Hard to set-up

I have the old version of this product which did not need a "c" wire yet the new one requires a and in older houses this is an issue as most have heating only that only requires 2 wires. I had a new gas boiler installed and all six zones were rewired into a new zone controller which only needs two wires for each thermostat incuding the older versions of the nest. So after a number of hours worked out how to add a"C" to get the other 4 new nests to work. I understand the older version that does not require a "C" is only available though the Pro installer program,so as an homeowner DIY person you have to figure out how to add a 'C" wire, yet if you a Pro you can charge for installation and not have to deal with adding a "c" wire.

Hi Richard, thank you for trying out the new Nest Thermostat and sharing your experience with us. We're sorry you encountered such an inconvenience with the common (C) wire.

In most cases, Nest Thermostats can get enough power using your system’s heating and cooling wires. However, Zoning may divide the power coming from your system wiring since it will need to power up all your thermostats, causing inadequate power that’s being distributed to all the thermostats. In this case, we recommend a common wire installation is needed to deliver a stable and consistent power to your thermostat, and prevent odd heating and cooling behaviors on your system such as short cycling or making strange noises.

A Whole Lot of Technology In a Little Package

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The G2 Nest Thermostat has an incredible amount of features in a little circle and it looks great on the wall also. It is small and sleek and the chalk color blends in light colored walls. Pictures of the mirrored dial really do not do it justice; the mirror actually allows the G2 to blend into the surroundings. The screen is blank except when you are changing the temperature which helps it blend in even more. The thermostat is so easy to install, I am convinced anyone can do it themselves in less than 20 minutes. It took me less than 15 mins. Downloading the app was quick and easy on my iPhone. The app provided clear and detailed instructions for insulation and set up. Each step had a description of what to do as well as a picture/diagram. The actual thermostat had simple pinch connections for the wires thus eliminating the need to use a screwdriver to install the wires. It even has a small level embedded in the back to help on the install. The app is packed with feature to control the thermostat from multiple schedules to remote control from anywhere to alerts for things like filter changes. The app also will suggest setting and schedule changes although we have a pretty stable routine, it looks like our setting (days, times and temperatures) look good to Google. Even controlling the thermostat manually is cool, you change the temperature by running your finger along the side. This is my second smart thermostat, the first was a different brand, and the Nest G2 is head and shoulders above my first. Not only is the design much nicer, the app is considerably more intuitive, easier to navigate and much simpler to control the thermostat settings. Google did an outstanding job designing and putting the app together on this thermostat.

I updated from a Honeywell Lyric smart thermostat. This new Nest unit is more simple to use, especially if you use the setup app. I quickly learn to set temp. for different times. This has been very convenient for my family. Compare to the old Lyric unit, this Nest has never disconnected from the network. I'm very happy with my purchase.

My Nest thermostat is fantastic, it is in my welding shop that is not where I live. When I leave for the shop I turn it up to 60 degrees and it is warm when I get there. The Eco mode kicks on when it senses my phone is out of home range and turns it down to 45. I have one in my home as well which I can control from anywhere including on out of state vacations and trips.

Not A Smart Thermostat
on June 26, 2021

Two different thermostats were tried. An email was sent to replace it because an issue was noticed the second one did the same thing. Inside temperature was never correct and even with all the wires connected they still had problems. I will not be trying a third one.

Hi BB MCBEATH, thanks for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We're sorry to hear Nest Thermostat is not giving accurate temperature readings.

As the replacement thermostat is doing the same, there can be several reasons why this may be happening. A difference of a couple of degrees is acceptable as your benchmarking thermostat on Nest thermostat. But greater differences do need attention. Below are some steps that may help you with the issue:

- Restart the thermostat by pressing the display until it shows a black screen and wait until it's back up and running. A restart should be sufficient to re-calibrate them and show an accurate value.
- Nest thermostats in the U.S. and Canada are typically installed on a wall. Check for proximity of the thermostat to: air vents / electrical outlets / appliances / plumbing (hot water pipes) / warm air in the wall behind the thermostat. This may also affect the reading for the temperature.
- Some wireless access points cause the Nest thermostat’s wifi chip to overheat, which affects the thermostat’s detected ambient temperature. We can disconnect the network for 24 hours and monitor the temperature.

We're hoping you will give us another chance to work with you and further look into the issue. Feel free to contact our support team here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp
