Love this kettle! This is the second one we’ve owned. Bought one for our vacation home and enjoyed using it so much we bought it for the main space as well. Heats up quickly, pours beautifully.
I really want to give this kettle a 5 star rating. It heats up very, very quickly. The temp setting dial and push functions are intuitive and the design of the kettle is pretty sleek. That said, I have had 2 issues arise in the month I have owned this kettle. The first is that the kettles heating element (not the vents on the lid) has begun to make a very loud, low-pitched whine when heating up. It didn't make that noise when we first received it and it begins almost immediately, well before the water begins to boil, when we turn the kettle on. The second, and most alarming is that there a been a couple times when the kettle will keep powering the heating element even when it is on the "off" setting (no light). The kettle will continue to power the heating element with or without water at what seems to be max power, it's impossible to tell because the kettle base is "off" but the water boils over continuously unless I physically unplug the kettle. If I plug it back in and it is still in the "off" setting (no dial light) sometimes the kettle will begin to boil water again with no way to stop it other than unplugging it. Pretty bummed as this is a very nice kettle but not worth keeping due to the fact it is a real fire hazard.
I have had this kettle for two years and have really liked it. This weekend, however, the handle fell off when I picked it up off the base to pour hot water for tea. I was holding my 6 month old daughter in my other arm when an entire liter of boiling water drenched my right side. I have second degree burns on my arm and leg. (Amazingly and thankfully, none of the water touched my daughter!) When I inspected the kettle, was I shocked to see that the handle isn't even screwed in place, it's secured with two grommets and glue. This seems INCREDIBLY unsafe. In the end, I feel lucky that I "only" have a few second degree burns and nothing worse!
There are things I really like about this kettle, but I would be very reluctant to buy again given this experience!
I have this kettle. This morning, I was holding my six-month old and picked up the kettle with the other hand to pour water for coffee when the handle broke. Boiling water spilled all over my right side. Somehow none of it touched my baby, and miraculously I did not drop her. I have second degree bruns in my arm. Some might say that it’s not safe to hold your baby while you pour hot water - whether or not this is true, it’s certainly not safe for a handle to fall off of a hot water kettle!
We have really liked this kettle for the two years that we’ve had it, but I am reluctant to replace it with another OXO kettle after this experience.
