I purchased this to replace an A95. I love it. It gets used more than all of my others. It is small an light, will fit into a large pocket, but still heavy enough to not 'bounce' when your holding it. I like the LCD screen that rotates for shots that are hard to access the back of the camera. The RAW capture is also a plus. All of the buttons are accessible, although my larger fingers tend to bump the wrong buttons at times. Battery life is very good. Overall, a very nice unit. If I have a complaint, it will be that there is still a 'lag' for the shutter. All else works very well. I'm very happy with this camera.
Pros: light and small enough, shoots raw, controls accessable, lcd screen rotates
Cons: buttons small and close for larger hands

I looked into the G-Series after reading a review in Rock & Ice magazine of cameras that the pros use for for magazine quality shots. I had lots of experience with 35mm film cameras in a climbing situation and was always in a dilema as to which lense to carry. Changing a lense while 2000 feet off the deck was not usually an option and the weight alone was always a factor as well as damage control. SInce those days I have used every generation of digital camera that has come out but all of them suffered from some kind of shortcoming be it poor battery life, poor image quality and few if any user adjustable features such as F-stop, exposure and low light capability. The SLR digitals are nice but they too have the same issues that I faced with my film 35 - big, heavy, and still require multiple lenses to get from wide angle to telephoto. I am now using my G12 exclusively and carry it all of the time while skiing and climbing. Looking back, it has taken me over 35 years to find the perfect camera for my needs and I've found it now in the G12. I shoot in some pretty extreme places under conditions that many will never experience and I am 100 percent pleased with this camera. I did not buy this camera for video (I carry a video cam when I need it) and have not even used that function so I have no opinion in that regard. This camera will be strapped around my neck on every adventure I go and will be the only still camera I carry from now on.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Very useful compact camera

I have used SLR cameras since 1959 and continue to use them particularly for landscape and nature photos. The last two decades I have also owned “pocket” cameras for situations where they would serve the purpose and I did not want to carry the bulk and weight of an SLR and lenses. Now there are some countries where I do not want to flash an SLR for concerns of robbery. I had three criteria for a new compact camera: Raw photos for better adjusting, an optical viewfinder for when the LCD gets bad lighting, and the flip LCD screen for shooting over people or down low nature shots. I read the reviews and was impressed, and also realized this was not quite a pocket camera although it will fit in a coat pocket. I am very impressed with the G12 and am using it more than I anticipated. I can print a display quality 13” x 19” print almost as good as from my DSLR. I can shoot at high ISO in RAW, remove the noise in Adobe Lightroom, and adjust for the wide angle distortion in Lightroom. I have been using the G12 for people, groups and meetings with available light rather than flash because up to ISO 1600 I get quite sharp photos and flash does not have much reach anyway. The flip LCD is great at gatherings to shoot with the camera high over my head to miss all the other heads. My DSLRs cannot do that. By ISO 3200 the photos are going quite soft but are sill usable and better than no photo. I shoot in RAW, although sometimes I shoot RAW + JPG just to see the comparison. There is a flaw in the software in the G12 because I get a one pixel wide white line across the photo when shooting at ISO 800 or higher. That thin line does not seem like it would be significant, but when I crop a photo because the G12 does not have much telephoto reach it can become a problem. The line is only visible in a crop or a 1:1 view on the screen. An important photo from a conference had the line down the prime person, and retouching the line was a bother. I would have given the G12 a rating of all 5 except for this problem. I think this G12 is a flexible and superb camera.
Pros: optical viewfinder, raw photos, flip lcd, controls are complete and handy, excellent photos
Cons: no printed manual, limited digital manual, line thru photo at iso 800 and up

Excellent camera, can be better!

i think this is without a doubt an excellent camera. i was fortunate to be one of the first people to own the G12. this camera is all about convenience over perfection. i practically carry it EVERYWHERE i go. i'm very glad the decreased the mega pixel from the previous version G11, as it's now more sensitive to light, and performs better quality images due to the sensor size combination with MP.
However, i am not very happy with the video mode, as you find yourself limited on not being able to manually control the iris nor focus or zoom out while recording video.. YES, if you zoom in while filming you can NOT zoom back out. Though, the good thing that now video is HD: 720x1280 and shoots in true 24p.
I would have loved to have 24mm lens rather than 28mm, i would have loved to be able to shoot @ F/ 2.0 rather than F/2.8 and I would love to see the Canon G13 incorporate a slow motion up to 60 fps video recording.
in all fairness, the high lever iso sensitivity is good, and compared to other cameras in its line, this one might be the best in cleanness of noise.
Great camera overall.
Pros: high quality images, easy to use functionality for still mode, multiple aspect ratios, 16:9 video format.
Cons: no manual espouse in video mode, not very fast lens f/2.8

No Printed Manual?!?!?!?!?

The camera is terrific - a great followup to my G7-EXCEPT: (Note the G7 furnished a manual) It is unnacceptable that the G12 is delivered without a pocketsize bound printed Users' Manual, which can be carried and read at leisure anywhere, or used in the field when away from a PC/MAC or laptop + furnished disk. Offering to print and mail the pages is a poor recovery to a really bad business decision - as is obligating the customer to print his own. The CD .pdf manual is a good idea, but BOTH should be delivered with a camera of this complexity and quality. I hope Canon choses to print such a manual, in the size and format of the G7's, and mails one to each registered G12 owner - as well as include one in all future new-in-box product packages. No Manual = Bad Move!!!
Cons: no printed manual!!!

Half a century a photographer but cant say anything that has not already been said here. The overriding objection however is lack of a printed manual. Like the nice old canon ones that fit that little pocket in my case like the G11 had.. Big mistake, Canon... big.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: no printed manual

Pros: Actual control dials, the reappearance of the front dial sold me. Image quality from the small sensor is excellent. The optical viewfinder is a plus, while coverage is on the small side, it helps in bright sunlight. When used in place of the LCD, your shooting time is extended greatly. The lens is optically good, it requires little to no lens distortion correction in post processing. IS works well.
Cons: No printed manual on such a high end unit, what were you thinking? Lens speed is ok but could be faster : After comparing the G12 and the S95 cameras, I purchased the G12. : I wanted a quality compact camera for the times I did not want or need to carry a DSLR around with me but still wanted good image quality and control flexibility with out fiddling around with a bunch of menus. : The Canon G12 fits my needs well. The images are excellent and I have all the control over shooting I could want. The controls and menus make sense, unlike the 1D I had, it was easy to pick up and get good images right out of the box. : I am not a fan of Canon's DSLRs, I have had a few and they annoyed me, but I think Canon makes the best compact cameras on the market. For me it was easy to choose the G12, it is a great camera.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: no printed manual

Great for the Traveling Semi-Professional

The manual dials for picture settings are great. Much easier than going through a screen menu.
The picture quality is great if you know the right settings to use. Takes great pictures without flash, even in low light.
The screen and pictures are crisp and clear videos turn out well.
The camera is much more compact than a SLR so it makes a good traveling camera for those un-expected picture moments.
The only thing I don't like is the colors are muted and drab. The only way I can get vivid colors in my photos is by using the "vivid" option.
Pros: compact, manual dials, crisp pictures and display, great low light photos
Cons: muted photo colors
