genius - one of a kind

I have a pro DSLR and then I have the best smartphone camera in the world. I needed something in between.
I tried pretty much all of the newly released compacts and 3/4. Price was not an issue for me and I'm always looking for something newer and better. I did not expect at all to end up with the G12, which I considered an "old" model. To my surprise it turned out to be the winner. Here is why: - best COLOR BALANCE in all lighting situation - fast AF - sharp, dimensional pictures - good high ISO performance - Image Stabilization gives you those added stops that make hand held shots in low light possible - rugged, care-free - size and weight feels good in the hand - smaller chip size allows for real macro shots, sharp focus for objects as close as 1.5 inches (try that with any of the other models claiming macro) - correctly color calibrated and sharp LCD - battery charge last - awesome manual controls and dedicated dials - did I say, most accurate COLOR BALANCE in all lighting situations - it's FUN to use!
It produced one keeper after another. I'm really impressed and happy with this camera. Awesome.

Love the G12

My husband and I bought the G11 last summer for our vacation, which was recommended to us by a professional photographer. This winter our daughter was going to study in New Zealand and we wanted her to be able to take great pictures. We gave her our G11 and upgraded to the G!12. We were told the only difference from the G11 to the G12 was the HD video. To our surprise there are several other upgrades to this camera and I just love it.
For those who want more than a point and shoot camera but don't want the full SLR, this is the camera for you.
The only con to the camera is the instruction manual. I highly recommend you buy David Busch's Cannon Powershot G12 Digital Photography book. It explains the camera in great detail. I have learned a lot from this book.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: poor instruction manual

design & craftmanship excellence in a compact DSLR

After carring my 40D w/battery pack and 24-70 f2.8 in a sling bag around the Savannah, Ga. historic district all day, I knew I had to down size for travel. I considered the G-12, S95,and SX30 IS, all are great cameras. I settled on the G-12 because it"s more like a DSLR and I didn't need the long zoom of the SX30 or shirt pocket size of the S95. First impressions were the excellent build quality of the camera, buttons, and knobs. The picture quality and detail is outstanding. I have taken shots in the micro mode of butterflys hatching and close-ups of flowers. Peolpe thought they were taken with a DSLR. At a wedding, I was shooting pictures of the church in landscape mode, again great pictures. The G-12 is packed full of features and functions to meet the needs of a novice to a pro.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, excellent construction

Nice Update to a Great Camera!

I've loved photography for over 50 years now. We've owned most of the formats (35, Medium, Large) and everything from a Nikor to a Hassleblad to a Speed Graphic.
These days I hate lugging all the gear to get a decent picture. Once we got a G6 I was hooked! Fabulous cameras in a small size. In fact we've owned: 1) G6 2) G7 3) G9 4) G11 5) G12
We take it to concerts for the low light abilities, to nature centers to photograph flowers and just about every where we go. I've learned over the years that the best camera you can get is the one you have with you! The G12 makes it possible to always have a great professional quality camera with you.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, excellent image quality, durable, Lightweight/Portable

The Power in the PowerShot line.

The PowerShot G12 puts the Power into the powershot line's name! With 30 years of experience as a photographer I've owned 3 35mm film cameras from two different manufacturers. And three digital cameras from Canon the G2 being my first digital and the Rebel XTi my only DSLR. Out of the box my G12 was both familiar and exciting. Clean no nonsense looks, solid feel in the hand, prominent clearly labeled physical controls and shortcut buttons, and hot shoe placed high over a real viewfinder. After about 2000 photos with my G12. From full sky shots capturing meteor showers, landscapes, vacation snapshots, to macro work of flowers and more I've had a high percentage of keepers 90+, to be honest most of the rejects happened in full manual mode. The versatility of control and camera assisted modes make the G12 a brilliant co-creator. When I find a scene I want to capture for myself or share with family and friends I know that my G12 can deliver.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use, controls/menus make sense

Worthy Upgrade
on March 8, 2011

A few years ago I began searching for the best non SLR camera I could find to carry all the time. I wanted to be able to submit shots taken with it to some of the stock agencies I'm listed with. The G10 was it. Now I have the G12 and think it is a great upgrade. There is nothing wrong with the G10, I still use it but I liked the flip out screen feature. . I didn't expect the image quality to change much and decided I was OK with the reduced image size. What I didn't expect is that the image quality is a lot better and the G10 was already satisfactory. The performance of the flash and the logic that controls it is better too. Flash (built-in flash) photos are dramatically better than the G10. . It seems silly but one of the best parts about it is that it uses the same battery and media card as the G10. I've always been very dissatisfied with Canon for changing batteries and accessories between similar SLR's because I now carry 4 different batteries and 4 different charges for my 4 Canon SLR's. It a bit ridiculous just to stimulate added accessory purchases. I don't know about anything prior to the G10 but the fact that all the models since it use the same accessories is both welcomed and smart on Canon's part. Let's hope they adopt that for the SLR's soon. . I don't use much HD video but do like having it available. I don't think it will stand up to the quality of say the 7D but it's a lot better than the G10's video. I don't think I'd use the HD video from the G12 professionally but I haven't tried to yet and I'll keep an open mind on that. It may in fact hold up. The problem will be sound. There is no external mic jack and the built in mic is mono and is fairly sensitive to wind noise. It would be nice to be able to throw a fuzzy mic on the hot shoe and record cleaner sound. . Overall, it's a fantastic camera when you don't want to lug your SLR around. I do carry it with me when I have my SLRs as a secondary camera and sometimes I find myself grabbing it when I have the other ones right there. That says a lot about my confidence in it as a still camera.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: no external mic jack

An incredible surpise for me

I purchased the G12 as a lark in St. Thomas, USVI last November. I still rely on my EOS 5D Mark II with several L lenses, but lugging the weight around is tiring. So I got the G12 and it has been a great experience.
My forte is close-up, wildlife and nature in general. My first experiment with the G12 was learning the nuances of its capabilities in close-up focusing outdoors.
Lesson 1: focus at the telephoto end to give the sensor large details to focus on. My results have been professional level without a doubt.
Lesson 2: Use focus trap, I use the asterisk button, top on right side, before releasing shutter.
Lesson 3: use a light monopod as it comes handy outdoors when breezes interfere and you can't hold on indefinitely.
Lesson 4: set color to "vivid.
My one regret: the pathetic user manual, everything being via a computer. Its not nice for an outdoor guy who wants to reduce gear weight.
No I am not giving up on the 5D and the 100mm macro L lens, although I am looking at the G1 X. What has happened is that I have a fun camera that delivers images that need no apologies, no explanation.;
Pros: no real deficiency; totally competent
Cons: the user manual in hard copy

Excellent Camera, but Where's the Manual?!
on December 20, 2010

I've shot about 200 pics so far, and am delighted with the results (can't comment on battery life yet, but shooting in cold weather drained it quickly). I generally keep the camera in Program mode and the ISO below 400 (given the size of the chip and the laws of physics, noise is unavoidable in low light at higher ISOs), shoot without flash most of the time, and am amazed at the quality of the pictures under low-light conditions.
I do hope that Canon listens to us concerning the manual, however. I applaud their conservation efforts, but agree that it's unconscionable that a camera so complex would not come with a pocket-size manual. Please rectify this -- it's the only blot on an otherwise first-rate product.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, easy to use
Cons: no printed manual, could use a wrist strap as well as the neck strap
