Out of the box, our cordless machines are set to the max mode. In max mode, the V8 lasts up to 7 continuous minutes and is meant to be used for particularly stubborn messes, as the standard mode (up to 40 minutes of run time) is ideal for majority of messes.

Why did I wait so long???

I've had my eye on the Dyson stick vacuum for awhile, but couldn't justify buying another Dyson when my current one still works. BUT I went ahead and purchased this one about 3 weeks ago. We have a golden retriever who sheds constantly, and I have been ecstatic at the convenience of taking the vacuum out of its charger, vacuuming the family room for 5-10 minutes, and putting it back in. No cords, picks up GREAT, gets in areas my large Dyson doesn't, and it's lightweight. I highly recommend.

Okay if you don’t have animal hair

From day one this poor performer has become clogged with dog hair multiple times while doing just the small ~70 sqft area. I can only make a few passes before it is clogged, well before the storage bucket is full. Cannot use MAX mode on carpet. Cannot use MAX mode with several attachments, especially the one for crevices. Doesn’t have enough battery life to complete the whole house. If you want to just do a kick hard floor vacuum, then this is a great tool, otherwise I do not recommend. Additionally, Dyson support sent me a multiple paragraph email with troubleshooting tips despite me saying I know how to declog and clean the filters they continue to try to avoid honoring the warranty, maybe because they know it’s not defective it’s just not a good vacuum.
(Not sure if the same vacuum, but mine is the V8 Animal plus)
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

It's very unusual to hear how frequently your V8 is clogging in your everyday use. Dyson V8 Animal cordless is a hassle-free vacuum with powerful suction. The powerful direct-drive cleanerhead removes ground-in dirt and pet hair from carpets, and self-adjusts to pick up dirt and debris from your bare floors.
With regard to the run time and battery life, Dyson V8 Animal also features two suction modes; MAX and standard. Please keep in mind that the V8 offers plenty of suction on normal power to effectively clean your floors because of the motorized brush bar. MAX power is really only needed for tough cleaning jobs. Also, while many do use Dyson cordless machines as their main vacuum at home, if you prefer a longer run time, we’d recommend one of our compact uprights or canister models. Regular suction mode will provide up to 40 minutes of run time, which is dependent on whether you're using a motorized tool.

This was a surprise and a gift that I did not expect. I had looked at these previously but hadn't considered purchasing one since my trusty old vacuum still works. Have only used it a few times so far but am so very impressed. It is very easy to use and am very impressed with the dirt it sucks up! Never knew my house was so dirty (though honestly I haven't really checked the bags in my other machine so don't have a fair comparison!). I absolutely love that it is cordless and maybe it helps me to "want to vacuum more!" It is so versatile. An added advantage, is that my dog doesn't follow me all over the house barking and trying to "eat" this vacuum! This also makes vacuuming much more pleasant.
So far I am very pleased!

Really powerful!

Even though I have only owned this machine 1 week, I have done everything with it and used all the tools it comes with. The suction on high mode actually lifts my very heavy rug. needless to say I don't use the most powerful suction to do my vacuuming. That does not mean it doesn't pickup even ground in dirt because it does. The bin holds a lot of hair and dirt. I didn't have to stop half way through cleaning to empty the bin. I vacuumed the rug two days in a row and it kept sucking up more fine particle dirt then I thought possible. This vacuum is lightweight enough to vacuum the cobwebs on the ceilings and in corners. I have had three dogs in the house for a month before I received this vacuum and now my rug, which is at least 5 years old looks brand new. I have no doubt that this is my go to vacuum for even the biggest jobs.

Just got his on Saturday. Bought the V-8 thinking it would have more power than my V6, but it does not sound as powerful I hope the sound level is just a reflection of newer technology.
