I'm ecstatic to own another pair of headphones from Bose's latest and greatest Bose Quiet Comfort Ultra Headphones. I love the continuation of the Quiet Comfort series as it is a name that is synonymous with comfort, lightweight, and the best noise-canceling headphones/earphones around. The build quality is fantastic, and it looks and feels expensive. It has a clean outline and a sophisticated look to it. The high-quality mattified metal arms retract within the headband. The headband and the ear cups have thick and soft cushions with soft leatherette material. Although the clamp on the ear is a bit tighter than the Bose QC 45s, this headphone is still very comfortable. I enjoy wearing it in the office at work on "Aware" mode, where I can enjoy the beautiful stereo sound in my ear and still hear all the background noise around me. When I go on my one-hour lunch break after a quick bite and a brisk walk, I take advantage of some relaxing jazz music afterward and enjoy the Immersive Audio on "Still" mode, which is mind-boggling and as close to 3D audio as you can get. It's like going to a club with the ginormous stereo on your ear and the sound goes from one ear to the next ear as you shake and twist your head from side to side. The most enjoyable feature I love on the headphones is the auto-pause feature. When you take off your headphones, your audio will automatically pause. And likewise, when you get it back on your head, it will continue to play where it left off. The battery life is long-lasting. I enjoy it on my commute home on public transportation, and it even has enough juice to enjoy with my TV at home after my daughter goes to sleep so I can enjoy my late-night crime show. I love the high-density crush-proof case with the molded ear cuff inside. The presentation and packaging are premium, and this bundle of joy makes me happy. Now my daughter wants one, too!

Great Noise Cancelling with warm, natural Sound

Overall, the design is more compact and more streamlined, the new clean hinge design. It gives a light but sturdy feel and adjusts the position quickly. The pressure on the top and ear pads is just right and conceals ears fully. The sound is warm-natural, great for jazz and vocal music, and gives plenty of bass that can be adjusted through the EQ setting in the BOSE App. With a BT5.3, it can hold up to 8 devices. From my test with four different sources, there was no issue with switching on to others. It shows a noticeable operation range, working through the whole house (about 1200 Sq ft). No sound or connection breakages were noticed. The sound setting mode is similar to others: quiet, aware, and immersive. The immersive way gives a more focused and loud sound. The noise cancellation is on the top tier, and there are no complaints about listening conditions. The control is more intuitive and provides detailed customization. It gives a more straightforward way to control a single touch and sliding finger to adjust volumes and assign a customer function. It is a slim design with user experience in mind, A.K.A “ease of use,” with a natural sound focusing on the vocal and top tier ANC (noise canceling), so there is no doubt that it is one of the best travel companions.

