Takes some getting used to

First off it really has good suction. The wand and hose are very awkward to use and getting it back in place is not any easier. The last time I used it I had my wife figure it out.
It doesn't have a very wide swath and it doesn't seem to fluff my carpet like my old machine.
It does seem to work well for long hair with no wrapping.
Overall not a bad unit, price is a bit high.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

VACUUMS VERY GOOD

As a vacuum cleans very good; however is very hard to push. This is our third Dyson vacuum and while it cleans the best is very hard to push and maneuver. My wife (who is 83) does not like it and wants to go back to our last one; which we still have

Hey there, this is Kelly with Dyson. Thank you for your review. Your new Ball Animal 3 Extra features an Anti-tangle Motorbar™ cleaner head, with suction control. This will allow you to move that slider on the front of the head, to adjust suction depending on which floor type you're cleaning. If the machine is hard to push, adjusting that slider will typically resolve the issue. If you're still having trouble, you may wish to contact your carpeting manufacturer, as they will generally have some guidelines for cleaning their floor coverings, in terms of best suction, power and even using a spinning brush bar on their floor fibers.

Love my Dyson Animal 3!!

My first Dyson Animal is an original more than 14 years old. I bought the Animal 3 to replace it after it finally started over heating. I would never buy any other brand vacuum. The Animal 3 has very powerful suction. Love this vacuum on hardwood floors and for pet hair. It doesn't blow the hair everywhere, but sucks it right to the vacuum. The pet attachment is great on the dog. Easy bin removal, and great for dusting the house. The adjustable settings are great for different flooring. The only reason a four star rating, it's hard to vacuum throw rugs even on the highest setting without the beaterbar rotating. Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the same vacuum again! Thank you Dyson!!!

So, the previous model I had had a 14 inch head. Now it is less then 12 inches, which makes it harder to turn, and covers less on each pass. Really a poor decision of them to make this change.

Just got my Animal 3 after my DC41 broke after 10 years. I had issues with shipping since it took over a week. Definitely didn't get 2 day shipping but it was Thanksgiving week so I'll chalk it up to that. The performance is great. A lot more suction than my DC41 which performed great. May be too much of a good thing. The suction makes it a workout to use on carpet. It may get better after using it a while. Using it on hardwood floors is great and I like being able to turn off the beater bar.
Luckily my tools from my DC41 fit the Animal 3. Using it on small rugs is impossible due to the powerful suction. Even with the beater bar off it will suck the rugs up off the floor. I've found a way around that even though it's an extra step. Use the turbine tool on the end of the wand on the rugs. It works great. The head is smaller than my DC41 but I don't see that as a negative.
Now the bad: using it on carpet is a workout. The powerful suction is a double edged sword here. It might get better after using it a while. My DC41 broke at the lower hose assembly point which is made of cheap plastic. Sadly the new Animal 3 has the same assembly and it's still made of plastic. It will break after 5 years. I think it is a little bit heavier than my DC41.

Great picking up dog hair but...

I had a Dyson for about 15 yrs. Took it for routine maintenance once. Occasionally a string would get wrapped around the bar and I would have to take it apart, not a big deal. I've had 3 dogs while owning this vacuum, the most recent was a husky we had for 7 years. It worked great. A month ago my son moved out and took his husky with him. I decided he would need a good vacuum and knew he couldn't afford a dyson on his own so I gave him mine. Still works great and have the needed attachments. He was thrilled as his girlfriends vacuum died. I researched several before I decided on another Dyson. This is great at picking up hair and whatever else it finds but it's made much cheaper, doesnt move as smooth as my old standard one and the tubing for the handheld is shorter. I used to be able to reach the ceiling easily. I struggle now. I think the warranty is only 3yrs now too. Was 5. I considered trading back with my son but I'm gonna be paying it off for a few more months. That being said, I like the function, wish the form and price were better.

They all go through a very rigorous testing phase to ensure they can withstand much more than your average bump and drop.
The max reach is a little over 15 feet for the Ball Animal 3, and out the box, the hose may be more stiff since it's new. However, it will become much more flexible over time. In the meantime, we recommend pulling the wand/hose all the way out before using it to utilize the reach.

I like the ball animal 2 version much better

I had a ball animal 2 for about 10 years, and I absolutely loved it! It needed repairs, and we were moving, so I thought I’d just replace it instead of moving it. I wish I would have taken my old one with me! The 3 is fine, but I’m not happy that you have to pay extra for the “pet hair tool” that came with the previous version (that I didn’t keep not thinking I’d have to pay extra for it with the new one). I don’t like the vents at the top of the hose, when it’s on and in the standing position it’s really loud to hear the suction. Plus, if you don’t shut it off before standing it up, your arm will get slightly suctioned to it. Just a terrible design feature. The wand is much more cumbersome to get in/out, on the 2 it was so smooth and effortless. I’ve had it just over a week now, I’m contemplating returning it and just trying a different brand. For the amount I paid, I expected to be just as happy as I was with the previous version.
