Not an Animal, a Beast!

We purchased this for our new home as our previous Dyson was getting on in years. This may be called Ball Animal because it handles like a beast! I just worked up a complete sweat just trying to vacuum a large area, mostly tiled, but some medium pile carpet. Trying to push it over the carpet on any setting is next to impossible, slightly easier when pulling it. The video on this page of the guy effortlessly gliding over a carpet is totally laughable. On the tiled areas it does a very good job of cleaning, but, again is a beast to handle. It just doesn't seem to respond to my attempts to guide it. It is nothing like our previous DC39.

The good, the bad, and the questionable.

Our last vacuum was a DC-07. Used it for 18 years. It was a great vacuum overall, and would still be going strong today, but my wife needs something easier to handle due to her bad back. She narrowed her choices down to two vacuums: the Ball Animal 3, and a competitor's. Obviously, given our positive experience with the DC-07, we went with the Dyson, and also because the competitor's model still uses bags (seriously?) which we didn't want to deal with.
In terms of engineering, the Ball Animal 3 is impressive. The suction is incredibly powerful. In fact, it's so powerful that in some cases--like bathroom rugs, hallway runners, etc--it's actually a detriment because the rug buckles as you're pulling the vacuum back. My wife likes the head design; it's lower to the ground so it can get into tighter spaces under chairs, etc. I also like that you can see the brush bar while operating the vacuum, so you know whether it's spinning or needs to be cleaned. So as far as engineering and technology are concerned, the Ball Animal 3 is fantastic.
The vacuum's Achille's heal, however, is its ergonomics. This is not an easy vacuum to use, and requires a fair amount of strength to push around. I'm 6'3" 250+ lbs, and by the time I'm finished vacuuming with the Ball Animal 3, my shoulder feels like it's going to fall off, and my back hurts for about a half hour afterwards, from the coccyx up to the middle. If *I'm* this stiff, sore, sweating like a pig, and gasping for air after using the vacuum, imagine what it must be like for my poor wife and her bad back! This vacuum does not "roll" or "glide" across the carpet, and frankly I also feel it's a lot harder to maneuver. On a positive note, though, the clutch mechanism is in a much more user-friendly location now (an electronic switch next to the power button versus having to bend over and manipulate a mechanical knob); but then Dyson goes and cancels it out by putting the suction adjustment slider in an even more inconvenient location than where the DC-07 clutch knob was. My wife likes the wand on this unit better than the DC-07. I disagree, but I do like that the tools can be directly attached to the hose now. That's probably the best improvement Dyson made, ergonomically speaking. Unfortunately, the main chassis/body still "follows" you around whenever you stretch the hose, getting in the way and making the job harder. The on-board storage of the tools isn't very good, either, and seems like it was more of an afterthought. The brush bar is much easier to remove on the Ball Animal 3. It's more of a sleeve that fits over the actual rotating mechanism, so no special tool is required to disconnect the drive belt from the roller bar. Lastly, both filters on the Ball Animal 3 are washable (the post-motor filter on the DC-07 wasn't washable and had to be replaced periodically, and was difficult to access).
Now as for the construction of the Ball Animal 3, that remains in question. Some of the plastic, particularly in the handle and the flip-up wand end cap, is really flimsy and bends way too much. I feel like it's going to snap or permanently deform at any moment. However, being open-minded, perhaps the flexibiltiy helps _prevent_ the plastic from snapping. I don't know. Time will tell.
I'm torn. On the one hand, I want the Ball Animal 3 to give us 18+ years of reliable service like the DC-07 did; but on the other hand, I am not looking forward to my wife and I (especially her) having to lug this thing around while using it. We may be back in the market sooner than later.

Hi there, this is Kelly with Dyson. Thank you so much for sharing this fantastic review. We love to hear and learn from our owners; both the good and bad. We were so happy to hear many years of use you got out of your former DC07 vacuum. Those models were work horses; owners who had or still have this model, LOVE it! It really speaks to the quality of Dyson products, how long you were able to use this machine in your home.

