Great Camera

Awesome camera!! Takes very good low light shots. It takes great motion pictures. I did a lot of research and since my wife did not want an SLR this was perfect.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Love the G12

My husband and I bought the G11 last summer for our vacation, which was recommended to us by a professional photographer. This winter our daughter was going to study in New Zealand and we wanted her to be able to take great pictures. We gave her our G11 and upgraded to the G!12. We were told the only difference from the G11 to the G12 was the HD video. To our surprise there are several other upgrades to this camera and I just love it.
For those who want more than a point and shoot camera but don't want the full SLR, this is the camera for you.
The only con to the camera is the instruction manual. I highly recommend you buy David Busch's Cannon Powershot G12 Digital Photography book. It explains the camera in great detail. I have learned a lot from this book.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: poor instruction manual

Mediocre at best

Owners manual leave much to be desired - lacks the detail to be informative/instructional
Flash, when in the auto mode functions 100% of the time regardless of lighting conditions or ISO setting
LCD is excellent and provides more than adequate information for the photographer - Viewfinder provides no information including focus, aperture or speed data - for this information you must use the LCD
Over priced for what you get - Canon produces better backup/supplemental/pocket cameras at a much cheaper price.

Another Winner!

I bought my G12 for its features - primarily an adjustable LCD screen and an optical viewfinder in a small size - which were indispensable on my earlier A630. Image stabilization, 10 megapixels and a high quality LCD screen are bonuses on an already fantastic camera. I'm sure I'll never use all of its features but it's exactly what I need for portability and ease of use. I have had it two months and am completely satisfied.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use, optical viewfinder, adjustable lcd screen

Worthy Upgrade

A few years ago I began searching for the best non SLR camera I could find to carry all the time. I wanted to be able to submit shots taken with it to some of the stock agencies I'm listed with. The G10 was it. Now I have the G12 and think it is a great upgrade. There is nothing wrong with the G10, I still use it but I liked the flip out screen feature.

I didn't expect the image quality to change much and decided I was OK with the reduced image size. What I didn't expect is that the image quality is a lot better and the G10 was already satisfactory. The performance of the flash and the logic that controls it is better too. Flash (built-in flash) photos are dramatically better than the G10.

It seems silly but one of the best parts about it is that it uses the same battery and media card as the G10. I've always been very dissatisfied with Canon for changing batteries and accessories between similar SLR's because I now carry 4 different batteries and 4 different charges for my 4 Canon SLR's. It a bit ridiculous just to stimulate added accessory purchases. I don't know about anything prior to the G10 but the fact that all the models since it use the same accessories is both welcomed and smart on Canon's part. Let's hope they adopt that for the SLR's soon.

I don't use much HD video but do like having it available. I don't think it will stand up to the quality of say the 7D but it's a lot better than the G10's video. I don't think I'd use the HD video from the G12 professionally but I haven't tried to yet and I'll keep an open mind on that. It may in fact hold up. The problem will be sound. There is no external mic jack and the built in mic is mono and is fairly sensitive to wind noise. It would be nice to be able to throw a fuzzy mic on the hot shoe and record cleaner sound.

Overall, it's a fantastic camera when you don't want to lug your SLR around. I do carry it with me when I have my SLRs as a secondary camera and sometimes I find myself grabbing it when I have the other ones right there. That says a lot about my confidence in it as a still camera.

I got my new Canon G12 last week and took it to it's first concerts this weekend! I love it! My online friends think that the pictures I took with it are great! Why did I wait so long to buy a Canon?

Lacks sound memo, download bug

I'd love to recommend this camera as it improves a lot on my workhorse G10. However, beginning with the G11 Canon deleted the sound memo feature. I recently returned from Egypt/Israel (pre-upheaval by 1 week) and came back with 2000 photos. The sound memo is the best way to recall what each photo meant as well as historical details, etc. I transfer those memos to the descriptions when I use iPhoto.
Not specific just to the G series, but the canon software cannot download large number of photos to Mac OSX 10.6.x. It hangs up and you must manually copy over the files.

Finally bought what I really wanted

This camera is slightly bulkier than most of the compact point and shoots but turns out exquisite results under a wide range of circumstances. Build quality is especially impressive. I am more interested in something I can really grip than something I can stick in my shirt pocket.
