Very nice radio. Lightweight and very powerful. Not as loud as I would like for it to be, but overall great. I like the GXT1000 radios better, but these are a close second.
I've been testing this little radio in an urban setting and have been able to communicate at 1 mile clearly between two units on the ground with houses everywhere around me. They are cool little radios. They feel tough and rugged. To get the full functionality you need the programming cable to make adjustments to settings and buttons and of course change frequencies to match other radios. Lots of settings to enable or disable like roger beep, emergency button, scan, squelch, etc. When you change the channel it says the channel name out loud over the speaker. It also tells you (out loud) when the batteries are low.
These are business radios but I've taken them on a few hikes with friends. I'm getting way over a mile in the forest clearly. I'm sure you could easily go to 2 miles without hills in between. Longer with zero obstructions. This is a 5 watt radio.
Only one suggestion to Midland. Make this radio in a GMRS/FRS version so the outdoor guys can buy a full 5 watt radio for play too! Not just for work.
The MB400 Midland radio is a great upgrade from the BR200. Our inspection company plans on buying a few more. The radio feels like it will stand up two years of abuse! Quit spending too much money on other brands because Midland has you covered!
