I recommend this kitchen scale to everyone. The convenience of weighing your ingredients saves you from so many dirty measuring cups and utensils. As someone who bakes a lot this scale is a lifesaver and I will never go back to using measuring cups!

Great scale

I like this scale a lot. I've had it for a couple of months & use it every day. It's used regularly for weighing foods, mostly, though I use this more often the weigh the cat food I make for my cats & the supplements used to make it.
Yeah, I know, I know - crazy cat lady who makes food for her cats. And, I guess in a way that's the case, but it's because I want my animals to have a healthy diet so that they are healthy. It began when my cats suddenly stopped eating the food they had eaten for years. Believe me, if I didn't feel it was necessary to do this, I wouldn't be doing it. I don't enjoy it very much.
The cats just absolutely stopped eating. I tried other brands of food, many that were on the pricey side. After trying about a dozen foods which they refused to eat, I started making it. Fortunately they like it & fortunately, it's a whole lot cheaper than expensive canned foods.
Generally, I'll make 35 - 40 lbs at a time, which lasts a few months. Accurate measurement is extremely important To assure the food has enough nutrients, but not too much. The supplement, which provides all of the vitamins, minerals & other nutrients necessary for a healthy pet is measured in grams. The measurement needs to be carefully computed, based on the amount of meat that is being used. There's a formula to use so many grams of the supplement per pound of meat & it needs to be precisely accurate.
I have a scale that I've used for years & it's been reasonably reliable. But I've felt increasingly less secure about the accuracy of the scale I was using. It seemed reasonably accurate, but sometimes I would get slightly different weights when weighing something repeatedly. It wasn't much. It would vary by about 100th of an ounce, up to 300ths of an ounce, not a lot but enough to make me question whether it was time to get a new scale.
Then the scale started shutting off while I was using it. I changed the batteries, but it continued shutting off periodically. That's when I decided it was definitely time for a new scale.
I liked this scale when I came across it, first because of the Oxo name. Every Oxo product I've ever had or used has been fabulous. The products that Oxo makes are well-thought out & thoughtfully designed. The pull out read-out on the scale is just such an innovation that I really appreciate. Sometimes when I weighing something, it is on a larger plate of bowl & inevitably it's impossible to read the weight because the plate of bowl is in the way. I overcame that by placing a tall-ish bowl, mug or cup on the scale, taring it & then weighing the item on the plate. It's a minor hassle. The real problem with doing this, it that it's necessary to balance whatever is on the plate. I've had a couple of spills when the plate slipped off of the mug & the food ended up all over the counter. This pull-out display is the answer.
I also like that the weighing surface is large. It is much larger than what I had. That alone makes seeing the reading on the scale much easier. The pull out display is just icing on the cake.
Not only do I use a scale when making cat food in order to measure the supplement, but I use it daily when making up their food. I generally make 35 - 40 pounds of food & break it up into smaller containers of 12 ounces eat, enough for two meals of 3 ounces for two cats per day. I add additional water & another supplement when I mix up each days' food. For those I use measuring cups & spoons, but I use the scale to measure out the four meals for the day. I want to assure the cats are getting approximately the same amount per meal.
One of the drawbacks of this scale is that it only weighs to the tenth of an ounce. The old scale measured to a hundredth of an ounce, which I preferred. I like having that precision, though it isn't absolutely essential. Another thing I'd like to see on this scale is the ability to pull the display out further. When I first ordered this, I thought that the display could be detached from the scale & laid a few inches to the side of the scale. I was somewhat disappointed that I can't do that. Finally, I wish the scale could weight heavier items up to about 15 pounds. While I don't weigh the meat I use for the cat food on this because it weighs up to 40 pounds, I do weigh other things when I'm cooking or baking & sometimes they are a bit higher in weight. I can certainly use the old scale to weigh those things, and I expect I will, though I'd have preferred to use a single scale so that I don't have a duplicate scale taking up extra space.
Other than those few things. I love this scale. It has made daily weighing of foods much easier.

Needs a seal around the battery compartment

This is a great scale. Accurate, easy to use, easy to clean. I buy one about every three years. That's because liquids go straight into the battery compartment if there's a spill. A spill in the kitchen.
C'mon guys, it can't cost more than a penny or two to put a little rubber gasket in there and make this device perfect.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This was actually a replacement for my scale which I have had for several years and really like. So thank you for making a quality product and then standing behind it.
