Like it more than expected

I'm not nor ever have been a competitive cyclist, and at 78yo this is truer than ever. In fact, I didn't see any need to upgrade to this device except that my wife has had her eye on "inheriting" my 1030 Plus. So I went ahead and bought the 1050 and have been more than pleased with its features (and I probably only use about 10% of what's there!). Mainly it's the bright, colorful, hi-res screen that makes a huge difference. Colors pop like never before and even the smallest fonts are crisp and clear (see the photo of the MyEdge2 iQConnect app screen).
Another welcome improvement is that it appears to respond quicker to gradient changes than the 1030+ did. I haven't yet used it to navigate a preloaded route but that's one of my prime uses for it, and the finer detail on the map screen should be useful. On my rides so far I've even been notified of construction, hazards, or heavy traffic ahead but I haven't yet figured out how to report those types of conditions.
So overall I'm very happy with my purchase and my wife is also happy with her "new" 1030 Plus!

Best Edge Screen Ever!
on June 2, 2025
Posted by: Kmilman
With me getting older, having a big, bright screen was a major requirement and the Edge 1050 delivers on that and more! I upgraded from a 1030 and the difference is night and day. The 1050 is not only brighter, but the responsiveness is like using a mobile phone. Some other likes and dislikes:
- The bell is nice but I can’t access easily with my older DI2 setup.
- The community hazards is a good idea but needs more adoption in my area to be useful. I haven’t had a hazard warn me of something I wouldn’t have caught myself.
- I like the new Real Time Stamina. Seems to accurately reflect my potential at any point of a ride.
- Swiping up to get the widget glances is a nice touch.
- Identifying high use streets and paths in the map is annoying. There needs to be a heat map like coloring to distinguish the roads most taken when just riding in an area you don’t know.
- Climbpro has rarely shown my accurate location on the hill. It seems to represent me being about 5-10% further along than I actually am (even with the highest location accuracy setting).
- Battery life has been fine. Recent 40 mile ride used up about 20% of battery from full.
- Setup was a nightmare. I still have so many problems loading ConnectIQ fields.
4 stars overall, but can anticipate a 5 star device with upgrades to ConnectIQ usage, and some mapping / routing improvements.

It’s amazing with one caveat.

So I will start with the caveat, if you have a 1040 especially the solar model it won’t feel like a transformative upgrade. The device does everything aside from battery life a little better than the 1040 solar that I had prior. The battery life isn’t a deal breaker nor is it bad. I’m charging every 300 miles with full functionality. It has no flaws to speak of but aside from the better UI and screen it doesn’t feel like it added anything from the 1040. If you have a 540 it would be a big upgrade and if you have a 30 series or older go for it.

Garmin Edge 1050 is a Lifesaver
on May 29, 2025

The Garmin Edge 1050 is the best bike computer I have ever owned. The bell chime feature is perfect for riding on trails and in crowds. The Emergency Alarm feature is a life saver. It alerted my family when I had a bike crash and notified them immediately and provided them with the precise location of the accident.

Good with minor complaints
on May 29, 2025

I like the new Edge 1050. Replaced my Edge 1040 which I gave to my wife. The screen is bright and easy to use. The 1050 was easy to set up. Three minor complaints:
1. The screen cover/glass is highly reflective, unlike the 1040. When riding in bright sun and at the right angle, the glint off the screen is piercingly bright. Wish the screen had a non-reflective coating. It's irritating to the eyes, even with sunglasses.
2. The battery life is definitely shorter than the 1040 (non-solar). Makes sense since the screen is brighter. Still plenty of battery for a five- or six-hour ride, but definitely needs more charging than the 1040.
3. Every time I finish a ride, the 1050 congratulates me on a new "longest distance" PR which is not true. I have no idea how to get it to stop doing this. This is something the 1050 has been doing since its launch, judging by forum postings. No software upgrade has fixed this glitch. This did not happen with the 1040.
Other than that, I'm pleased with the 1050. I would recommend it, especially for those who might be traveling and need downloaded maps/routes.

Not impressed..

So far, I am not impressed with this device. Seems rain changes how the screen behaves. It would be great if Garmin sensors last longer so I could fully used all features of this device. Is it worthed that much money? I dont know.. But I would be happy to pay less for it

By far the best Garmin Cycling product to date and the God Father of all cycling head units. By a long shot the best colored screen on the market.
