Fantastic Replica with Great Functionality

Throughout my childhood, I was lucky to be spoiled with many different Lego sets, most of which were Lego Star Wars.
As most people tend to do, I drifted away from Lego and other childhood interests as I grew older.
Only in the last few years, around the time of the pandemic, did I return to Lego, this time in the form of UCS Star Wars sets and other builds marketed more towards adults.
When Dune Part Two released recently in theaters, I absolutely adored the film and was blown away by what I saw. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Lego had already released an Ornithopter set one month prior! I had no idea.
I watched some videos and read reviews before actually ordering the set, as $175 is not a small amount of money these days.
The reviews, as positive as they were, still did not do this set justice. The quality of this build is outstanding. I’ve never held a set that feels so solid. I feel as if I dropped this set on the floor, only the cockpit pieces would break off. It’s that’s solid of a build.
Every single bit of space is utilized to perfection. I know some folks aren’t big fans of Lego technic, but for me, it just added to the challenge and the fun of building.
The fact that you can open and close the massive wings, flap them, and open and close two sets of landing gear at the same time is amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever had a set with such seamless and smooth features before.
Overall, the Lego Ornithopter delivers a scale model that stays true to the aesthetic of Dune, with a fantastic lineup of mini figures. The playability and design is near perfect.
Any small discrepancies or visible technic is not an issue for me, as the abundant pros far outweigh the scarce cons.
There is no doubt you are getting what you pay for. It’s absolutely worth the price.
The set looks fantastic on display, and I hope Lego continues to create Dune inspired sets in the future.

A great build. Every step of the way I was delighted by the commitment to functionality and the overall look of the 'thopter. The mechanisms seem to be as resilient as they are intricate. A+ design

Gorgeous but flawed

I love the design of this model. It looks great with tons of playability. However, as clever as the Technic mechanisms are, I was disappointed with the flapping. I had to rebuild a couple of times to make sure I got it right and never could get it to flap much. Plus the useless bay door that stays open when the landing gear is down was something I would never have been okay with as a designer.

Awesome, nearly perfect

The build experience and the display aesthetic make this a must have for me. Only a few things are worth mentioning. First, there is a 2x3 plate (installed in step 15) that falls out when using the wings flapping lever. Second, the linkage for the wings folding mechanism (installed in step 155) can become dislodged requiring disassembly to reconnect, and the wings folding lever itself will not stay locked in the folded position. Third, when folding the wings, the wings will hit each other and require manual adjustment to allow them to fold completely. Aside from these three things it is a great looking set, and currently has a place front and center in my living room!

Surprising!

Very fun build! Extremely satisfying when all the linkages are connected. Looks beautiful and fairly durable for some light playtime. Looks and responds just like the film. I did not think I would enjoy this set as much as I do. Top notch! Good job, LEGO.

Dune! Wow! I ordered this set as soon as I saw it, because I really love Frank Herbert's books. This set is a real gift. Great and fun build. Everything was simple and clear. Once assembled, the ornithopter looks great! His huge wings are simply a miracle! Thank you Lego for this set!

Felt the Sand

I wanted it, I watched Dune part II, and then I needed it. I haven't felt this way about buying a piece since my first star wars sets. This says a lot about how the movie captured me but also how much respect the set seemed to display onto said movie. Felt like I was enticed into the story and how the universe works. Making want the set more and more I finally pulled the trigger. The build was great, the features making work to the technical behemoth that is the ornithopter. 10/10 definitely see this as a MUST.

Excellent set! I've been a big LEGO fan for a long time but been unable to participate, so getting a DUNE LEGO set was awesome!
The build is a tad confusing in a couple parts, but easily improvised upon.
I would recommend this to a friend!
