Hi chuckb, thanks for sharing your review of the new Nest Thermostat. Sorry to hear that the instructions were unclear about the need of the common(C) wire.
Nest thermostats are designed to be able to work efficiently without the need of a power or common (C) wire when the heating and cooling wires of your system can deliver enough power to the Nest Thermostat. However, some heating/cooling systems can't deliver adequate power to one or more Nest thermostats. In such cases, Nest Thermostats need a common (C) wire that goes into the C terminal of the thermostat base. The next best step would be to contact a Nest Pro technician to check your system and install a common (C) wire if needed.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love this thermostat - it looks so cool and was easy to set up. It looks so much better in my house than my previous one and it is fun and easy to use - even for a non technological person. I definitely would recommend!

Had a bit of a problem with the installation, but that appears to be corrected at this point. Otherwise really do like the Nest Thermostat.

Gotta Get Used to It!

Received the mini and tried to install it. It seemed straight forward, everything went smooth, but after all said and done, we had an error on the thermostat we could not resolve. Called support and after an hour or so, it was determined that the new version needed a different power supply wire. Had to have a Tech come to fix. Then it wouldn't shut off the air conditioning. Had to figure out how to set it. Almost thought it was not worth all the effort, but now that it's up and running, all is A-OK.

Love it...with the exception of the thermostat sensing when you approach. Tried many ways to make it work as designed, including removing and reinstalling to no avail.

Nest Not Good for Zoned Systems
on August 2, 2021
Posted by: timothy
Can't figure it out totally... so its a complicated set up for the basic nest I just bought to work with, and power up, correctly for zoned systems. Thinking about returning. Crazy too that they did not put a trim plate in the NEST, there are no round thermostats that match that footprint. Overall...not a DIY project especially if you have to patch and paint the wall

Hi timothy, thanks for sharing your insights. We´re sorry for any complication you may be having, setting up your Nest Thermostat.
Nest thermostats are usually compatible with zoned systems that use multiple thermostats, including zoned systems with dampers. However, some zoned systems that require thermostat damper control aren’t compatible with Nest thermostats, while other zoned systems may need a C or common wire, or the Nest Power Connector, to be compatible. We recommend contacting a Nest Pro technician to help with setting up and configuring your Nest Thermostat with your zoned system.

Hi Shiobian,
Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback.
While the Nest Thermostat is compatible with 85% of HVAC systems and designed to receive the needed power from the heating and cooling wires, some systems like heat-only, or cool-only heat pumps may require a common (C) wire to operate.
