Nice Update to a Great Camera!

I've loved photography for over 50 years now. We've owned most of the formats (35, Medium, Large) and everything from a Nikor to a Hassleblad to a Speed Graphic.
These days I hate lugging all the gear to get a decent picture. Once we got a G6 I was hooked! Fabulous cameras in a small size. In fact we've owned:
1) G6
2) G7
3) G9
4) G11
5) G12

We take it to concerts for the low light abilities, to nature centers to photograph flowers and just about every where we go. I've learned over the years that the best camera you can get is the one you have with you! The G12 makes it possible to always have a great professional quality camera with you.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, excellent image quality, durable, Lightweight/Portable

Great compact

This is a great compact camera. I call it my mini DSLR as it has virtually all of the features of a good DSLR at about 1/3 the size. I do a lot of hiking and like to take a camera along, but a DSLR is just too bulky. I can easily put the G12 in my waist pack or on the belt and hardly notice it. And the picture quality is great. Can't imagine a DSLR being noticeably better. So a great combo of size, speed, and image quality. And the G12 feels like a little tank also ( a compliment ). Everything I wanted.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: only improvements i could see- longer telephoto, need brighter lcd

People, just look around you: We live in a new world of one-handed cell phone "photographers. Gee, if *that's* all you care about capturing images ... NO camera will work for you.
Hold the G12 steady for mind-boggling pictures! In fact, since this camera has that spectacular "HDR" setting, one MUST hold it rock-steady so it can capture 3 +/-/spot-on images, over-lay them and display. do it and you ... will ... not ... believe ... your ... eyes!

Best non-dSLR images I've ever taken with a digital camera have come from THIS spectacular little jewel!!!!
Impossible to recommend it highly enough!!!!

Great daily carry around

I bought a new Canon G12 a couple of weeks ago.
I've been a camera/photography enthusiast for over 40 years and have/use medium format-film, rangefinder-film , SLR/DSLR's.

I currently use mostly my DSLR bodies and gave about 6 lenses, ranging from fisheye, super wide angle to telephoto.
But the DSLR system (not Canon) although capable of excellent pictures, is heavy and can be cumbersome to carry around on a daily basis.
I wanted a very good compact, with easily accessible manual settings and controls...don't like fully automatic cameras. My main role for the G12 is as a daily carry around camera.
I checked out the ratings and the Canon G12 seemed to be at the top of the list and I had admired the G series from afar, for a number of years.
I bought one (my first Canon, BTW) and so far I'm very pleased with it. I like the indoor, available light (no flash) capability and the fact that it's like a little DSLR..control wise.
However, it reminds me of my film Rangefinder in appearance.
I'm looking forward to many years of regular use with this small camera.
Pros: small size, manual controls, quality pictures for a small camera, rangefinder like appearance, reputation for quality, a small camera for the dslr enthusiast, like the hot shoe and provision for add on flash
Cons: no full owner's manual in print., no provision to add screw on filter

A wise choice

Have just decided to purchase this G12 from canon 2 days before my trip to Europe instead of carrying my Canon 400D with me. And It's a wise decision of me. G12 turned out to be a really good camera in performance. Compact size with good performance is its best point, beside that, if you are me, an semi-amateur, G12 automatic will be the good choice. The "not good" from g12 is when you shot photo in a snowy weather. It cannot focus very well. Beside that, battery display is a problem with g12 too, battery life is good but it's full all the time I used and when it is low, it turn to be nearly low signal and after just turn it off for 10 seconds and turn on again, it's full battery but then 10 minus continuously taking picture, it's out of energy totally. However, in fact, this is only after 1 morning full of hard shooting photo and I changed the battery in the early afternoon. Now, I gave my canon 400D to my dad and I just use this g12. The price is a little bit high. At this price, I would like Canon to add a case with the camera
Pros: good performance, small size esy to carry, easy to use
Cons: confused battery display

Best Camera for the Money

This camera is perfect for most lighted areas except in the snow. The LCD screen isn't capable of producing a clear image in the really bright atmosphere of snow.

G12 Bliss

This is the camera if your in the market for good performance with high image quality 2nd camera to your DSLR. For travel it's a great image taker. that is not too big and not too small.
Having a viewfinder on this camera is a must ,and the reason I bought it. The LCD is still hard to view in bright sun light.
If you buy this camera, buy a good after market user guide to cover all of the features of the G12
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, viewfinder (a must)
Cons: clumsy control dial on back of camera, poor location of tripod mount

viewfinder dissapoints

I bought the camera thinking i could shoot movies through
the viewfinder.i do a lot of panning [hand held] and it's much easier to look through a viewfinder than holding a camera 6-8 inches from your head-the camera does not provide a signal in the viewfinder when it's filming-like

Cons: Complicated controls/menu, shutter button has poor feedback
