Good machine but has a poor locking mechanism
on October 16, 2022
Posted by: Salim
We have owned a Dyson before and had it for years. The only reason we gave this model 4 stars is because the locking mechanism for it to stay upright, does not stay in place right away. You think it’s locked and turn away but it falls to the ground. This is very annoying and hopefully it won’t cause any long term damage… we have to check that it’s locked before moving away. We never had this problem with the old model. Hope they fix this issue.

Disappointed

I had high expectations when I bought this vacuum, for well thought out compromises and clever design. Some features are well done like the ball that turns the vacuum by twisting the handle (took me a while to figure that out) and the easy to empty debris container. But some features are not good compromises. One is the self storing hose. While this works well to store the hose, it is like fighting an elephant to use it. It constantly wants to collapse to the storage petition while using it, causing the vacuum to move toward you and the hose to kink near the wand. This is unlikely to improve with time because it is partially caused by the strong vacuum and negative pressure in the hose. The strong vacuum also makes it very difficult to vacuum an area rug. When you get to the edge of the rug and try to reverse direction, the vacuum sucks the rug up and jams the rug beater. You have to shut the vac off to detatch it. To avoid this you have to vacuum one direction and then lift the vac off the floor and put it back in the middle of the rug for each pass. I would prefer a non-collapsible hose that I don't have to fight. It might make sense to offer that as an accessory. The beater bar head is too high (and not wide enough) to get under many objects when used on a hardwood floor. Perhaps an accessory without a beater bar that has a low profile (and wider) that can be mounted in place of the beater?

Hi Dave, this is Kelly with Dyson. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and feedback. We love to hear and learn from our owners. With regard to the hose on your Ball Animal 3, our hoses are generally pretty stiff right out of the box. They will loosen up over time, eventually becoming more flexible or pliable. You can fully outstretch the hose and leave it stretched like that over night - this can help it to relax some and become a bit easier to use.
You might find that when you are vacuuming surfaces such as area rugs or mats, that are not fixed down to the flooring underneath, that it's hard to do so, due to the powerful suction this unit provides. The cleaner head will form a tight seal to the flooring underneath. You may find that by adjusting the slider to the left on the front of the cleaner head will result in an easier maneuverability on those surfaces. If you have any other questions/concerns, please get in touch with us directly at askdysonUS@dyson.com.

Great suction, is too heavy and difficult to maneuver, not an easy vacuum to use.

Hi there, this is Kelly with Dyson. We're sorry to hear that you're not having a 5-star experience with your Ball Animal 3. Your machine features an Anti-tangle Motorbar™ cleaner head, with suction control. The three levels of suction are controlled by the slider on the front of the cleaner head. Slide the suction control to suit the floor type, either positioning the slider left, center or to the right. The operational weight of this vacuum is on par with our other full size upright machines. If you're finding the vacuum hard to push or maneuver, even after adjusting the slider, it could be a compatibility issue with your flooring. We always suggest checking with your carpet maker to see what guidelines they may have regarding suction power or use of a spinning brush bar. If you have any other questions/concerns, please get in touch with us directly at askdysonUS@dyson.com.

Mixed Feelings with 1 Big Negative

I have owned like 10 Dysons between uprights & handheld & while I am impressed with the suction power of this it has flaws. First of all it would be great if this had a full size head & also if it were a bit taller. It's nice to be able to manually adjust the floor height especially with high pile carpet, but I am finding sometimes the adjustment doesn't work. The huge flaw with this vacuum is the no tangle brush head. While it's awesome that it doesn't tangle & you can pull the brush out to clean, on the right side of where the brush attaches string & hair get wound up & dirt & fur collects & packs in. You can't full access this area to clean it & it affects the performance of the machine. I would rather have a machine I could remove all the debris.

All money is in the motor

All the money went into the motor and didn't leave any room to make a quality casing and wheel system. I love the sucking power but hate the cheap feel of everything else. Lots of thin plastics and the wheels don't stay up when moving around when it's off. I wouldn't buy again. We are hoping the plastics last more then a year. Pieces don't fit firmly because of the poor quality in the casing.

Hi there, this is Kelly with Dyson. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on the Ball Animal 3 upright with us. We're glad to hear that you've found the suction power to be so powerful. One great new feature of your vacuum is the Anti-tangle Motorbar™ cleaner head, with suction control. You're able to move the slider from side to side, and adjust suction depending on the floor type you're cleaning. Also, rest assured, Dyson machines are made from polycarbonate ABS, which is same material used in riot shields and crash helmets. They are tough, so we subject them to 50,000 hours of testing and 550 individual tests – all to ensure that they can withstand a lifetime’s hard use. If you have any other questions/concerns, please get in touch with us directly at askdysonUS@dyson.com.

Too heavy, the main brush keeps falling off
on October 16, 2022

I bought this model because it seems to declare the highest suction power. But it seems like when I use that flexible hose the suction power is much lower than when the main brush is used. Also, that flexible hose is super stiff, it is hard to used it without making the whole unit to constantly fall over. The main brush keeps falling off and is cumbersome to reattach, it leaves streaks on my wooden floor (mostly removable but very annoying), it seems to stop spinning / vacuuming randomly (I concluded it might depend on the bend angle). The entire unit is just very heavy: hard to maneuver and I worry the thin plastic stick might break at some point. The worst Dyson product I’ve ever owned.

Heavy & bulky
on October 22, 2022

The vacuum is a 10 for suction, but almost everything else sucks. This is extremely heavy & bulky to move around. Simple things like a lighted front would help to see while vacuuming. The hose is so stiff & not long enough. Why doesn’t added floor attachments just go on the front versus attached to hose? The cord gets in the way constantly & like I said the vacuum is no lightweight. I removed the main front attachment thinking that is where I attach the other floor attachment, & now it doesn’t stay on. I search endless videos online to find answers & demonstrations & hardly any for my model. I have always wanted a Dyson, but dissatisfied I bought now. I have a large home, & to thoroughly clean, it can take at least 45 min. I debated on the cordless, but did not want to chance spending more money only to have the battery not last while vacuuming.

Hey there, this is Kelly with Dyson. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience here with your Ball Animal 3 Complete. This machine features the most powerful suction among our line of upright vacuums. We can confirm that the hose will be rather stiff the first few times you use it. We would expect for that to become more pliable with frequent use and stretching. For added versatility, any of the included tools or attachments may be used on the end of the hose, or the end of the wand. The only thing that should be attached to the front or base of the machine is the cleanerhead. The tools/attachments will not, and are not intended for use there We would be happy to walk you through reaching the cleaner head to the base. Please contact us directly at askdysonUS@dyson.com for assistance.

Not so great

Vacuum falls apart a lot, it has to be held at just the right angle or the dirt won’t go all the way into the canister. The ball makes it difficult to control. I loved my old Dyson which is why I bought another one. I really wish I hadn’t.

Hello,
Thank you for your review. This is Miella from Dyson. We're sorry to hear of your experience with your Ball Animal 3 upright machine. The Ball Animal 3 is designed with ABS plastic, the same material in police riot shields, and go through a rigorous testing to ensure it can withstand even more than the average bump and drop. It's definitely peculiar that it's falling apart, and that's not what we expect for our customers.
The patented Dyson Ball technology is designed to make maneuvering and control easier. Out-the-box, the joints can be a bit stiff since it's so new, but after several uses, the Ball will swivel and maneuver a lot easier.
We'd value the opportunity to learn more about your experience with your Dyson as we'd like to help ensure you are having a 5-star experience. Please feel free to reach out to us at askdysonUS@dyson.com, and we will be in touch.
