I got these for the ability to put my hands in different positions. I switch back and forth between these and the nylon ones. These are very sturdy, I'll probably eventually have to replace the nylon ones, these will last my whole life.
Each handle is good for different things, I like the nylon ones for triceps, these ones for chest presses. But I switch them around quite a bit.

I had an older Total Gym for many years that I purchased in 1999. That model came with these chrome handles and I always liked them. My new Total Gym Fit comes with the plastic handles, which I believe is standard now. They are fine, but I remembered the chrome handles as being superior. As soon as I received these new chrome handles and attached them to the TG Fit, I immediately knew I had remembered correctly. These handles immediately provide better control over the cables and they make using the Total Gym more enjoyable!
