How long the batteries will last is not only determined by the type and quality of the battery but also by how often the unit is used. If multiple people are using the unit and/or it gets used multiple times a day, the batteries will need to be replaced more frequently. The unit doesn't have much power. I replace the batteries and it seems to not affect the performance. I have a rechargeable waterpik that has flossed for 2 years doing a great job, the only problem is it has leaked since new.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Although the pressure is not as high as our counter top models, it does not make it any less effective. Your unit does carry a one-year warranty.
