Not an Animal, a Beast!

We purchased this for our new home as our previous Dyson was getting on in years. This may be called Ball Animal because it handles like a beast! I just worked up a complete sweat just trying to vacuum a large area, mostly tiled, but some medium pile carpet. Trying to push it over the carpet on any setting is next to impossible, slightly easier when pulling it. The video on this page of the guy effortlessly gliding over a carpet is totally laughable. On the tiled areas it does a very good job of cleaning, but, again is a beast to handle. It just doesn't seem to respond to my attempts to guide it. It is nothing like our previous DC39.

Good for Floors only

This unit has very good suction. better than average. Cleans floors and carpets very well. Have owned it for 3 months and regret buying it. Trying to clean cushions, anything that requires a brush with bristles is barely an option. The offer no decent tools with any sort of medium bristle. Trying to clean fabric chairs, cushions, felt, practically impossible. The hose tension once you remove the wand is horrible. It fights you every step of the way. I regret buying this. If you have needs to use attachments on this hose, you'll want to smash it to bits by the time your done. Absolutely hate it. Vacuums are meant to be used for more than a floor.

So disappointed

I bought this vacuum thinking it would be an upgrade to my previous Dyson and I am so glad I still have my old one to keep using instead. I also typically don't pay attention to reviews because it seems as though only people who have something negative to say review items, yet here I am writing a negative review. This vacuum is heavy and takes a lot to muscle to maneuver. The hose is not flexible nor easy to use and when you stretch it out, the vacuum falls over. Lastly, when trying to leave the vacuum in the upright position to wheel it to a new area, the vacuum won't stay locked in the upright position. Hit a bump and the head falls and you have to reset. Bottom line is I do not recommend this vacuum, it does not live up to the standard I've come to expect from Dyson. Not to leave out a positive, I haven't had to clean hair from the brush roll!

motorized floor attachment

I don't typically write reveiws but so disappointed in this vacuum. Not the quality of the older models, Hose is cheep and will mostlikely wear out at the point it bends by the hard plastic hand wand. If you use hose, machine tips overs. Hard floor motorized attachment does detangle hair but is constantly detaches from the round ball. Round ball will totally detach from floor attachement when trying to place in suction position. It also won't easily then return to the upright free standing position. The only positive so far is it does have very good suction. Had vacuum about a year. Have a 1100 sqft home and ball detaches from floor attachement 3-4 times before I get my home vacuumed.

Caveat Emptor
on May 27, 2023

As a standing floor vacuum, its power is great with the minor con being maneuverability (have to get used to it and muscle it a bit) and the moderate con being the "flexible" hose. It's virtually USELESS.
If you use the "flexible" hose, I recommend you lay the vacuum down flat because if you pull it at all, it WILL fall. It's TERRIBLE and the design is shockingly BAD. When you pull it out, the ~2 feet of stiff plastic tubing is at the working end of the "flexible" hose which, in turn, makes it not flexible in function unless you want to just use it as a canister vacuum... which still won't work well because it'll either fall over and break or you drag it along the floor.
In the end, the have attachments, especially the dog hair attachment, have been UNUSABLE because the FLEXIBLE HOSE IS UNUSABLE. So if you plan to purchase, I recommend you take into consideration that you are paying for features that are NOT as advertised.

Best Cleaning / Worst Durability

This was my second Dyson. My first one lasted 10 years! This one has lasted less than one year. The suction and cleaning power is second to none. Pulled out the deepest of dirt and pet hair. The design was cumbersome and the cheap plastic was a constant source of concern, but I was willing to overlook that for the cleaning power. The real disappointment came last week when, less than a year after I bought it, the roller brush stopped working. After some internet research and repair video watching we have determined that there is a switch that has failed somewhere and will need to be replaced. There are no repair facilities in my state, nor in the surrounding states, so I now have a hunk of cheap plastic trash. So disappointing. I won't buy another one at these prices.

Yes, True! Hair pickup, Tangle free!

First, thank you Dyson for recyclable cardboard packaging. No styrofoam!
Coming from a ~2012 DC14, I was concerned about review references to cheap plastics. Yes, the plastics are different, lighter, than the DC14. I do not feel like it will start crackling & breaking. Time will tell!
This Animal 3 is like a "scale model" of the DC14. Thru & thru, it is about 80% of the size. For me, great. My small home likes this. The maneuverability of the ball is great, and the smaller main head gets under cabinet overhangs and kitchen chairs, where the DC14 was always "a smidge too big". But if your home is large, Animal 3 may feel like going from a push broom to a toothbrush.
Performance. I needed the tangle free hair function. Was skeptical, "too good to be true?". OH NO! IT'S TRUE! I have long hair and a medical condition causing hair loss. My Animal picked up bin after bin of hair, and NOTHING left in the beater brush.
Folks mentioning it being too heavy & cumbersome, perhaps they need a lighter cordless model. I fully expected what I got in an upright corded machine - heavy duty! Not a dusting job. Dyson - we old-schoolers like it.
Other reviews mention the machine suctioning to their floors. I did not experience this on my tile, aging pile carpet, or large dense weave area rugs. That said Dyson's many feedback comments suggesting folks need to contact their carpet manufactures about this problem... disturbing. If my car's tires perform poorly on pavement, suggesting I contact the pavement manufacturer would be silly. Do you get that analogy?
Ease of transforming modes. This Animal is clunky by comparison. The DC14, about 10 seconds, three motions, from upright to attachment & tube mode. This Animal takes more wrangling of slide this, click that, push here. The on-board attachments are no longer integrated. They fit more like an "oh yeah, we forgot" goiter, and mine is wiggly. Lacks the solid "built this way" of the DC14. Minus 1-star there.
Overall, yes, I recommend this. Yes, hair-free is true.

Now it won't pick anything up
on May 2, 2023

I bought this thing less than a year ago. Last June, I wrote a review to comment on the hose that won't stay extended. Dyson said, in effect, that I should just use it more. Didn't work. Now the machine won't pick up anything including bits of dog hair on a hard floor. I have cleaned both filters and looked inside the machine to find any obstructions. There aren't any. The hose does have suction for some reason. My one-star rating remains in effect.
