I received a replacement under warranty for my Opal ice maker less than a year ago. The cleaning cycle just failed - water with bleach doesn’t circulate and motor makes a grinding sound during cycle (initiation upon yello lit button pushed). I’m exhausted dealing with a medical device my post stage 4 cancer patient spouse requires. GE should make a reliable ice maker if I’m asked by his treatment team to purchase it.

We absolutely love this ice machine. Our old one quit on us and we immediately replaced it. It is used more than the average family, I’m sure. To us it is worth the investment. We will never be without one now. I don’t think there’s been anyone ever come into our home that hasn’t said they would love to have one. Everyone thinks it is as awesome as we do!!!

Great machine but needs a few improvements

We purchased this ice maker because the crushed ice feature on our refrigerator ice maker kept jamming and breaking. And because I love the "good" ice. I definitely recommend the side tank so you dont have to fill the reservoir too often. I've had it about a month and it works great.
It was easy to set up and fits nicely on the counter. But its not exactly portable. While it can be moved, it weighs a LOT, so its not easy. Its also awkward with the the hose to the side tank that needs to be disconnected. So definitely decide where you want it before hooking it all up.
There are a few design issues that make it less than perfect. First it can be a bit noisy while making ice. Nothing horrible but definitely louder than I thought it would be. Second is the hose from the side tank to the machine. Its a way too short to be able to put the tank on the right side (when looking at the front) and almost too short for it to be on the left side, and still away from the side vents. Take it from me, you have to keep those vents clear or it makes some really awful noises, and won't make ice at all because it gets too hot. The hose also feels like it wants to slide off the side tank nozzle a little too easily. It came off once making a big mess with the water that leaked so just keep an eye on it. I'll probably get a small clamp to attach it for my own peace of mind.
Overall Im happy with the purchase and would definitely recommend it.
