Amazing Screen!

I'm really happy with this head unit so far. The screen is a huge upgrade from my previous 1040. It's much easier to see in pretty much any lighting conditions.

Reboots during rides, auto-dim and auto lap issues
on July 29, 2024

I bought this a few weeks ago...terrible, keeps rebooting in the middle of a rides. Auto dim and auto lap won't turn off even though the settings are OFF. Going to Girona, Spain September 2024... Please fix, send a replacement or refund... I will have to use my Garmin 1030 Plus with my Garmin-Rally-V3 power pedals.

Good, but with flaws

Default Screen config should include other metrics - although this can be tailored.
The Screen that shows climbing (not in navigation mode) is too busy and hard to read.
The mount does NOT fit most bikes (too short) - a major design flaw.
Screen size is smaller than the actually face of the device and could be made larger (take a look at how iPhones overcame this in their evolution).
Varia Radar mode needs a filter to reduce the clutter of too many vehicles (noise).

Meaningful improvement over 1040
on July 26, 2024

While mostly similar to the 1040, the screen is a ton better. That’s the obvious improvement. But maybe the bigger improvement is the audio… the voice. With my 1040 it seemed to be constantly beeping at me, and 2/3rds of the time I had. O idea why it was beeping unless I took the time to slow down, look down, and r sad the screen. And sometimes the “reason” had already cycled off the screen. As a mountain biker I found it incredibly annoying. Incessant beeping. The 1050 fixes that with voice commands for most of the important things.
There is still plenty of room for improvement:
* As a mountain biker, intersections are often challenging to navigate. The improved screen helps, but what would be better is a to have the course a thicker and consistent color. Magenta. Always. And no other trail or road would be magenta. Otherwise it’s a stop and stare and zoom exercise at pretty much all 3 way intersections.
* The interface just isn’t that intuitive to me. I spend 10 minutes prior to every ride just trying to figure out how to get what I want on the screen.
* it would be nice if it there was an option to announce (voice) the gear after a gear change. Or maybe flash it BIG on the screen (like the entire screen). Sometimes I feel like the devices are tailored to roadies with mountain bikers as an afterthought…. It can be very difficult if not impossible to look at the screen on a lot of trail sections. More voice.
* maybe a screen option that uses half the screen for the map and the rest be user configurable? A lot of my riding is on trails I’ve never ridden before. It would be great to just have half the screen to help me with turns but the rest of the screen for my choice of data fields.

a little heavier- but worth it!

I've upgraded from the smaller Edge 830- but think it's worth it. It doesn't allow for drag & drop to a mac, but I'm getting better with Garmin Connect-- which is very easy to use. It's going to take me the rest of the year to learn how to use all the features, but it seems pretty worth it at this point!

LOVE the new screen!!!

Garmin have addressed every issue I have historically had with the Edge units. The new screen is just amazing!! The new UI is a very nice improvement and moving to a true speaker is a nice addition. The response to changes in incline have improved immensely and the new features are cool. So far, I'm very impressed with the 1050 and I feel it was a very worthwhile upgrade!!!
