I bought this vacuum a few months ago. I'm young and this is the first vacuum I've ever owned. I did a lot of research and I liked the idea of buying the complete package to pair with my 1 year old Australian shepherd. Let me say... I DO feel like the vacuum is powerful and is able to clean up any reasonable amount of dirt. The suction is powerful (can be difficult to maneuver--sometimes I feel like I'm going to break the handle (re: cheap plastic).
My biggest complaint and the catalyst for such a low rating is the functionality. ANY time you want to use an attachment, it is so awkward. Unless you vacuum from a supine position on the floor, the hose kinks and you lose suction. You have to hold the hose in an awkward configuration to prevent this, which makes vacuuming ANYTHING that isn't the floor a terrible experience. Because of this, all of the attachments are too much of a pain to even use and therefore just sit in the closet. I'm most likely going to sell the vacuum and look into canisters. Unfortunately, I'm rather disappointed in this product.

Hello Matthew, this is Kelly with Dyson. Thank you for taking the time to share your review and experience with us. We're happy to hear that you've found the Ball Animal 3 to be so powerful, and to pick up well after your dog. With regard to using your hose with or without the wand, the hose can be tricky, especially brand new. It's going to be very stiff and not very flexible. I've found in my own use, the more I use and stretch the hose on my upright, the more pliable it become over time. You can detach the hose from the machine, and fully stretch it out - leaving it stretched for a period of time, to see if that helps the process in getting that to be more useful for you. As always, if your machine was purchased directly from Dyson in the last 30 days, we do offer free returns if you're truly unhappy. Feel free to contact us directly at askdysonUS@dyson.com.
My last vacuum was 15yrs old and falling apart. I was hesitant about spending a lot on a new vacuum but after the reviews and other family members who owned a Dyson for years, I decided to get this during the sale. This vacuum sucked up so much dirt/dust/hair in one clean sweep in the entire house. I couldn’t believe how dirty my carpet/area rugs and hardwood floors were! The hose extension is stiff, but with time it’ll loosen up. I’ve even cleaned my sofa with the attachments and works awesome! I’m hoping this will help with my hubbys allergies knowing this vacuum throughly cleans!
I have an older Dyson Canister that is still working (and working pretty well), but I wanted to add an upright to my cleaning arsenal. As for the cleaning that this one does - WOW. Other users have noted that it takes some "pushing" - and that's accurate. But I'll take that as a trade-off for the extra dirt it collects, and boy does it. Now, the bad: 1) No onboard storage . . . not even for your favorite one or two tools (and the bag is mediocre, too (no way to close it)). The cord is a wrap up? Ok . . . I mean, I guess. But here's the kicker - IF YOU WANT TO USE THE HOSE, YOU HAVE TO COMPLETELY UNWRAP THE CORD! It's an absurd design choice. I'm on the fence at this point. For the amount I paid (even during the Holiday sales), it really shouldn't be so clunky to use. It's very "un-Dyson" in this way.

Hello,
Thank you for your review. This is Miella from Dyson. We're glad you've enjoyed the suction power of your Ball Animal 3 Complete corded machine. The Ball Animal 3 is designed to provide a strong, fade-free suction, and requires easy maintenance to ensure the most optimal performance. It also features the Motorbar cleanerhead, with a de-tangling feature to ensure any hair goes right to the bin.
The Ball Animal 3 has onboard storage for the basic tools that come with any upright machine: the combination tool and stair tool. The other tools depend on the variation purchased (yours is the Complete variation) and the tool bag is designed to keep them handy!

