend only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. It is recommended that you follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for your unit regarding the schedule of running descaling and sanitizing cycles. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale. It is recommended that there be at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow so that the fan can move air about the unit. We do see that you've been in contact with our Opal Support Team, and we recommend continuing to work with us directly on this.

Disappointed
on January 8, 2026

It was a great ice maker for short period of time but unfortunately it stopped working. It's making a horrible squealing noise and doesn't make ice. I have cleaned it weekly and descaled it. Very disappointed. It's a shame such an expensive product didnt last longer.

We’re like to assist with the issues you’re having with sound, and the Opal not making ice. We have information about what sounds you may hear at this link: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=35276

We also have tips about what to try to address an issue with ice production in this article: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=39628. Among other tips, we recommend disconnecting the Opal from power for three to four hours before reconnecting, to reset it; this may help with both issues.

We’ll also be reaching out over email to discuss this situation with you further. We look forward to hearing back from you, so we can help solve this.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We purchased this model around 2 years ago and it just quit, creating a lot of heat and noise. We just purchased the same model, (due to it being on sale) to replace it and going to see if it lasts longer. For the money, I hope so.

We're sorry to hear you had an issue with your previous Opal not working properly, and making abnormal sounds and generating heat. As long as you follow the recommended cleaning and descaling guidelines in the Use and Care Manual, and only use distilled water in the unit, we're confident this replacement unit will serve you well for years to come.
