Black Mold show up quickly with NO remedy
on October 10, 2022

We use filtered and then triple osmosis water (meaning that we strip out all the minerals and potential contaminants.). Unit starts getting black mold after a few months even with recommended cleaning. We would then use nylon pipe cleaners to get as much out as we can. Eventually, it got so bad we took the unit apart and found the water reservoir with the UV light in it was thick with black mold. Because it took us over a year to figure out the recommended cleaning was not sufficient... they do not warranty the product. So it is just trash now.

Hello- We are very sorry to hear you are having this experience with your Opal Nugget Ice Maker. This is a great model and we would like to help! We know being able to ‘rinse’ the Opal as part of the cleaning cycle is important, and we’re glad to advise. Cleaning instructions will vary depending on which model Opal you own. If your model has a round button on the front, we have cleaning and descaling instructions (including discussion of rinsing) in this article: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=39640&_ . We even have a video for your convenience.

For most models, the switch to change from ice production to cleaning is on the back of the unit. We hope this information is helpful. If you have an Opal that doesn’t have a large round button on the front, checking your owner’s manual for instructions may be best. If you have any difficulty, or any other questions or concerns, you’re always welcome to contact us over our social media – we’d be more than happy to assist further. Thank you! Joyce@GEA
Great product. Love the quality of the ice. Wish it made larger quantity but we bag it and freeze it for our large get togethers. Need to rewrite instructions.
Very noisy when making ice. It's louder than my full size fridge. Requires weekly cleaning. Always have to go back to the user manual to remind me with the light indicator significance….

Great product, makes lots of ice quickly. Love the pebble ice. One problem is that now about 3 months into owning it is starting to make some weird noises. Every once in awhile there is a grinding noise and also now a squeaking noise when making ice.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Hi - We are delighted to hear how happy you are with your fabulous Opal icemaker and understand your concern regarding the new noises it has started making. Please make sure you have a minimum of 3" air clearance on all sides of the unit and we strongly recommend following the cleaning and descaling instruction faithfully. This information can be found on pages 7-9 of the owner's manual -- https://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=49-1000418-8.pdf --
If the noise should continue or get worse, please review page 17 of your manual for the details of your warranty. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. Kind regards - Vikki@GEA
The Opal ice make makes fantastic ice. We use it daily and like it so much we bought two. I'm into Tiki cocktails and rely on this machine for the high quality ice they need. However, both units have required me to pull the back apart and add oil to the motor. It wasn't terribly difficult, but the noise it made was so awful I almost tossed the first machine when it first began malfunctioning. Some quick Youtube searching and a special screwdriver set and everything was back in business. But I would think for the price, it wouldn't require this kind of repair.

Hi - We are truly grateful you took the time to share your insight into the operation of your Opal ice makers and apologize for the difficulty you had with both of your units. Please accept our apologies for your disappointment and the inconvenience these issues caused you.
Here at GE Appliances, we do not recommend the disassembly of the ice maker as you have described or any attempt to lubricate any internal components.
Our recommendation is to follow the instructions in the owner's manual regarding regular cleaning and descaling of the unit. If you have an issue with the unit beyond that, we recommend calling the Opal Service team at 1-866-907-6718 for assistance. Kind regards - Vikki@GEA