Just got my Animal 3 after my DC41 broke after 10 years. I had issues with shipping since it took over a week. Definitely didn't get 2 day shipping but it was Thanksgiving week so I'll chalk it up to that. The performance is great. A lot more suction than my DC41 which performed great. May be too much of a good thing. The suction makes it a workout to use on carpet. It may get better after using it a while. Using it on hardwood floors is great and I like being able to turn off the beater bar.
Luckily my tools from my DC41 fit the Animal 3. Using it on small rugs is impossible due to the powerful suction. Even with the beater bar off it will suck the rugs up off the floor. I've found a way around that even though it's an extra step. Use the turbine tool on the end of the wand on the rugs. It works great. The head is smaller than my DC41 but I don't see that as a negative.
Now the bad: using it on carpet is a workout. The powerful suction is a double edged sword here. It might get better after using it a while. My DC41 broke at the lower hose assembly point which is made of cheap plastic. Sadly the new Animal 3 has the same assembly and it's still made of plastic. It will break after 5 years. I think it is a little bit heavier than my DC41.
My old dyson animal died after 11 years of service. I bought this one because purple is out of stock. This is one is extremely difficult to push. I also own a cannister. The accessories are NOT interchangable. very disappointed because I loved my old dyslon

Hi there, this is Kelly with Dyson. Thank you for your review. We're sorry to learn that you've found the Ball Animal 3 hard to push. Your machine features an Anti-tangle Motorbar™ cleaner head, with suction control. The three levels of suction are controlled by the slider on the front of the cleaner head. Slide the suction control to suit the floor type. If you are having trouble pushing your machine, try the suction mode on the left. Depending on which older model Dyson you own, some of the tools or attachments may not be compatible. We'd be happy to help answer any other questions or concerns you have on using your machine. Feel free to get in touch with us at askdysonUS@dyson.com.
As other reviews note, this machine is very heavy and a little clunky. That was surprising to me as I always thought these machines moved with ease. There was a learning curve to using it and has a lot of attachments to figure out what works best & where. I will say we have 5 pets and the suction is great-It is also nice that machine easily comes apart to clean.
Vacuum pushes debris and does not pick it up. This includes a little popcorn kernel. It does not pick up plastic wrappers. Actually sectioned one to the shield for the rollers. Did well with dust and fur in the carpet. I didn't find it hard to push. If you have any debris that you wish to pick up, this is NOT your vacuum

Hello,
Thank you for your review. This is Miella from Dyson. We're sorry for the frustration with your Ball Animal 3 machine. The Ball Animal 3 features a self-adjusting cleanerhead, and it adjusts itself to the height of the flooring. Dyson manufacture vacuum cleaners are suitable for most flooring types. However, we are unable to test our machines on every flooring permutation. Therefore, we always recommend that you contact your carpet retailer/manufacturer before using your new Dyson or any other vacuum cleaner.

I had high expectations when I bought this vacuum, for well thought out compromises and clever design. Some features are well done like the ball that turns the vacuum by twisting the handle (took me a while to figure that out) and the easy to empty debris container. But some features are not good compromises. One is the self storing hose. While this works well to store the hose, it is like fighting an elephant to use it. It constantly wants to collapse to the storage petition while using it, causing the vacuum to move toward you and the hose to kink near the wand. This is unlikely to improve with time because it is partially caused by the strong vacuum and negative pressure in the hose. The strong vacuum also makes it very difficult to vacuum an area rug. When you get to the edge of the rug and try to reverse direction, the vacuum sucks the rug up and jams the rug beater. You have to shut the vac off to detatch it. To avoid this you have to vacuum one direction and then lift the vac off the floor and put it back in the middle of the rug for each pass. I would prefer a non-collapsible hose that I don't have to fight. It might make sense to offer that as an accessory. The beater bar head is too high (and not wide enough) to get under many objects when used on a hardwood floor. Perhaps an accessory without a beater bar that has a low profile (and wider) that can be mounted in place of the beater?

Hi Dave, this is Kelly with Dyson. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and feedback. We love to hear and learn from our owners. With regard to the hose on your Ball Animal 3, our hoses are generally pretty stiff right out of the box. They will loosen up over time, eventually becoming more flexible or pliable. You can fully outstretch the hose and leave it stretched like that over night - this can help it to relax some and become a bit easier to use.
You might find that when you are vacuuming surfaces such as area rugs or mats, that are not fixed down to the flooring underneath, that it's hard to do so, due to the powerful suction this unit provides. The cleaner head will form a tight seal to the flooring underneath. You may find that by adjusting the slider to the left on the front of the cleaner head will result in an easier maneuverability on those surfaces. If you have any other questions/concerns, please get in touch with us directly at askdysonUS@dyson.com.
