[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] If you connect to devices other than an iphone, you get a loud brain melting bluetooth sound that is probably legit causing brain damage. All bluetooth headphones do this to a degree, but for the pricej point I wish they fixed that here.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bout these about a week ago and have been hooked for the sound quality and noise cancellation but have had to face connectivity problems especially when streaming on browsers and I’m seriously missing the skip back shortcut (can only keep one shortcut) and the ability to switch them on/off without the case.

Truly changed the way I sleep

I honestly thought these were going to be a gimmick, short story, they’re not. I’ve slept with a mix of every ear plug possible and a noise machine from my phone for years, and still outside noise, morning birds, garbage trucks, neighbors, you name it, seeped into my ear canals. With these, no more. All of those noisy sounds stay masked with my Sleepbuds in. What’s best, is that my main problem is staying asleep, these help, but not 100%, that’s on me. But if I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, the silence and the tranquil sounds come with you, so it delivers a superb, consistent experience maintaining the perceptions that you’re still very close to bed and therefore sleep. I’m able to actively fall asleep much better now because of this whereas I used to wake up more and have trouble falling back asleep.
Regarding comfort, they’re as comfortable and slimline as possibly can be. No more different than an earplug. I actually find earplugs extremely painful in the ear canal from the pressure and a lot more itchy, requiring me to take the earplugs out more to satisfy that itch in the middle of the night which is not great. With Sleepbuds, they’re softer and far less uncomfortable. Sometimes they itch, but definitely not as much. People have claimed that on the ear outside they can hurt, I can see what they’re saying, but of course no ear is created equal, so this doesn’t affect me too much.
Local sound saving versus streamed from phone, and only being able to save 10 songs. Not sure why people are so buggered about this one. The local sound save is great because you can leave your phone and there’s no interruption - this is obviously crucial for the people trying to focus or stay asleep when distracted by checking on kids or going to the bathroom. Yes, checking in the the Bose app is kind of annoying for the price tag, but no different than me putting on my sound machine every night from a different app. The 10 songs thing, like cmon. You’ll never need to listen to more than 10, I stick to white noisy sounds, rain patter, and the tranquil sounds are phenomenal - I use them for anxious sleeps and they work brilliantly.
The streaming music and podcasts… guys, this isn’t that kind of product. These tiny gizmos only have so much battery to keep the physical size impressively small. Any larger, your ears will hurt.
Noise masking vs noise cancelling. Yes there’s a legitimate difference. My Bose 700’s are amazing, before my Sleepbuds I used those to nap on my couch. But of course being a side sleeper, cans on your ears in bed is a no go. Noise masking does NOT cancel sound. Between the plug and the sounds it plays you can adjust the volume based on the noise from outside and it’ll incorporate, mask the noise into the sound that’s playing. It works rather impressively. Finding the right volume is probably the hardest because you underestimate how quiet it is and then fall asleep and the plugs are too loud and then you have to adjust. That said, Bose it would be nice for you to incorporate a volume slider onto your app because as others has stated opening your phone at 3am to go into the app isn’t great. Feature request?
The charging is ok. They really should have a fast charge built into the hockey puck device, so they take a while to charge. But do give you 5 or 6 10 hour charges which is almost a week of sleep without needing a full charge. And if you decide to keep it plugged in all the time bedside, then you’ll have no worry.
Outside of that, beautiful design, the hockey puck charger is from outer space cool. And the buds are light, slim lined, and super soft. Just don’t forget to take them off before the shower, I’ve almost made this mistake several times. Goes to show they become quite phantom once you get used to them and forget they’re there.
5/5 apart from some small gripes but not a game changer. I’ll be sticking with this product for years to come and excited to see what they’ll upgrade as chip sizes and battery requirements advance.
