Confused , not intuitive…
on November 1, 2024

I purchased this a few weeks ago. And for me, it’s just not intuitive I’d like to be able to go on a trail. I just had to show me where I’m at. Set up a home screen and find my way home. I’ll have to check a few videos out but so far I’m really not impressed I have a bunch of Garmin products which I love one for my RV IDK maybe it’s just me

Fantastic Bike Computer

The 1050 is a phenomenal bike computer. The display is easily the best on the market at the time I am writing this article. Plenty of screen real estate and packed with features. The only drawbacks are the size and the odd decision by Garmin to change the location of the mount on the back of the unit. The size is a personal preference and the trade-off for screen real estate and may not be for everyone. However, it is really helpful when using the navigation feature or if you have a need for a lot of data displayed on a screen. The mount location is the biggest drawback. Garmin placed the mount further towards the top edge of the unit than with previous bike computers like the 840 or 1040. The net effect of this is that the 1050 will not fit on many out-front mounts on many bikes. Many users will either need a mount extension or have to switch styles of mount to go on the stem rather than out-front. Other than that, the unit is fantastic. Battery life, while not as good as the 840/1040 series, is still fantastic and will work for all but the most dedicated ultra distance cyclists.

Adjustable volume, but at a price!

Finally, a model with adjustable alert volume, but at a price that is pretty ridiculous. The alert volume on all previous Garmin models was not adjustable. Hence, I could barely hear radar alerts on my Edge Explore 2 or Edge 1040 while riding in traffic and with wind noise. And my hearing is not that bad, yet. So maybe I am the dope for opting for this model, but there it is anyway.

Good upgrade from the 1040

I bought the 1050 mostly due to the brighter screen, basically the 1040 is only as bright as the 1050 at 50%, that is how bright the 1050 is. Overall the 1050 is a bit heavier but imho looks a lot better. My only complaint is that the gear display field is worse than the 1040 even though the display is better. I like to have my gears (the vertical lines displayed) at the top of my screen. For some reason on the 1050 the vertical lines are so narrow that it is difficult to see which gear is highlighted eventhough there is a lot of space in this field to make the lines thicker. Garmin please make these vertical lines thicker in a software update, so they are easier to read. One final note, with the improved screen there is still a very limited selection of colors and would like to see a color wheel where a user can do a custom color. I hope Garmin improves the gear selection field to make it more visible and adds the custom colors, other that these two complaints, I am happy with the 1050.

Mixed Thoughts

I recently purchased the 1050 because it had so many options and screen brightness. The screen brightness is as stated and the many options are there as well. I do find it difficult to navigate thoes options and find very little support via internet on the 1050. The owner's manuel does offer some assistance but is "print laden" and very few images to help the Garmin novice easily work through the verbage. For this reason I gave it three stars. I have owned it for a couple of weeks and am still slogging through a lack of understanding to shape its options to reflect my needs. There was one screen I saw which identified my HRZ, the remaining length of time in my workout, and step of the workout process. I thought to myself, "wow, this is great.". Then I could never bring that particular window up again! So frustrating.