We're sorry to know that you haven't had the same - or better - experience with your new Ball Animal 3 Extra. You did touch on the suction power in your feedback. This machine does offer 290 air watts of suction power, which is our most powerful upright to date. The Anti-tangle Motorbar cleaner head does have suction control, so you should be able to position the slider to make vacuuming things like area rugs or bath mats easier. Try moving that slider all the way to the left, and see if that helps the issue. If you are finding the machine hard to push all the time, and moving that slider doesn't seem to make things any easier, let me know!

I appreciate your comments on the location of the slider. It does require the user to bend over and reach fairly low; we appreciate hearing that. We wouldn't expect any parts to feel flimsy or like they may break, but know that if you should ever encounter anything breaking or snapping, we're always on standby to provide needed assistance. If you have any other questions or concerns that we can help you with, you can reach me directly at askdysonUS@dyson.com.

Best wishes,
Kelly

motorized floor attachment

I don't typically write reveiws but so disappointed in this vacuum. Not the quality of the older models, Hose is cheep and will mostlikely wear out at the point it bends by the hard plastic hand wand. If you use hose, machine tips overs. Hard floor motorized attachment does detangle hair but is constantly detaches from the round ball. Round ball will totally detach from floor attachement when trying to place in suction position. It also won't easily then return to the upright free standing position. The only positive so far is it does have very good suction. Had vacuum about a year. Have a 1100 sqft home and ball detaches from floor attachement 3-4 times before I get my home vacuumed.

Unbelievable suction!!

This is my second Dyson. My first is an Animal Ball 2. It is still going strong other than my hose has a tear in it. It is almost 5 years old and I use it 7 days a week! I have OCD really bad so I clean every day. If something can take the abuse I put it through it has to be good. I wanted to get the latest model so I got the Animal Ball 3. I love the new motor bar cleaner head. It works very well and is easy to adjust between my thick carpet and my tile. It is also easy to clean. There is a button on the side that allows it to swivel up to pull the beater bar cover off to clean. The head is also smaller than my 2 which allows me to get in between chairs and such that my other wouldn’t allow. I won’t ever use another vacuum again. I’ve tried two of the biggest competitors and they don’t even compare. Seems like all the negative reviews on here are people being babies. Yes, my machine will fall over sometimes when I use the hose to clean something. Big deal. Most of the time I don’t go out far enough for it to fall over. The main thing I want my machine to do is pick up the stuff on the floor and this one does it incredibly well. I cannot believe how strong the suction is. So far I am very happy with this vacuum. Also, I have read many reviews talking about how heavy this vacuum is. I can pick it up with one arm and it ain’t very heavy at all. And my shoulders are terrible. It’s actually one of the lighter ones. Much lighter than older dyson’s. I have thick high pile carpet and it goes over it easily. You have to adjust the cleaner head to the floor type you are using. I also read someone say this animal 3 doesn’t pick up as good as the animal 2. That is NOT true. If someone isn’t satisfied with this vacuum, they won’t be satisfied with any.

Cleaning power great, usability leaves sore arms

Love it to push and pull cleaning. But as soon as you are ready to get the nooks and crannies this vacuum is ready to be sent back to the warehouse. The hose is so stiff and clunky you literary strain your muscles trying to use. Anything about waist level like on top a dresser impossible to easily clean because the hose has so much tension. I’m going to give it another 3 weeks but first impression I miss my sharks easy ergonomics. I cleaned my car with the hose and it is so clunky and rigid. When I first tried using hose I was left frustrated where to lay the extendable wand/vaccums backbone. The solid bar doesn’t have a home you have to leave it on the floor or toss it onto a couch. All these fancy gadgets but the engineers can figure out where to house the vaccine backbone?!? I will have to decide if the cleaning power is worth the extra hassle. It will definitely slow you down, if you want a fast clean this isn’t for you.

Thank you for your feedback on Dyson Ball Animal 3. We appreciate you taking the time to share with us. We would expect the hose to become more flexible with time and use and recommend checking to ensure the wand is not obstructed and that the hose is not sucking into itself as the hose is not something we would expect to be an issue during use. Should you have any further questions or concerns we can help to address, don't hesitate to get in touch with us at askdysonUS@dyson.com.

Amazing vacuum!

I received the ball animal 3 today and this is an amazing vacuum. I was wary after reading some of the reviews and was afraid I had made a mistake. I was so very wrong. I am 61 and live on a farm. If it is bad weather everything comes in on the 2 dogs. This vacuum has powerful suction and on the first use pulled so much out of the carpet. A breeze on the hard floor. This is a sturdy well made vacuum. It is NOT heavy or hard to push. Do not be afraid of that at all! I had a Dyson years ago and went to a competitor for my last vacuum. Dyson. I will never choose another vacuum again. Hands down the best vacuum. Thank you!!!

Regret this Dyson purchase

Generally I absolutely love Dyson products (had or have two previous upright vacs (including animal), hand vac, hair dryer, and hair wrap), but this is the worst product I’ve purchased from Dyson. This newest animal vac is so much unbelievably heavier and also bigger than my two previous versions (also appears cheaper made). It is so hard to maneuver/bulkier on any type of carpeting that it is burdensome to use. Truly regret this purchase and am surprised this made it through their design/acceptance team.

Hello,

Thank you for your review. This is Miella from Dyson. We're sorry to hear of the frustration with your Ball Animal 3 upright machine. We designed the Ball Animal 3 with an updated motorbar cleanerhead to provide a deeper clean and less tangles. The Ball Animal 3 is bigger than the predecessor, but it still features the Dyson Ball technology that makes it easily maneuverable around obstacles.

We'd value the opportunity to learn more about your experience with your Dyson as we'd like to help ensure you are having a 5-star experience. Please feel free to reach out to us at askdysonUS@dyson.com, and we will be in touch.

Best Wishes,
Miella

Great suction power poor maneuverability
on October 17, 2022

I'm a first time Dyson user and was very excited to get one for the first time. They are famous for the suction power and that's why I wanted one. Many other brands disappointed me as they leave trails of debris that I would have to go back over. I was very pleased with it's power. My expectation was that it would have great and easy maneuverability but I find it's very stiff and does not angle easily causing my hand to get tired after a while. The handle is not really ergonomically correct. It does ok on the carpeted bedrooms but is very hard to turn on solid surfaces and feels like it only wants to go forward. The handle/nozzle attachment is not quick or easy to pull out and use like other brands. I found an annoyance to use and growled every time I had to pull it out to use it. I do appreciate the hose length, although it's very stiff and hard to keep extended without it wanting to retract back quickly. Other brands were too short causing the vacuum to tumble over if you pulled too far. I was concerned about the suction being too powerful on my higher pile area rugs. It does help that there is height adjustment, but unfortunately it takes an arm workout to run it over the rugs due to the powerful suction. I understand that you can't it have both ways (great suction without drag) but it would be nice if it could adjust suction power much lower with a good sensor to detect shag or high pile rugs. Debris bend is very easy to pop open and clean out. I shed so much and my long hair would clog my other vacuums, not this one! I love that hair does not get caught in roller! For the high price, I would have expected a few more hand tools! There are a lot of positive features but the ease of use and maneuverability could use some fine tuning. Besides it's popularity for reliability and great suction power, it's a fancy looking plasticky machine like all the rest. It's good to finally experience, but way over priced. I had pretty high expectations naturally to meet that price tag, unfortunately I was a bit disappointed and didn't feel it was worth it in the end.

Hi there, this is Kelly with Dyson. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your review with us. This was very helpful to read, and we love to hear and learn from our owners. We're glad that you've found the suction power that the Ball Animal 3 offers to be suitable enough for your home to pick up everything it needs to, including hair. We love the new Anti-tangle Motorbar™ cleaner head, and its ability to direct hair into the dust bin, rather than allowing that to wrap around the brush bar. We listened to feedback of owners of our previous vacuums and this improvement will make vacuuming in homes with pets or even longer human hair much easier with less maintenance.

With regard to the hose, I can confirm that we would essentially expect the hose to become more flexible with time and use. A few tips we can provide would be attaching your accessories directly to your hose, as this will also help expedite stretching the elasticity of the hose. Dyson vacuums are engineered with versatility in mind and attachments may be used on either the wand or directly on the machine itself for added convenience.

If you have any other questions/concerns or feedback you'd like to share, please get in touch with us directly at askdysonUS@dyson.com.

Best wishes,
Kelly