Comfort with excellent sound & noise cancellation

I am the owner of some Bose QuietComfort Earbuds which I loved. My wife has some Bose QuietComfort Headphones which she loves, and after trying her headphones out I decided I wanted to get some headphones for myself for the better sound and noise cancelation that headphones have over earbuds. After all, earbuds will never be able to match headphones. Since both my wife and I had a great experience with Bose products, I decided to go with the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones.
The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones come in a nice little case. The headphones fold up to a more compact size so that they fit in the case. The case has molding in the inside that helps guide placing the headphones in the case properly. This was a bit different than my wife's older Bose Headphones where the case doesn't have molding so it's sometimes hard to figure out how exactly the headphones are supposed to go in the case. My wife actually prefers the case without molding because it lets her place her headphones in the case in any direction that fits, but for me the guide helped me figure out how to get the headphones in the case.
The headphones also come with a short USB C cable and traditional male to male headphone cable. The optional detachable headphone cable is nice because it means you doesn't always have to have a dangling headphone cable but also gives you the option to connect to a wired headphone device if needed (for example if the device has no Bluetooth). The headphones have USB C connectivity which is nice. This is an upgrade from my wife's older Bose headphones which had a micro-USB connection. It's nice to standardize all devices to USB C charging cables. While charging, the headphones will show a steady amber light. Once fully charged, the light turns to green, letting you easily know when its fully charged. For a more accurate reading, you can also look at charging levels in the Bose Music app (more on this later).
I connected my new Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones to both my iPhone 13 and iPad Air (4th generation) via Bluetooth (more on this later) and gave them a try with some various music tracks and YouTube video content. The sound was fantastic, much better than my Bose QuietComfort Earbuds (which also has fantastic sound). The headphones have great bass. Bose has a Bose Music app for the iPhone which you can customize the sound settings via an equalizer. This allows you to customize the sound to your preference.
Regarding the noise cancellation, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones really shine. I tested them in several different scenarios including:
1) Mowing the lawn on a riding tractor 2) Next to a very loud gas power generator for some soccer field lights 3) In an airplane 4) At the gym
In every instance, the headphones almost entirely cancelled out the outside noise allowing me to fully hear and enjoy the music or content I was listening to. In the case of using them on an airplane, I watched a movie on my iPad and it completely cut out the airplane/engine noise allowing me to fully hear the dialog in the movie. I was most impressed when it cut out the noise to a gas-powered generator that I was sitting next to while watching my son's soccer practice. The generator powered lights for a soccer field where my son practices at night. Absolutely the best noise cancelling that I have ever experienced, surpassing my Bose QuietComfort Earbuds (which again also have very good noise cancelling).
There are several noise cancelling options in the Bose Music app that allows you to set different levels of noise cancellation. I tended to almost always use the highest level as the whole purpose to allow me to full immerse myself in the music, movie, or content that I was listening to. I imagine that you could use some of the lower levels of noise cancellation if you needed to hear some of your surroundings, but I found myself just taking the headphones off of one of my ears for those situations (probably just my own personal habit).
The one big difference between my Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones and my wife's normal Bose QuietComfort Headphones when it came to sound is that the Ultra headphones have an additional mode called Immersive Audio. The feature does add a little more umph to the sound and was cool but ultimately for me it wasn't that big of a feature. I almost found it more gimmicky than anything else. I definitely wouldn't count on just this one feature to upgrade from a normal Bose QuietComfort Headphones to Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones. Cool feature, but I wouldn't say it's a must have.
The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones themselves are very comfortable to wear. I never felt any unusual strain. The ear padding was very comfortable and really kept the sound in the headphones. You can easily adjust them to fit your head. By comparison, I also find my Bose QuietComfort Earbuds very comfortable, but if I had to choose between the two for comfort, I would have to pick the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds. The earbuds have almost absolutely no weight and fit comfortably in your ears. If I wanted to wear something while trying to lay down, I would probably pick the earbuds over the headphones. This isn't to say that they headphones aren't comfortable - they are just bulkier and therefore not as comfortable as the earbuds. It's just the nature of the beast in each instance and you use the appropriate one for whatever scenario you find its best for.
Despite the great features of the headphones themselves, I did have some issues with the headphones:
1) The experience connecting to Bluetooth on my iPhone and iPad via the Bose Music app isn't very good. It's very hit and miss. It mostly connects to the Bluetooth on the devices without issue, but for some reason the Bose Music app doesn't always see the device, even though it's connected to Bluetooth and the headphones work with the device. First time setup especially was a pain and took several tries of pairing and unpairing with Bluetooth to get things to work. I have the same problem with my Bose QuietComfort Earbuds so this isn't a problem with just the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones. It seems to be a problem with the Bose Music app on iOS devices.
2) The headphones have a feature where it can connect to multiple devices at the same time. I'm not sure not sure why you would want to listen to different audio sources at the same time, but I found it annoying. It always seemed to initially play audio from the device that I currently wasn't using (which was usually across the house - although on that note the headphones do have very good Bluetooth range). Thankfully though you can turn this feature off in the Bose Music app.
3) Another feature is that content stops playing if you remove the headphones. In theory this sounds like it makes sense, and it sometimes does make sense, but sometimes if I just needed to listen to something externally for a second, I would remove just one of the earpieces and it would stop the content when I didn't necessarily want it to stop. Thankfully this is also a feature that can be configured via the Bose Music app.
4) The lack of physical buttons on the device. I tend to like physical buttons to control functions and don't like to use gestures (mainly because I forget what gestures do what). The headphones only has two buttons, and they aren't labeled so I forget what button does what. Volume is controlled by sliding your finger on the side of one of the earpieces. I usually forget which side and have to "hunt" for where the volume control is located. Thankfully it does have a ridge to help identify the area to control the volume, but I am always having to hunt for the ridge. I honestly have no idea how to control Next/Previous/Play-Pause and find myself just using the controls on the iPhone/iPad instead. My wife's normal Bose QuietComfort Headphones has five clearly labeled buttons which I like a lot more. It seems Bose went with the minimalist design for the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones to make the headphones look "pretty" instead of the more functional design of including clearly labeled buttons. Some may be a fan of the minimalist design, but I am a fan of clearly labeled buttons.
5) When I used the headphones for several hours straight, mainly on a long red eye airplane trip where I was playing no content and just wanted to cut out the airplane noise and have some quite while I tried to sleep, my ears started to get uncomfortable with the noise cancellation. It wasn't a physical discomfort from wearing the headphones - the headphones themselves are very comfortable to wear. It was more like my brain and ears felt like there was something off with not hearing any natural noises and so it started to become uncomfortable. I had to take the headphones off and just hear things to get back to a comfortable state. This may just be a testament of how good the noise cancelling is on these headphones that it almost does too good of a job. Using them without actually listening to content leads to an almost unnatural quite state. This is an instance where I may have opted to use one of the noise cancelling headphones levels that wasn't quite as good at noise cancelling, but I didn't think of it at the time.
Ultimately, I would strongly recommend these headphones. I know I pointed out several things I didn't like about the headphones, but at the end of the day these are minor issues (some which hopefully will be fixed with future updates such as the Bose Music app connectivity issues) when compared to how awesome the sound and noise cancellation are on these headphones and how comfortable they are. I deducted one star for the minor issues, but if they at the very least fixed the app connectivity issues, I would probably give it five stars and could easily ignore the other issues I had.
