We bought this machine a couple years ago and should have taken it back to the store after the first load wasn't clean. It does not get the clothes clean! Do not buy this machine!!!!!!!

Love the washer but in order for it to spin after first cycle I have to move the dial. So I basically have to babysit the washer. Any thoughts??

A Washer that does not pretend to know more than you do

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I had to buy 2 washing machines in 2012. I used the Consumer Reports tests to purchase both. For the first I chose a "Energy Smart" higher-rated model than this GE Unit. Lesson learned: The new Energy Smart "intelligent" features simply take more time of the user to get the job done. For instance, the "Energy Smart" chip decides how much water to use, NOT the user. Sometimes the chip isn't as smart as it thinks and not enough water is allotted by the chip to get the job done. So the user has to "fool" the chip by wetting the laundry first to make it heavier so the smart chip will dispense more water for the "bigger load". What a pain just to get a full tub of water! My wife does NOT like to use the "Energy Smart" washing machine.
My wife does like this GE model. YOU (the user) sets all the controls and the washer does what YOU want it to do, NOT what some techie programmed into a smart chip for the washer to do. And of course since it runs by good old-school clock-work drives and manual switches, there is no "brain" in this unit that will die in a few years and you will find the replacement chip costs more than a new washer! I would have rated performance of this unit excellent, but the agitator cycles are only a choice of slow, and leisurely. I like the old-school agitators and motors that really swished the clothes around when washing them, you know they got clean then! But Consumer Reports did give this unit high marks for cleaning. And my wife LIKES it.
Post script, when logging in to write this review I noticed that this model has been discontinued. All I would say to take away from this review is STA Y AWAY from "Energy Smart" and electronic digital control washers/dryers! Stick to the old school tried and true analog-switches manually-controlled machines. You will not only save money on the cost of the equipment, you will also save time as you will not have to figure out how to trick the smart machine to do what you want it to do, not what it's "brain" decides is best.

Does the job

Read the other reviews , I'm not sure why the difference in reviews. The machine does the job, to me it's super quiet. Yes there are some noises, after all it's an appliance, (nothing earth shattering) but a paper comes with the product to tell you what to expect. My clothes are actually coming out cleaner then my old machine, but then again that's part of the reason I needed a new machine. it was a good value for the money.

Not like they use to make, but works well for us
on February 12, 2012

We recently purchased this after getting rid of our NEW GE front loaders.. no matter what maintenance we did to our FL they reeked of mildew smell and didn't use enough water to clean the clothes.. period.. the service man should have just lived at our home as much as he was sent to repair and fix leaking seals that POURED water on our floors. I didn't want to go with GE again but my fiancee insisted old school may be better. I am pleasantly surprised with these, however nothing is made as it once was. This washer is very quiet and uses more water than I have ever seen on my FL which I like. You just have to watch and not overfill your washer and the water level suits me as long as you watch that. The only complaint I have is the agitator is very slow and I wish it would go faster and really pull under the laundry and scrub it , like the old types use to do. But today they do not make any of those anymore, this is as old school as I could find. Seems to clean the clothes and Nothing could be as bad as our old Front loaders.. so far I am happy!

So far I love this washer

Got this washer after getting rid of our NEW GE front loaders from mildew smell and constant maintenance and not getting our clothes clean from so little water usage. This is still not going to use as much water as the old school top loaders did, but is the closest thing they make to it now a days. That is the only complaint I have is you have to watch how much you load the washer. I am almost putting everything on super load to get the most water into each wash. At first I couldn't see the agitator moving very fast, but we used a magnet to keep the top open so we could wash and watch and after a few secs it started really turning, I am so glad to get rid of our Front loaders and find this product. I think it's a keeper! Clothes are getting clean and finally smell nice.

Do Not Buy This Washer!!!
on February 18, 2012

We purchased this washer to replace an older GE machine that had developed a nasty leak in the water switching solenoids (or whatever they are called). We chose this washer because it appeared to be fairly similar to what we were replacing. WRONG!!!
This machine is "energy compliant", but it is not stated anywhere on it. And, what that means is - there is not (ever) enough water to properly wash clothes, and worse, there is not enough water to properly rinse the clothes. We washed out bath towels, and had to cycle thru the rinse cycle THREE TIMES just to get the soap out.
Terrible product. Now we have to take it back to the seller (which luckily has a satisfaction guarantee policy. This is the third GE washer we have owned. It will be the last.

15 Months with Bad Transmission
on February 22, 2012

I purchased this washer November 2010. Normal home usage for two - three people. First, the noise reduction advertised for this machine does not keep the machine quiet; I've had people tell me the washer was quite noisy, even after making sure the machine was level and installed properly. February 2012, the transmission started slipping, so that the machine will not complete a spin cycle. Three months out of warranty, $200 replacement part, plus labor. I guess I will be buying a new washer.
