Hello LanceM - If you have not flossed regularly in the past, it may take some time for your gums to get used to it. We recommend that you start on the lowest pressure setting that is most comfortable for you. You can adjust the pressure gradually as your gums become stronger. However, if pain and bleeding are severe or if they persist, we recommend speaking with your dental provider.

I'm afraid that I'm terribly disappointed with this product. 4 years ago I purchased the Waterpik corded flosser (WP-663), and found it exceptional; I use it only at the highest pressure setting. The cordless model specs claim it can perform at 3/4 the max pressure of the WP-663, but I highly doubt that; the water pressure from the WF-02W010 cordless is horribly wimpy by comparison! If I could I return it, I definitely would.
