REALLY LIKE THIS (G12) P&S CAMERA. TWO ITEMS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED; 1. LOCATION OF *(AE LOCK) BUTTON. MOVE FROM EXISTING LOCATION TO TOP NEXT TO ON/OFF BUTTON, BECAUSE WHEN I HOLD CAMERA MY THUMB HITS, PUSHES IT! I KNOW THE CAMERA IS SMALL AND FREE SPACE SO NON-EXISTING BUT....... 2. ENCLUDE A REAL OWNERS MANUAL, WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO BUY AN ADDITIONAL BOOK SO I MAY REFER TO OPERATIONS? THE COMPUTER VERSON IS FINE IF I AM IN FRONT OF THE COMPUTER!!! OTHER THAN THOSE TWO NIT-PICKEN ITEMS, "I REALY LOVE THIS LITTLE CAMERA"!!!!!!!! ONE MORE THING, IF CANON COULD SHOW THE CAMERA FUNCTIONS IN THE VIEW FINDER LIKE A DSLR, WHOW WHAT CAMERA IT WOULD BE!!!!!!!

I really like the G12 (had a G11) because it has a separate wheel on the front to which I can assign shutter speed. With the G11 (and my S90), I spent too much time spinning the rear wheel to select aperture and shutter speed.
My only real complaint is the metering mode will NOT stay in spot when you turn the camera off. Come on Canon, this is supposed to be a prosumer model.
Of course what I really need (besides a 5D MkIII ;-), is an EVIL (electronic viewfinder interchangeable lens/mirrorless SLR) about this size with APS-C Sensor or larger. Then I could leave my 7D behind when travelling light or just walkin' around.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: metering mode won't stay on spot

G12, a good go to camera

I own a larger DSLR system, but I also own a G12. It is a good camera for the day to day use, i.e. a camera that I keep in the truck, and use when I see an interesting photo situation. The camera is also small enough where I can stow it in a jacket pocket. Also, I like the low light feature, and I use it a great deal when photographing interior situations, like church functions or what have you.
In short, it is a good all around camera for the day to day carry.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: lacks a small printed user manual.

i love this camera. i have not got to play with it much yet and have only been able to take pictures in my home and at night. the flash is amazing and my pictures come out clear and vibrant =). i def recommend it to any one wanting a digital camera without having to change out the lense

A Real Compact Camera

G11 comments applicable to the G11/G12. The G11 is an excellent compact camera with a rugged frame. It generally gets good automatic settings and surprisingly focuses on objects near the lens, less than 1/2 inch. I suggest seeking out the aftermarket books for techniques and hidden features. The battery compartment has a cool safety latch to prevent inadvertent removal. The neck strap is an issue - best described as not user friendly; awkward feel, tangles, packs poorly in my camera case.
A major firmware improvement would include the ability to use the G11 upside down for left handed use. Just flip the screen text information and image to read upright automatically as sensed by position or a menu choice . This would be extremely useful for pictures of plant machinery when accessible with only the left arm (or for the handicapped). A minor improvement would be to allow in Auto Mode the choice to use MF, manual focus.

Outdoor Excellence

I looked into the G-Series after reading a review in Rock & Ice magazine of cameras that the pros use for for magazine quality shots. I had lots of experience with 35mm film cameras in a climbing situation and was always in a dilema as to which lense to carry. Changing a lense while 2000 feet off the deck was not usually an option and the weight alone was always a factor as well as damage control. SInce those days I have used every generation of digital camera that has come out but all of them suffered from some kind of shortcoming be it poor battery life, poor image quality and few if any user adjustable features such as F-stop, exposure and low light capability. The SLR digitals are nice but they too have the same issues that I faced with my film 35 - big, heavy, and still require multiple lenses to get from wide angle to telephoto. I am now using my G12 exclusively and carry it all of the time while skiing and climbing. Looking back, it has taken me over 35 years to find the perfect camera for my needs and I've found it now in the G12. I shoot in some pretty extreme places under conditions that many will never experience and I am 100 percent pleased with this camera. I did not buy this camera for video (I carry a video cam when I need it) and have not even used that function so I have no opinion in that regard. This camera will be strapped around my neck on every adventure I go and will be the only still camera I carry from now on.

Camera flash

Camera flash is not powerful enough for interior photos of homes. Using in basement is a no no.
Pros: easy to use
Cons: Poor Low-Light Performance
