Like most HP printers nowadays...

pretty much junk. Uses a ton of ink, even though it is connected to my desktop via a USB it takes forever to start printing (like 2-3min, no exaggeration). It won't hold my "draft" quality setting so it resets itself to "normal" after every use. I had to uninstall and reinstall the software 2 times because it became unresponsive. Like I said, junk. Won't make the HP mistake again, even if they're giving them away.

Hello,
I'm very sorry that this is happening to you. However, there are some resources that can help you.
If you are using the draft mode and black and white settings to save ink and are still using a lot, maybe you would like Instant Ink. Many customers love the plans that are available and you can save money on ink: hpinstantink.com
Slow printing and some other problems can often be fixed by updating the firmware to get the latest improvements. That can be done online at: support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/8289585/model/11161264
For any other concerns, you can always contact HP Support at: hp.com/contacthp

HMMMM Who buys this?

I bought this today. I went to set it up on our home network. There is one PC and two laptops. OH! did I say we are retired? Setting up was DIFFERENT on all three devices... that is, NOT CONSISTENT. I ask you, How many retired folks can locate the IP address of a printer? HP asked exactly that question. Setting up the printer was a labyrinth of techy questions and misdirection. HP has much to gain by making the setup question transparent to the purchaser. i.e. the computer goes to the internet... HP identifies the printer... HP directs the website to install the printer... the user can print his documents u.s.w. Your behavior towards the user is unacceptable. YOU can do it. You CAN BE the printer of choice for the Joe-Average-User. CHALLENGE YOUR DESIGN TEAM.

Hi,
I am very sorry for the time it took to set up your printer. This is not the customer experience that we wish.
Yes, it should be a lot easier to set up the printer, but sometimes it is a matter of compatibility problems with various operating systems, languages, internet providers, different brands of routers and other things that are beyond our control.
Some users do not want to have the company control the setup due to trust issues, so on and so forth.
If there is anything else that we can help with, please contact us: hp.com/contactHP
I've had the printer two weeks and can't get it to work right wirelessly. I hard wired it to my computer, and I'm still having issues getting it to consistently print. I've always bought HP, and I've always loved HP. I figure it must be me, so when I have time, I meddle with it. In theory, it's an amazing printer. Can't wait until it works correctly?
This is my second 6978. The first was working perfectly for 14 months then it stopped accepting paper. I was on auto updates and instant ink. I believe HP did an update that changed my settings and forced me to buy a new printer. What a waste of money and for our landfill! I no longer have auto updates turned on and did not enroll in instant ink with this new one. Hopefully this printer will last longer. If not, I will NEVER buy HP again after being a loyal customer for over 25 years.
Cons: Smoother Mouse Pad
Pros: Lightweight

I'd give it a 3.5 if half stars were an option.

This printer is better than those in the new Envy series that HP is now selling, but not as good as the 6410 (or 6420?) deskjet that I had for almost ten years! What a wonderful workhorse that was! It is faster, but the print and scan quality is not as good, and it seems to need to refresh itself often. I can't just walk in after not using it for a couple days and print something. It takes a few minutes to go through the cycle. But I needed something that would fit in my compact workspace, so I didn't choose the 8700 Pro series, which I think are fine machines. This meets my needs for a small home office with a full range of features and functions. I haven't used the new ink cartridges, so I can't review those at this time.
