Great Cordless Vac

I’ve had the vacuum about two weeks and love it. I was skeptical that it would work well on hardwood, but it does a great job. Nice to have a rotating head to tidy up the area rugs along the way. It has also replaced a noisy dusty old corded handheld that I’ve used on stairs for years. Highly recommended.

If you are wondering whether to get the V6 or the V8, read this review.
Pardon the novel, but I am going to give an honest review of my experiences with my new beast, the Dyson V8 Absolute, and my dad's - a V6 Absolute.
I did my due diligence about which one I wanted to claim as my own.
Here is a rundown of my findings - read on for more info.
Both of these vacuums will get the job done, conveniently. If you are wondering if the cost is worth it, it absolutely was to me. Both the V6 and V8 Absolute's were listed for a very similar price when I was looking, so I did some research and used my dad's V6 a few times for reference.
V6 Absolute:
I was impressed with the suction for the size of the vacuum, and loved the cordless aspect. It sucked everything up equal to my corded stand-up clunker, if not better. I found that the battery life wasn't an issue unless the entire 3 floors of my dad's house needed done, or when using the brush rollers for an extended period, or on Max mode. Waiting for a charge was rough, but it was nice to have a break. The canister size was small, but I was able to empty it once per floor (my dad has no pets). Long hair did tend to get stuck in the canister and I had to pull it out. I found the vacuum much quieter than my clunky corded one, but you could hear it running through a door. All in all, I was impressed: 8.5/10.
V8 Absolute:
I decided to get the V8 based on the upgrades: it was quieter than the V6, had a little bit larger canister with a new feature that reduced hair getting stuck, and had a longer battery life. Where the V6 impressed, the V8 awed. I will go into detail below, but I am happy at my choice of the V8: 9.5/10.
I bought the V8 Absolute a few weeks ago, and have used it every day, no joke. While my old clunky guy worked alright, I hated getting it out and lugging it around the house, only managing to do so once a week, if that. My small cordless handheld always lost power and suction (you could hear it dying – WOOOOoooo…) after just getting the pet hair off my couch!
It is so, SO much easier to keep up on cleaning the floors with this cordless beast.
It is almost *fun* to vacuum.
I have a 1300 sqft main floor (and two shedding dogs!) and yesterday I was able to vacuum all of the carpet, wood, and rugs, dust the baseboards, and even get the pet hair off my huge sectional couch on a single charge (there was one light of charge left when I finished and plugged it in). Best part, there was no audible WOOOOoooo, no loss in suction. Beautiful. The attachments are also beyond easy to change.
Speaking of the couch, this baby fits right under mine (3" clearance), all the way to the wall with ease.
My favorite part of my V8 is the convenience. And powerful suction. It is cordless with long battery life. It is also SUPER quiet, even compared to my dad's V6. Oh, and did I mention ease of use?
I see dust/dog hair, I just pull it from the mount and debris is gone in no time. I put up a frosted Christmas tree this year (never again, there is snow everywhere and it is MADDENING!) and my Dyson sucks up the fake snow swiftly and completely.
My old vacuum used to smell like dog hair whenever I vacuumed it up, but my V8 doesn't put out any smell. The filter works great.
The only downsides I have found with this baby are that the mount only holds 2 extra attachments (darn-it), and the size of the canister. One of my dogs is a German shepherd, golden retriever, yellow-lab mix and she sheds *horrendously* - her hair fills the canister up on a room-by-room basis, so I find myself emptying it very often. However, it is SO stinking easy to empty that it is barely a hassle. I have started carrying a small trash/grocery bag room to room and dumping it as I go. The stray hair does get stuck here and there, which I then have to fish out, but it is nowhere near the frequency my dad’s V6 did. Convenient.
The canister doesn't fill up as quickly if you don't have a massive amount of pet hair, which I found by dropping uncooked rice on a freshly vacuumed floor.
My dad’s V6 was already an improvement on my large stand-up vacuum, but where the V6 impressed, the V8 awed. It is SO QUIET!! Seriously, I vacuumed the hallway and my roommate didn’t wake up, separated only by a door. If you have the brush roll attachments on it, they do make more noise, but it is seriously SO quiet.
Vacuuming more often is so much easier - instead of spending hours vacuuming the entire house once a week, lugging around a heavy stand-up, I am spending minutes on a room a day or when I see a problem area. I remember putting off vacuuming with my old big mama - even when I saw pet hair - because I didn’t want to get her out. The V8 is just so easy, it takes minutes.
Another huge reason I love my new V8 is how easy it is to clear hair out of the bristles. I remember flipping my old vacuum over and spending 30+ minutes going at it with scissors. With the V8, it is so easy to remove - yes remove - the entire rod and even the long hair comes off with little hassle. It goes back together just as easy and is practically as good as new!
If you are trying to decide between the V6 and V8, weigh the pros and cons. My dad has a huge house and loves his, but he has no pets. I have a smaller house, 4 people and 2 pets and opted to spend a little more for the upgraded V8. I would have been happy with the V6, but am glad I chose the model with quieter operation, longer battery life, larger canister, and the easy-empty feature.

It works fine on wood floors but not at all on rugs or carpet. Miss our older model. Also was told that the parts on the V8 were interchangeable (by Dyson) to our 59, they are not!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hi there, this is Kelly with Dyson. Thanks for taking the time to share your review with us. We were able to see from your account that you own the Dyson V8™ Fluffy. This model will only include the soft roller cleaner head, which was engineered for use on bare or hard floors. This tool is not intended for use on carpeting. If you do have carpeting in the home, you may wish to consider investing in the direct drive cleaner head, which features a spinning brush bar and is intended for use on carpets and area rugs.
If we can assist with any further questions or concerns you may have, don't hesitate to get in touch with us at askdysonUS@dyson.com.
Best wishes, Kelly Dyson Customer Support

I don't know how we managed without it

We bought this a few weeks ago and have used it almost every day. We've never had such web-free ceiling corners and light fixtures, and it's a breeze cleaning around our 2 parrot cages every morning.
It's much quieter than I expected in normal suction mode, which is a plus as the parrots can be started by loud noises.
I never thought I'd like a vacuum cleaner as much as the Dyson Animal we bought almost a decade ago (it still works perfectly, we just wanted something lighter for smaller cleanups), but this V8 Absolute might replace the old work-horse in my affections.

Love that it is cordless!

The cordless feature changed my life. I can vacuum the whole condo and not have to keep finding a new plug. Another great thing is that it works on hardwood and carpet. I had been using two different vacuums previously. It has alot of power. I have a dog with long hair and it picks up just about everything. It's very easy to clean. My only issue with it is that you have to keep pressing the button to use it which is fine. However, the grip rubs on the side of the thumb and forefinger which isn't pleasant. Overall, it is a great vacuum and I highly recommend.
